We had a great opportunity to go on a Birding trip to Bruny Island while Nimal was at a conference in Hobart, Tasmania. We packed our bags, hopped on a plane & explored Hobart and Bruny Island to see as many endemic birds of Tassie that we could in a very short time.
We throw in a few other fun things to do in Hobart - bus trip to Kunanyi (Mount Wellington), exploring the Hobart Botanic Gardens & renting an e-bike along the rivulet to the Cascade Brewery.
So what birds did we see on this trip?
Yellow Wattlebird
Kelp Gull
Tasmanian Thornbill
Green Rosella
White-bellied Sea-eagle
Tasmanian Nativehen (and chicks!!)
Flame Robin
Australian Pipit
We also saw one of Bruny Island's endemic White Bennett's Wallaby.... but all we got was one photo so you'll have to wait until the end of the video to see how cute he was!!

Typing this while still in NZ. I felt the same enthusiasm when attending the Tiritiri M. Island and saw some beautiful endemic birds. I would love to visit Tasmania one day, if even just for birding...lol. Thanks for sharing!

Love your channel and your adventures guys. As a fellow Melbournian birder and looking to enhance that lifelong love with some photography of the birds I observe, I appreciate you sharing some great birding areas as I have only lived in Mexico...I mean Victoria.... for 7 years haha. All jokes aside I love it here! I am also going to share your videos in my FB wildlife group to get some more views and supporters as you deserve it. Merry Christmas, Michael

Great info. We're birders based in Japan and now planning a trip to Tasmania after a month in Australia in August/Sept 2024. Couldn't fit Tasmania on the schedule that trip.

@@marcusgrandon3640 You’ll have a great time in Tassie. If you are planning a birding trip, spend most of your time on Bruny Island. For wildlife, I’d recommend staying at Cradle Mountain. We have another video on Tassie 2 months later where we toured around but even though the coast is pretty, the inland areas are far more interesting. Our next Tasmania trip will definitely be quality time on Bruny! 😊 ~ K

We definitely do need to go back... and with a car!! It was a great opportunity to be there and enjoy Hobart while Nimal was at the conference but there wasn't much time for both of us to explore & see the wildlife. Even the trip to Bruny involved many hours sitting on the bus instead of being out there in nature. Next time!! 😀 ~ Karen

Tassie is great for birds but if we were going there again, we would stay 4 nights on Bruny Island and 4 nights at Cradle Mountain. The bus trip we did to Bruny on this visit just didn't give us enough time to stay anywhere long enough to see anything. And our more recent trip to Tassie in January we didn't see many birds at all along the coast. Best spot on that trip was inland around the Tamar Valley ~ Karen

Bruny is great. We stayed on the island for a few days .Lots of eastern quolls at night. Albino red-necked wallabies around Adventure Bay.

We have ambitions of going back & staying on Bruny for a few days. We just didn't get the full experience or see all the wildlife we would have liked on one day in a bus! I'd love to see Eastern Quolls!! ❤ ~ Karen

@@naturephotographychallengeI really do agree! Though I’m currently in India for uni… awesome that you got to see a fsp! Where did you catch that? I’ve only seen them at Inala on Bruny when doing nest surveys.

@@palebluedot3192 Wow India! What are you studying that takes you to India?? The fsp was seen on Bruny but I really don't know where as the bus driver stopped on the side of the road. We saw Swift Parrots & Green Rosellas there too. I wish we could have stayed at that spot longer but it was a quick "get out & back on the bus" kind of thing.

I got swooped by what I thought was a Wedgie when I got off the Kettering ferry @ Sth. Bruny many years ago. Was riding a bike(no E-bikes back then!). Wasn't a birder at that time but now I think it might have been a White Bellied Sea Eagle. Had a giant nest about 2k from the ferry dock. Might have been the one you saw! Great video per usual. ps you'll get to 1k subs. and then some.

Most enjoyable. I live in Tasmania and I also enjoy photography. If you ever get the chance like I have , Cam at Cam Blake Photography takes photographers down to the South west to Bathurst Harbour for a 3 day trip. It is a great place for birds. Among others you will see the endangered swift parrot.

Cam only does a few trips a year to Bathust Harbor with 6 customers each time so you might want to look him up a year in advance. It is fly in and out with a boat at their disposal when there.

So sorry this was just a working trip, mostly. Just think about what could've been seen if that time could've been spent 100% birding. Well, this time it wasn't, so you managed well despite the circumstances, imo. You got at least some of the endemics... but not all, I gather? Renting a e-bike was a great idea, I think. Especially since it ended well, without any nasty traffic incidents! Some very nice footage, like the Turbo Chook with chicken. Was that bus-trip to Bruny Island an organized "tourist"-trip? So many questions...☺
@naturephotographychallenge
@naturephotographychallenge 10 ай бұрын
Yes we didn't have long at all and without a car, it's difficult to get around. The e-bike was fun but I didn't want to go too far (and I was hoping to see a platypus in the rivulet... but didn't). The bus trip was organised by the conference people so everyone on there (apart from me) were participating in the conference but were keen on birdwatching. The problem was that the bus driver tried to show us every interesting part of Bruny but that left us little time to actually get off the bus & look for birds. It would be so much more fun to go back & see way more of Tassie with a car on a holiday! ~ Karen

It's well worth taking your car on the Spirit of Tasmania if you're planning a longer trip to Tassie, especially if you already live in Victoria.

That would be ideal for our next trip! We were kind of stuck in Hobart (which was really nice anyway) but if we are both there to have a good look around, a car is definitely the way to go!!
