@Atomic Shrimp Finn here, here's rough translation of label's backside text. Fish cock: "Old familiar (recipe), now with more salmon! Smoked salmon cock is perfect quick packed meal (for camping) or busy lunch. It's also delicious and healthy." Ham cock: "All new! Ham cock is perfect quick packed meal (for camping) or busy lunch. It's also delicious and healthy. ". Fish cock (lol) is traditional mostly in eastern Finland and usually filled with vendace or European perch. There's even Wikipedia page of kalakukko in English, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalakukko , from the pictures you can understand why it's called "rooster". It looks a bit different when canned. I didn't even know it's sold tinned before this video, but hey, Varusteleka sells all kinds of crazy stuff.

Suomi mainittu, torille! Nice attempt at pronouncing "varusteleka". Yeah, the company does embrace silly innuendos. They are cool. Your translation of the ingredients list for the kalakukko ignored rapeseed oil and pea protein. Interesting that you chose a pig picture while eating the fish product, and a fish picture while eating the pig product. This kalakukko contains salmon. Traditionally it should actually contain vendace.

The kukko (rooster) name probably comes from the size and shape of the real thing, which is akin to a whole grilled chicken. I'm Finnish but I've never had this. I'm from the capital area on the southern coast and this kukko concept is decidedly Eastern Finnish. You can buy the proper version only in Eastern Finland where they sell this at outdoor food markets. It's quite old-fashioned and not very popular among young people.

Weird nordic canned fish is always full of surprises. And I'll appreciate that the ham one is called kinkkukukko, because that strengthens the idea that finnish is a funny language. At least they put the ingredients in swedish as well, that helps a lot with deciphering.

I'm not sure if it is an *intentional* double entendre. I visited the Kalakalle homepage and used Google Translate to read the ingredients of their cubed grilled chicken in Swedish (since my Finnish reading skill is useless enough to cause serious misunderstandings), before I discovered that Kalakalle already had made a translation into Swedish, as well as one into English. Their Swedish language ingredients list was weird enough that I didn't recognise it, at a quick glance, as being written in Swedish . The Swedish language ingredients contained "cycklingkött" (bycycling meat, they meant to say "kycklingkött" (chicken meat)) and "rypsölja" (a non-sence word, that I find hilarious (lots of possible wordplay in very rare mainland Swedish dialects), the correct translatation is "rybsolja" (colza seed oil, I guessing that word is used in Fenno-Swedish), or, as we usually call it in mainland Swedish, "rapsolja" (rape seed oil, since we, mainland Swedes, usually lumps all oil extracted from variants of mustards into the moniker "rapsolja" (rape seed oil)). The English language ingredients list contains "rape oil" (rape seed oil). Eitherreally dark sence of humour, or a mistranslation. Either the person that made the translation into Swedish and English, had a really weird sense of humour, or (s)he was just not that good in other languages. I'm guessing the second one. This is not meant as a criticism of the person who made the translation from Finnish into Swedish and English. This translation into Swedish is way better than most translations made by Google Translate, or other translation software. Somewhat unrelated, nobody should ever use Google Translate as anything but a help when reading a language that they already have some knowledge of. Google Translate make really nasty mistranslations, often it translate sentences to the opposite of what they mean ("I love you" become "I hate you"), or the AI translates sentences to something completely unrelated. Google Translate usually produce translations that is grammatically correct, and spelled correctly, but that just make any misuse of the software more dangerous. I prefer bad grammar and spelling in a human made translation, to a machine made mistranslation, with perfect grammar and spelling, that could cause serious misunderstandings.
@BlackBelgianDog
@BlackBelgianDog 4 жыл бұрын
@Martin Jansson At Kalakalle that translation might be unintentional as they introduce themselves as small family business and might not have professional help for translations, but in Varusteleka's product page they really had fun with it. www.varusteleka.com/en/product/kalakalle-fish-cock-182-g-canned/27360 "Because it's healthy AND it tastes good, this food resembles much like a situation where you are enjoying your beer in a bar and a pretty young girl comes up to you and asks if you would like to go to her place for some good times. A deal too good to be true. Except with this food delicacy there is *no* *hidden* *cock* *included*." "...this food originally comes from Savo, a remote location in the middle of Finland known for inbreeding and incapacity to form sentences that mean anything.". And believe me, text in Finnish product page is much dirtier :-D

Also, Swedish from sweden is different from finn-swedish. finns sound like a 5yr old with crayons in their mouth to a Swede when using the finn-svenska, and finns that actually learned swedish at school, find it that what they were taught was not real swedish, which is more related to swahili than finn-svensk (atleast to our ears)

The Varusteleka guys are awesome. They run a shooting competition with Inrangetv in Finland, and they come down to the US every year (except this year obviously) to shoot a match here. Plus their surplus selection is amazing.

Noticed that it said "Svinkött" (lit. "Swine meat") in the Swedish ingrediens list and thought it was a bit odd. Usually we use "Fläsk" (Pork), "Fläskkött" (Pork meat) or "Griskött" (Pig meat) (or "Skinka", lit. "Ham" [or "buttocks"]) for meat of pig, in Sweden. I can't remember that I've seen "Svinkött" used before (which of course doesn't mean that it hasn't been used). Did a Google search and only found 2 or 3 hits on Swedish sites (ignoring Thesaurus sites etc), but a lot of Finnish sites (newspapers, Food administration etc). So I guess it's a "Finland Swedish" thing. Interesting (To me, at least ;D ).. :D I love the Weird Stuff In A Can series! :)

Greetings from Finland. I've eaten fish cock (no pun intended) on its traditional form, it is certainly an interesting piece of food. Also peoples have pointed out that we have the ham + mustard combo, I do that as well. Nice attempts at pronouncing Finnish though.

Varusteleka is a military surplus store mainly, and for the finnish military is a conscription based army, some surplus german milspec underwear beats the company issued ones. All 18 yos must go on to 6-12 months of basic traning, and you can supplement the rations with homebrought stuff, and this product is designed as such; An additional ration you can buy online and have delivered to your barracks at the same time you order paracord as the funding is not enough to provide that for the troops. Canned tuna is the basic, so having salmon with ruisleipä is luxury even at home.

That actually looks pretty good. I go (or went as the current situation stands) to the physical Varusteleka store pretty often, but always sneered at the cans thinking it's just cat food in a naff rye loaf. Will pick both up next time I'm there.

never tasted those, nor the traditional one. Its more of a tradition in northern parts of finland. The real old version is made like a beef wellington and insides have whole small fishes like vendace fish and cuts of pork and pork fat and made as a huge loaf. Varusteleka is a fun place for weird foods sometimes, ones in a while they also sell old mre's :)
