My exact thoughts, city people tend to travel on dirt roads as if they are sealed, you really do need to drop your speed quite a bit, especially when towing. One of the first things I was told when working out in the bush for a large earth moving company driving the company four wheels drives.

On the steep western face you approached on level ground from a large clay pan.the dune swept upwards in steep slope consistent rise to the top, not in several gradual steepening sections.. At the top you accessed a large flattish, slight easterly down slope. But the rise ended on the highest region of the dune. Not a soft hump dropping a fair way in easterly side just afteredge, Nd no higher sand drift just southerly.

@@shreckm6470 Agree. 10% of towed weight should be on the ball, and I was talking about weight distribution on the trailer. Excess weight behind the trailer wheels to balance too much downforce on the towball is courting disaster. Think pendulum. One won't bend a car if you stay within the recommendations of the vehicle manufacturer. Also one must drive to the conditions and if one is towing the conditions are different - slow down! I should have had it in 4WD instead of 2WD and I left pressures in tyres at 35psi all round. I also should have travelled at 40-50 kph. Thank you for this video. You have really woken me up about the dirt roads. Mars campers like this are heavy. They may have really long towing triangles but that meant nothing when your left rear went flat. Gotta love people who do a stuff up going down the hill into Dargo giving advice. Really. And this video was certainly not a video about safety - in the beginning they hooked 2 winch hooks together on a ridiculously dangerous recovery. If one of the ropes had snapped, the hooks would have swung in a perfect trajectory through the windscreen(s) and through the heads of the occupant. Then they towed a ridiculously heavy trailer behind a tow vehicle not equipped to tow such heavy load. It was just lucky they didn't get badly hurt or worse, and lucky no unfortunate traveller coming the other way copped it.

Young folks today, think everything is just a big lark. Tackling the O.B. is NOT a lark, it's serious business and can at times, be bloody dangerous. I too, spend hours towing my camper around, last time 4, 000 K's in W.A.'s Pilbara. Goes without saying, you drive to the conditions, especially on gravel roads, and more so if your towing. I restrict myself to 60-70 K's on dirt, sometimes even slower, pending on the road conditions, have been caught out a couple of times where the road looked good until entering a shadow dip which turned out to be a gully full of bulldust, at 80 K's we were very lucky with just bottoming out, but could have had far more serious repercussions if going faster. PLEASE, note outback dirt roads and towing require a little brain power, otherwise things WILL go pear shape. Take care.

Cheap tyres: Rydanz Raptor Testing has shown that poor quality tyres can blowout the sidewall instantly. The rig would've started to jack-knife. The blue ute was UNDER-loaded at the back. The trailer is OVER-loaded at the front and on the tow hitch. The type of tow hitch is not for extreme 4WDing and doesn't allow large roll motions. The trailer would have been pushing the back of the ute downwards and sideways. The driver panic, stand on the brake and over-correct with the steering wheel, causing loss of traction. The driver's braking and steering causes the rollover.

No use on a sharp rock at that speed, it just pops like a balloon. Too costly for the average Joe though.
@78Bonne3 жыл бұрын
Tyres don't just 'pop' with no lead up. They gradually get hotter and/or the pressure gradually increases to the point where they explode. a TPMS would have alerted you to both those scenarios, and assuming you're smart enough to act on what it's telling you, a catastrophe will be averted. I absolutely agree with @Mick Anon, they're worth their weight in gold.
