Just some advice to anyone watching since Mike doesn't say it explicitly, although it is implied that is what he did. When you get a card error, don't try to continue to use the card to take pictures or video. Put it aside and shoot on another card, until you get to use the recovery software.

Another excellent travelogue video. Almost a disastrous trip, but thankfully you look as if you recovered and achieved some fabulous images. Thankfully the card failure was recoverable, we forget sometimes and rely on these things religiously, so I must check to see if you’ve put a link in your description page for your recovery software, it’s always best to have something sorted prior to just in case.

A while back I accidentally deleted some footage from a Lumix camera using the camera's own delete button. Easeus wasn't able to recover it. Seems using Panasonic's own deletion routine in camera makes it harder to recover a file compared to eg a file deleted from an SD card via your computer.

I am struggling to understand your problem with smuts in your GH6 because with my long experience with both brands, that does not happen. I have never had a problem with dust on the sensor of a Lumix (or Olympus) except when I ran the GH4 on a Newtonian telescope "in prime" i.e. with the sensor open to the elements, and sticky black smuts got in. That was a royal pain. I now use a STC Nightscape clip in filter for astro which also protects the open sensor. Like Olympus they have an ultrasound sensor vibrator which is supposed to work automatically on start up and hence whenever you change lenses. I am perplexed. I have a mixed bag of Ollie and Pana cameras, so I am thinking where has this smut come from? Is it sticky pollen, do you change lenses in the field? Does your video lens on the GH6 have dust in it? I know my G9 can rock 180fps in FHD (slo-mo) but not with auto-focus or audio. I have not tried that birding but do know it will AFC (C-AF) nicely at 60fps but the trick for clarity for subject movement is not faster frame rate but faster shutter. The default shutter will be 180° i.e. twice the frame rate 60fps gives 1/120s but there is no reason not to go faster, apart from the ISO, you can take it up to your stills shutter speeds with enough light. Whilst Olympus external sound recorders are very good (probably the best), Panasonic probably have the best in-camera sound recording (ask Technics) and specialist microphones. Olympus have never been very good at shooting long video, the sensor heats up and the image tinges magenta (this is noted in very small print in the manuals). After 10 minutes or so the colours go funny. Lumix use a heat sink, the GH design the entire camera frame as a radiator

Great video Mike. (as always) I had a card fail in exactly the same way about a year ago. Same message. Card error !. On both computer and camera. As there was nothing special on the card, I was not really worried about trying to recover the images. I threw the card away, which was annoying, because it was an expensive fast card I used for Procap . After you had recovered the images from the card, did you format the card and use it again ,or did you chuck it away ? If it happened once, I would never feel confident using that card again.
@MikeLaneFRPS Жыл бұрын
I formatted it on the computer with the quick format option off. Took 20 minutes. Still using it but cautiously. Take a few then put another card in
@rogerhance5883 Жыл бұрын
@@MikeLaneFRPS I did not know you could format a card on the computer. I thought you had to do it on the camera ? Is the Easeus software a free one or paid for ? I have never used it.

Glad all the travel glitches were overcome, but they are the sort of thing that shouldn’t happen., you ended up with some great footage and images. Big scare regarding the card. Don’t you have a second card backing up in the camera? I have never thought it necessary myself but I might reconsider that now! I have never heard a Greenfinch sing before. It is a lovely song. 😊

Ugh! Flight cancellations/delays etc seem to be more common these days. My very first digital camera had a habit of destroying memory cards. I didn't fix it, I just stopped using it and it sat in a drawer for about ten years until we moved house and then I threw it in the bin. Since then (touch wood) I've had no problems other than operator error.

Do you use two cards for backup? I do, but still hesitate wether to use one card for RAWs and second for jpegs to save space or both for RAWs, as they seem to be more valuable and beacause shooting jpegs seems to slow down buffer clearing. BTW is the card that faild on you the same one that has lower write speed when clearing the buffer?
