In the return north migrations in spring, I've seen immature goshawks who's feathers are really beat up, especially the center section of the tails. Sometimes even primary wing feathers have taken a beating. I assume that hunger forces the immature birds to take more chances and act more aggressively when trying to catch prey. The more feathers broken, the harder it is to make accurate flights on prey.
