Beyond Borders

Күн бұрын

A snapshot of one of the world’s most rapidly ageing and shrinking populations. By 2050 the overall population of Sardinia is expected to halve due to ageing, emigration and falling birth rates. We speak to different generations, from the young thinking of leaving the island due to narrow economic prospects, to centenarians in a society which is trying to attract more incomers with cheap housing schemes.

Here in the UK we need more doctors, nurses, care workers, plumbers, electricians, builders, mechanics, lorry drivers - and a better political system, better prisons, better parents, a few million more houses, less schools, less immigrants . . . Speaking as one myself, it had never occurred to me that we also need more artists, writers and musicians.

Spain has many towns disappearing for reasons similar to what's happened in Sardinia and Italy. Last year I traced my father's line back almost 300 years. An ancestor from the province of Cantabria (Northern Spain) left for Mexico in the 2nd half of the 18th century - I still carry his surname. I'm likely going to retire in Spain after having grown up and lived in the United States all my life. Hoping to retire early - in about 3 years.

Betel Your story makes me think of my friend Natalia. Her mom is from Spain. Natalia had olive skin and was very pretty. It’s funny though cause she’s considered white but if her mom had lived in Mexico then she’d be considered Latino and a minority instead of white. It’s not a big deal but my one friend at college highlighted it for me. He said if we both apply to medical school he’ll always have a better chance than me cause his family lived in Mexico so he’s a minority. I said that’s interesting that it’s not to based on merit, but based on a fake race. It’s like Latino should be broken up into white, African American and Native American when students are applying to school or for the census.

Italy welcomes any good people around the World. Unfortunately the situation is not so "pink" as many foreigners see, but it also depends from the situation they come from. You probably don't know that the whole Italian Heath Care system is going down the drain and lots of Italians are forced to take private insurance just to cover basic sanitary needs. So where did you get the knowledge that Italy has the #2 best health care system in the world..?!? I can tell you from my own & partner's experience (& other Italian family members) that it is not that good. Cheap, yes maybe. But extremely long waits, long distances to cover for a simple examination, bureaucratic, archaic systems & -procedures, inaccessible at times. If you want better or faster care: one can go private, but then you have pay! (me: Northern European living in Italy for a while now).

We went to the emergency room at a hospital and waited about 45 minutes to an hour to be seen initially. Especially came downstairs and then brought my wife upstairs and took Tests. Bloodwork was sent to a lab and we were asked to return later that day. We returned in the mid afternoon and she was handed a prescription and we were not charged! To many people in many western countries have been sold on the idea that they must go to university to get a good job and have a good life and raise a family. This is a fallacy that has made universities prosperous, but the graduates do not prosper in many cases because there are not near enough good paying jobs for all of them. The corrupt government of Italy needs to invest heavily in Sardinia and southern Italy to bring industry to these places so the young people can have a future there.

I seriously think Sardinia and its people will survive just like they did with the EU putting quotes on how much they can produce and sell. It's a pity there can't be coordination between the local, regional, and national authorities to develop industries (like a cork processing plant, as mentioned in the video) with local and immigrant labor. If newly arrived families were entered into programs to link with local families, learn the local Sardinian languages as well as Italian, and otherwise root themselves in the local community and its traditions it really could be amazing what old and new could build together. Instead, one euro houses are put on market and everyone hopes for some elderly white person somewhere to come buy it and use it once or twice a year as a holiday house...

Sardinia will survive because the beaches are the main draw card. eventually what will happen is sardinia will see a HUGE influx of foreigners want to live here by the coast, like we see in the canary islands, ibiza, and the spanish islands. greek islands sardinia is next... and then we will wish they didnt come LOL

I would love to go there. From Australia going anywhere is tricky. I went to Italy in 2009/2010 and could only stay for 3 months in a 6 month period. There are so many restrictions to stay in these places if you are not from Europe or America. I met an artist from Sardinia at the biennale of chianciano in 2009. He said, "Come and visit him and his family in Sardinia." An artist called Sergio Muntoni I met at the biennale. I wished I had gone to Sardinia it looks beautiful like his traditional paintings 🖼.

Humans invented agriculture 10000 years ago. That’s where your mind is. We’ve invented some other stuff since then and that’s why people are leaving places like Sardinia. Meeting people who don’t look like them, who have different points of view, business opportunities, a chance to make something out of life. Digging dirt may be your dream life, but don’t speak for the rest of us.

Well, this is how society is structured. The people who produce essential resources and provides essential work, makes the least, when they should be making the most as they do most of the work. People who sit on their butts, making decisions, are the ones who makes the most and does the least, as they already have great wealth that increases their wealth. At least this sheep farmer is able to buy large areas of land, which will only increase in value, unless of course, there are no people left on that island. And at least they have lots of food everyday, even though it's mostly cheese, bread and meat. That stuff costs a fortune these days. This last year has had the highest increase in grocery prices, or most likely, all time.

Don't they have milking machines? Few would accept the tyranny of daily milking nowadays. A young man will not attract a mate if they can never leave the farm. The sheep don't take Christmas or New Year's off.

Sardinian sheep are selected to produce lots of milk (they produce lots of it), but their wool is itchy as fuck and it was used for external carpets only or heavy coats for winter; today is treated as a byproduct and processed into housing insulant for walls. Some companies collect it and mix it with resins to produce insulating panels similar to mineral wool
@antoniousai1989
@antoniousai1989 7 күн бұрын
@@climate-civilizations It's not that, the wool is simply trash. It's extremely itchy. But they produce twice the milk of a normal sheep eating only wild grasses and flowers.
