@@3212009a Not really, its mainly a matter of what people are familiar with due to cultural/societal norms of where one is raised. Obviously if someone is raised to drink this drink and not milk, then they probably wouldn't think the drink weird, but that milk is weird. Nothing wrong with that.

There are strikt regulations of harvesting birds nests and it takes about 40 days for a bird to make a nest. But that being Said I have never tried it And I dont think Im gonna try anything with overpriced bird spit in it.
@blurnobody3 жыл бұрын
Not sure about some harvesters, but the smart and general practice is to wait until the birds have finished hatching their young and leave the nest. They don't reuse the nest, although they will come back to the same location the next year. I say smart because any long-term harvester would not want to do anything to jeapordize future income, and killing baby birds means no adult birds to make nests in future. I'm not a harvester, but it's pretty common in some outskirt villages in my country, and anyone you talk to who has a "bird house" (a building that's been built/converted to encourage swifts to nest there so their used nests can later be harvested) will tell you: always check before you harvest. If there's a baby bird inside, you leave it alone.
@gregorywhatley96593 жыл бұрын
@@blurnobody that's a fair point but i don't know if I would trust everyone to run it ethically. In our history as a species we've shown time and time again that we will exploit another species to extinction if more money can be made. If the birds are not nesting in your barn and are nesting in a cliff top or something like that, I don't trust that people competing with each other to find bird nests will wait until the birds are gone before trying to make their paycheck.
@blurnobody3 жыл бұрын
@@gregorywhatley9659 Can't say much for the old practice of cave nest harvesting, but commercial birds nest harvesting has pretty much been the norm for over a decade now in several parts of South East Asia. However, I was told that the old process of harvesting nests from caves is even more niche (and incredibly dangerous) and that the climbers generally do know to wait for the nests to be empty before they harvest them. Whether that's true for everyone or just the folks I spoke to, can't be sure. There wasn't much commercial competition for them, considering how hard and dangerous harvesting nests in caves is, and the commercialised bird houses makes it even less appealing now at any rate. Why bother to risk your neck for a small amount of harvest that might or might not fetch a high price when you could set up a building and waltz in every couple of weeks to have a look around for empty nests? I can understand the worry for the birds and their hatchlings, but, as I said, it's not really something done in common practice. Long term gains over short term idiocy and all that. Birds nest harvesting being commercialised also drove the price down quite a bit, so quantity is definitely required to turn a profit, and jeapordizing the population would mean a harvester dumping money into setting up a bird house only to shoot themself in the foot by reducing the overall population. The birds are also quite hard to attract to the houses sometimes, so once they have a few, you can bet they will want to continue keeping them coming generation after generation.
@gregorywhatley96593 жыл бұрын

@HaydenX5 жыл бұрын
I'm a big fan of this drink...but I really like lumpy drinks. I'm also a big fan of grass jelly drink, boba (bubble tea), and aloe drinks. The flavor to me is like a blend of cream soda and straw/hay...a very sweet dry grass flavor. Every time I go to the Asian market near me, I get a drink...and it's usually a tough call between this, sugar cane, mangosteen, basil seed, white gourd, grass jelly, and Thai iced tea (strongly recommended for everyone on this one, it's just flavored tea, sugar, and cream and it's criminally under-available in the West considering its potential mass appeal). I don't really have an "ick" factor when it comes to food, so something has to be actually dangerous for me to have qualms about it (fugu and casu marzu come to mind). Oh, also the "white fungus" mentioned is a specific species also called snow fungus and silver ear fungus which is widely eaten throughout Asia and has been used medicinally...its mild anti-inflammatory properties actually have some small scientific studies to back up the claim, but that's also a relatively common medicinal effect to find in reasonably healthy foods, including other commonly-eaten fungi.

Hi atomic shrimp! it is actually a sort of delicacy in the asian culture, it is said to have some health benefits! www.euyansang.com.sg/en/7-things-to-know-about-birds-nest/eysfood2.html thrs a link here if you want to check out its uses, also I highly doubt the drink you had is of authentic bird nest ( or at least it is definitely not high grade bird nest) as it is actually very expensive, and in asia you usually brew the soup yourself instead of it coming from a can. The bird nest used for canned drinks are usually either fake or just the bits and pieces rejected/unused. It is common where i come from to send it as a gift to the elderly but i find it weird as well to eat a bird's spit

I'm just curious, what do you do with the stuff you don't like? Obviously, you paid for it, if you want to throw it away, that's fine. But I always hope you try to salvage it - for food, you're a good cook, I imagine you can make the best of something even if it's not the most pleasant. But drinks... it's hard to change the end product of a gross liquid, and it's not like you can pour all those chemicals in the garden. Have you managed to salvage any of the more unpleasant products, or do they just feed the bin?
@AtomicShrimp3 ай бұрын
It doesn't happen all that often - my tastes are pretty broad. I did tip the rest of this away, and for very sugary drinks, I don't always consume the whole lot - there was a can of malt beverage that I reduced down to syrup and used as the sweetener in some homemade ketchup, but generally, I would tip it away, on the rare occasions that I really don't want any more of it.
