BIRDS of Washington State • Winter Backyard Birdwatching in the Puget Sound Region

As we enter the holiday season we are taking a break from our Oregon Coast Series to spend time with family and friends.
We'd also like to take a moment to thank each and every one of you for your friendship, kind words and support. It helps us continue to do what we love. We appreciate you more than you know.
Climatologically, there is only about a 10% chance on average of an inch of snow on the ground at Sea-Tac Airport on Christmas each year, with a greater chance of snow at higher elevations away from Puget Sound.
Here at 500', we are receiving our first snowfall of the season on December 20th and while chances typically are very low for a white Christmas it's looking like it actually might happen this year. This brings many birds into our yard and can be an really exciting time for birdwatching.

The birds look so pretty in snow. One of my favorite shoots was when I put feeds outside my rv. On that rv the windows and screens would slide open and I could take photos from inside. This is so beautiful! Great job! Merry Christmas yall

Thank you very much! It's amazing but the Anna's Hummingbird is here year-round. We've had a lot of snow recently, which is uncommon. The poor little hummingbirds really struggle, so we have warmers on the nectar feeder to keep it thawed. We are so glad you enjoyed the video. Those are beautiful clips and photos that you’ve taken. I really enjoyed seeing the details in the birds especially the woodpeckers and the hummingbirds in a snowy area. Where do the wintering hummingbirds feed? Is daily food being put out? We had several hummingbird species lingering here for much longer this year than previous years so I kept up with our feeder but they have gone now. Take care, Char 😊

Thank you very much - we are so glad you enjoyed. The wintering hummingbirds here, 'Anna's Hummingbird' feeds on insects and spiders in addition to the nectar of winter blooming plants. They will eat insects trapped in tree sap but also sip the sap itself as an alternative when nectar is scarce. Sap has a similar sugar content. They survive on protein from insects and are fueled by nectar. 😊 They are amazing little birds. Thanks so much for watching - have a wonderful day!

Wonderful! I can tell the birds love you as much as you love them! Great photos- nice that you have a golden-crown sparrow! We see quite a few of the others in our area too, but haven’t seen that sparrow or such a nice woodpecker! I’m not sure when you got snow, but we got about 8” on Christmas and then 4” more a few days later, and it’s been below freezing, so it’s mostly sticking around. It''s been so nice to have such a variety of birds to watch and keep us company. We got about the same amount around Christmas too, today is the first day we finally have some melting, thank goodness. But it's still icy. Wow! You guys get a wide variety of birds - the Varied Thrush is so pretty! And I am surprised the hummingbirds get enough food to winter through - they must be dining on hibernating insects they find?

Thank you very much, Brenda. Yes, the Anna's Hummingbird is a year-round resident here. It's been brutal cold the past couple weeks, which makes it difficult for them as it's unusual for us to have such a long stretch of arctic air blasting our area. We've had warmers on the nectar feeders to help keep them thawed.It's been such a pleasure and brought us great joy connecting with you through this platform. We wish you all the very best in 2022. @@JC.Journey oh wow They must be strong birds to deal with that arctic cold. We get only one type of HB a Ruby Throated. Love them. They leave end of Sept to early Oct. sure do miss them.
