I remember when I was a child, my dad would watch the American painter Bob Ross on the television here in the UK. My old man is in his own right a very good artist and would amaze me with his portraits and sketches of my brother and I. These tutorials are as captivating as the likes of Bob Ross. You are the female Bob Ross in my opinion; Easy to watch, relaxing, educational and for a short time an opportunity to get lost in a world of magic and wonderment! You are a fabulous artist and a great inspiration as to 'what I may be capable of' with enough practise. Many thanks from here in the UK, Chris.

I am very glad that you are addressing the Fabriano paper issue. I just wanted to comment that the Fabriano Artistico HP 140 lb in blocks 12" X 18" is very different from the Fabriano Artistico HP 140 lb extra white that is sold in sheets. The one in the blocks absorbs the pigments of the polychromes, drying out the drawing. It is almost impossible to maintain bright colors as one has to go back an re-touch... just to see the pigments be absorbed again and again. Also, it does not produce the desired effect with OMS. That is, it does not move the pigment as well. Anyhow, I just thought I would point this out because it might help others. I enjoy your work very much.

This is one of my favorite videos that you've done....perhaps because I'd just purchased some Fabriano paper to work on and was also working on birds (Chickadees), so it couldn't have come at a better time. You make it all look so easy, Lisa, but I've got a looong way to go before I master the pencils! But sincerely, thank you for such an informative video.

Great video Lisa! 😁 I'm glad you really like the paper for colored pencils. I wonder how it would burn. 🤔 From what I understand the pigment is sitting more on top of the paper because there is more "sizing" on it. I wonder if that has anything to do with them using the mill to make things other than watercolor paper. That would explain why some watercolorists aren't liking it as much. This makes it harder for glazing... the under layer of wc lifts more.

As the Brush and Pencil Touch Up Texture mixed with Titanium White has to be mixed in such small quantities because it dries up so quickly, it’s a pity it can’t be produced in marker pen type form with a brush nib. Perhaps this is impossible because of the very fact it dries quickly! Maybe you could ask Alyona? Great tutorial, glad you liked the paper, loved Chicken!

In an older one of your videos (I believe it was the one about varnishes but I'm not sure) you mentioned that after you varnish your paintings/drawings you can no longer tell which was done with what medium besides just memory. But colored pencils take so much longer than say, acrylic. I know in the past you've said that you enjoy using multiple mediums so as to not get bored, but is there ever a time where you would want to use colored pencils but decide against it for time? Just curious because of your comment about taking "shortcuts" to achieve the same end result.
@Lachri6 жыл бұрын
If I want something really large, I'm most likely going to choose a different medium. Not that you can't complete large work's with colored pencil, just that I don't have interest in spending that much time on one piece. I get bored too easily to spend months on one project :)

I personally won't purchase pencils that I can not get open stock in the US. They actually aren't even legal to sell here because they've not done toxicity tests (which is why we can't buy them open stock here). What are we going to do when one runs out? Go buy another full set? That is not acceptable to me. The next issue I have is that the Holbein's do not have actual lightfast ratings that I can find. All they say is "Excellent light resistance". That means very pretty much nothing. If these were available open stock like most colored pencils I would suggest trying a few (assuming you were able to find any lightfast ratings at all), but that isn't really possible with those pencils. This brand has three strikes against it to me 1) Not available open stock. 2) No real lightfast ratings. 3) Grossly overpriced considering points 1 and 2.?

Hey Lisa, I first heard about the issues with paper several months ago so I assumed my most recent purchases were the newer type, but I didn't notice any difference between that and the paper I bought previously. Is it more likely that my older purchase from over a year ago is the newer type or my newest purchase from about three months ago is the still the older version? Is there a good way to tell without having used both? I don't have any masking fluid to see what that does to the paper. Also I was wondering if you tried other HP papers like Moulin du Roy and Arches.
@Lachri6 жыл бұрын
No, without testing them side by side I can't tell the difference. Not just by looking anyway.

I'm glad you're enjoying the new version of this paper, Lisa, but I feel bad for watercolor artists who used it, since you said it doesn't handle water very well, or masking fluid, which is something a lot of watercolor artists use. Most watercolor artists seem to prefer cold press to hot press, but still, I think for a company that claims to be making a watercolor paper to make a paper that can barely handle water, and that you can't use masking fluid on, is a major failure on their part.
@Joe_Maysky6 жыл бұрын
Sara Makes Art I have to agree, I’m a watercolorist and I’m not planning on investing in this anytime soon, and being I already have other papers I use for colored pencil it doesn’t make sense for me to get this for colored pencil.

a lot of artists use white posca pens or other pens to make highlights, It may not be as problematic as you say.
@Lachri5 жыл бұрын
A lot of artists using something doesn't make them archival, unfortunately. It's a matter of science and not putting water-based products on top of oil/wax-based. A lot of artists use non-lightfast materials too, but they are still not lightfast and therefor not archival. :(
@blendermind5 жыл бұрын
@@Lachri It is necessary to do a lightfast test to know if it peels or discolors, I do not find anything on the internet about putting pens on top of the pencil, one day maybe I will do that test, because I think that with white titanium (brush and pencil) the lines may not be enough Fine or easy for me, thank you for your reply, I love your work and your tutorials.

I used the touch-up texture on its own and mixed in with titanium white on the Fabriano hot press watercolour paper using Faber Castell Polychromos. My experience is not at all what you describe. If I go on top of the touch-up texture (whether pure or mixed with titanium white) with my Polychromos it comes right off. I cannot draw on top of the touch-up texture. If I go super lightly, it creates a weird, super grainy, uneven texture, almost like what salt does to watercolours. Achieving detail on top of touch-up texture is impossible. If I press slightly harder than super light, the touch-up texture scrapes right off. So does the titanium white. The only thing I could do was use the titanium white mixture as a very last highlight, but only in absolutely tiny amounts. Adding more colour on top of it was impossible. I do not understand how you use it and seem to love it. I consider my purchase of touch-up texture and titanium white a waste of good money.

Sorry you're having trouble. It's one of my favorite colored pencil supplies 🤷♀️ Without seeing what you're doing I can't pinpoint what you're doing differently than me. Maybe post a photo and description in one of our art groups on fb or mewe. When a product works great for others you know it's an issue of technique in its use. Now you just have to figure out exactly what that difference is.
