Vicky, Lightfast is a term used to determine how long a color will last before it starts to fade when exposed to light :)

Vicky Chatz Lightfast means it will not change color due to light exposure. The higher the lightfast rating the longer the color will stay unchanged. Its how archival theu are

I don't know when this video came out, but Derwent recently came out with a line of lightfast colors, currently at 36. The company plans on expanding the line to 72 throughout 2019. See Art Gear Guide with Harry.

Yeah the color swatches never help me on reviews. Even for making a review I feel like I can't give my full opinion if I don't actually try the product on a project. That's how you find out how well they layer/detail/blend etc :D

Lachri Fine Art that is so right! Also I've found that the best way of finding new art supplies is by finding the artist you admire and whose artworks you wish your own would look like and check what supplies they use. That way you know the problem is not in your supplies if you don't get the results you are looking for, but you only need to practice more. ☺ your channel has been a goldmine to me that way 😄

I was so disheartened when I saw the lightfast chart, but this review has me wanting to buy them ASAP! I am thinking about buying them open stock, so I avoid purchasing the pencils with low ratings. I know I can trust any reviews from your channel as your opinions are always backed up with video. I loved the artwork, so excited to see more work with these pencils.

I was really disappointed too. Even more so because I didn't get the ratings until after I had already fallen totally in love with the pencils. I was just showing my husband the ones that are lightfast and there really are some beautiful colors I'm happy to add to my regular "usable" set of polychromos and luminance now, so I'm trying to look at the positive lol.

This turned out beautiful! Would you consider doing a tutorial where you use both the coloured pencils and intense? That would be great to see! Also, as far as the lightfastness goes, if you frame your work under UV glass can you still sell the originals?
@Lachri7 жыл бұрын
I will add that idea to my to do list for sure!! For the lightfast issue UV sprays and UV protecting glass do make a giant difference. I know a lot of great artists who use fugitive prismacolor colors in their work and just frame them behind UV glass. I'm personally not comfortable with that for anything I sell. I can't say which of us is right or wrong, we just have to do what we're most comfortable with :)

I needed this review so much, thank you! I don't have a lot of money and couldn't deside wich pencils to buy, so I think I'm going to buy these ones. The poly's and luminance are my dream, but I can not afford these. 😔 I hope you can answer this question.. How long does it take a drawing to fade when they are not the best lightfast like the luminance? When they are hanging in a living room for example.. And I found on the websites that the best lightfast only counts in museum light/conditions... So how long it takes to fade in normal light etc etc. I watched a lot of video's aboit this topic, but it's sooo confusing. My mom bought me a big present I did not know of, Prismacolors. I am sooo happy, but also scared because of the softness lol. . Do you know if the Prisma's and Proclours are good to combine? And if these to are good for drawing animals (hair)? Sorry long message and more than one question. 😊😊 Maybe other people whom read this can advice me also. Thank you so much😊😀

My question is, I'm trying to build a collection of work but I'm unsure of how to go about it. Do you start many different pieces at once and work on them as the paint dries or start one and finish one at a time? I currently have 3 pieces started now; I try to start a new one to wait for the paint to dry (oil paint). Just not sure what to do to build a huge body of work...any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

I normally recommend one at a time so that you actually finish everything. When having a lot of projects going at once it's too easy not to get anything finished because you lose interest :)

I'm not an artist, and just started visiting my childhood hobby of drawing again. I'm interested in the procolor pencils. What is the difference between lightfast and non-lightfast pencils for an artist? Do they have the same results. I know Derwent has sets of lightfast color pencils now. Thank you. Look forward to watch and learn from your other videos 😊.
@alizafar26243 жыл бұрын
Lightfast means a colour being able to withstand fading from Ultraviolet light. UV is dangerous in long term as it causes skin cancer, and fading colours. Non lightfast colours even in artists grade are probably made from dyes or pigments that have a poor lightfast rating. Bright colours such as pinks, purples, reds tend not to be lightfast, whereas earth tones and neutrals tend to be the most lightfast. Performance wise of these pencils are the same for all the colours, they feel like the Derwent artists pencils but lay down much better pigment. Artists still do love fugitive colours, as there is no replacement for specific colours such as opera rose and alizarin crimson. Coloured pencil is not the most lightfast medium for artists as there isn't many brands that make lightfast coloured pencils aside from Derwent lightfast and Caran dache luminance. Acrylic and oil paint tend to be the most lightfast (not sure about pastels).

@Lachri7 жыл бұрын
You can use sprays, I'm not sure how they will react to these pencils, I know a lot of UV sprays behave badly with polychromos for example. Better yet would be framing it behind UV protecting glass. While I personally wouldn't be comfortable selling the work with non lightfast colors, framing it behind uv glass and giving it to friends and family shouldn't be a problem for you :D

Hey lisa, about the colored pencil painting kit, do you use the textured fixative on your normal paint thinner color pencil projects? I just tried out the textured fixative on my project, and while it really does work, theres a problem- it leaves a shine layer that is really noticeable if you don't put additional color pencil on top. My artwork turned out fine, but dear god the shine unevenness...do you experience it with powder blender?
@Lachri7 жыл бұрын
I've only used the texture fixative spray on projects where I was working on sanded paper with powder blender. Sometimes it spits droplets out that are shiny but I just cover them with colored pencil and everything looks even. It may be a difference of how much we're using. On projects where I'm working on watercolor HP paper like this I've used touch up texture (the one in the nail polish like bottle). That one adds a bit of gloss but anywhere I use it I always go over that area with colored pencil completely so there doesn't end up being shine issues for me there.

LOL I never got to it. With my schedule being all weird right now I should work on getting that together this week! I just need to do some color swatches and stick them in a window behind the UV glass. I have everything I need, I've just not done it yet :P

Did that bird just sing GOT theme? Too cool, the critique of Derwent was cool too!

I have the Prismacolors and some Polychromos... I love the Prismacolors so much, but I hate to constantly sharpen them. The Polychromos keep their point, but I don’t like how they blend and the colors are not as vibrant. Blend the Procolours like the Prismas or more like the Polys? I am struggling with the decision what I want to buy...

What happens to the piece if you use non lightfast pencils? or if you use a non lightfast color as an 'underpaintng' or base color and then put a lightfast color on top? kinda like you did with the black spots? what will happen to that with time??
@Lachri7 жыл бұрын
The non lightfast colors fade. Something can start bright magenta for example and in time fade to almost no color at all. In this case, with using the non lightfast purples under the black, as those faded the black would start to appear very dull, as would the rest of the leopard's coat where I have purples and magenta's blended in.

I was sure you said most of the inktense were lightfast....which is why I bought them, omg :/// can you please do a video that summarizes your favorite lightfast products on all mediums? And also where do you find that info per each color?
@Lachri6 жыл бұрын
You can find the lightfast info on the manufacturers website. With Inktense we don't know how those ratings are impacted once water is added.

I have made a colourchart of the 72 pencils now, and no, I am not convinced of these pencils. Generally I like firm pencil leads, but the procolour are so much harder than the Polychromos! They feel like the Artists. Maybe a little bit softer in some colours. Especially pale colours are scratchy. I need some pressure, that makes my hands tired. Another issue for me is the lightfastness. Derwent claim „professional quality“, but only 70% can be used for commissions. That’s not much. And these are the common colours, like browns and so on that are lightfast in almost every set. Luminance, Lightfast, Polychromos and Drawing stay my favourites
