Do you have to use a clicker to train? What other things if at all can be used?

I truly want to add a bird back into my life. Due to my being 59, lack of a large space, and finances I want a small parrot. I also don't want to leave a bird homeless should something to me so I'm thinking an older rescue bird. Maybe a Budgie, Cockatiel, or a Parrotlet. I need somewhat quiet too because I live in a condo. Last bird I was owned by was in the late 1990s. I know things have really changed. I want to teach targeting, give my feathered friend, your seasonal feeding system, an recall flights. Some fun tricks would be great too. I'm being realistic here. I'm healthy except for needing to lose weight. I've got many family members who live into their 90's. I just don't think it's responsible for me to add my dream bird of a Green Wing Macaw or a Hyacinth Macaw. I love the companionship a parrot supplies. And this time my fid (feathered kid) would get the best I can provide.

You could get a 20+ year old macaw. Develop a relationship with your local rescue just for peace of mind if you can’t find someone willing to take your parrot.

I wish I had a sweet macaw like Marvin. I instead I have a schizophrenic one that will be enjoying head scratches on second and then latched onto your appendage the next second.

Watching this as my 8 month old conure bites me😰 Ive got a problemo, lol. Off to search "how to stop biting conures" 😅 Thanks for sharing🐦💗
@galeem7132 жыл бұрын
I stopped my 3 conures from biting me by saying “No bites, only kisses.” After a bite, I would say this and put my finger just close enough to touch, not bite, and say an effusive “Thank you. Good kiss” and give a treat. The value of the bite lowered and the value of the kiss and treat and my pleasure rose. I cannot remember the last time I was bitten.

Could this type of training be taught to an Indian ringneck and what's the clicker for do you press it when he or she does something good. Thanks in advance.
@MrJdubz1002 жыл бұрын
Yes it could and the clicker is for reinforcing the behavior. Its the equivalent of “good”. I personally just use good.

@@MrJdubz100 thank you so much for replying to me I pick my gray ringneck up on Friday 7 months old he or she is. I will put the hours in. All the very best from Liverpool UK.

Yes I would watch as many bird tricks videos as you can to get as much knowledge as possible. Since you live in the UK I would try Mikey and Mias chop and a healthy pellet like Tops.

Hi so im asking for advice because i recently got a green cheek and hes really scared of my hands. He did eat some veggies and drink but for most of the time hes sitting on a toy, staring into the void and ocassionally pulling a crinkle paper out. When i got him i made a huge mistake of grabbing him and now i feel like he doesnt trust my hands or me one bit. He does eat millet from a really short distance from my hand but nothing else. Hes eating and drinking and playing but he just "freezes" when im near. And i think its super suspicious that hes really quiet, just a rare squeak. He also often just falls asleep in the middle of the day. Do you have any advice because im really desparate

So the first thing that I'd like to share with you is maybe you need to target train. Use a stick, a chopstick or even a pencil will work, and hold it a bit away from him. When he goes up to it out of curiosity, use the clicker or your tounge or just a quick "good" when he touches it, and prompty reward him. Since he's afraid of your hands, use a food bowl and drop the treat in that. Keep working with him on it, and moving it around, you can use it to get him into and out of a cage even. After a while, you'll build a different kind of trust and bond through training, and he'll trust you enough for you to be able to use it to target him onto your hand. Once there, give him a jackpot reward (a lot of treats, maybe 4-8), and stop the session there. He'll be so excited for the next session, and you can work with him like that until he's without fear and trusts you. For him falling asleep duting the day, his circadian rhythm might be out of whack. Try opening the curtains and turning on the lights and add some background noise through the day, and make sure he's getting 12 hours. Make sure this time is quiet, dark (almost or completely black depending on which he prefers), and away from people or other pets that might disturb him, even accidentally. If this issue isn't resolved in a week or two, take him to the vet to make sure he's okay. Good luck!

How recent is recent? I have 4 green cheeks and they all started out scared of hands and quiet but within a few months and with VERY little effort they seem to naturally stop fearing familiar people. I have a cuddly girl (Clover) an adventurous boy (West) a neurotic demanding girl who wants to fight everyone for attention (Reggae) and one totally in the middle boy (Palette) but they’re definitely not scared or nervous anymore and I did nothing but spend time with them. Yours will most likely come around if you’re patient and kind to him/her.

@@TaraAndFriends Thank you so much! He is much more playful now, he now comfortably steps up and i started recall training him (hes getting pretty good!) I think he just needed some time to calm down from the long drive when we brought him home. He loves a vine ball toy and pulling and making a mess from the crinkle paper xD. The one thing i need to work with is biting. He loves just niping my hands, and if i dont move them away he'd increase pressure until it hurts, so if you have any tips on that, id be more than happy to hear! Also im trying my best to give 12 hours but the stubborn birb he is, he hates going to sleep xD
@TaraAndFriends2 жыл бұрын
@@emabarlic3427 You're definitely getting there it sounds like! As for biting, you can also use the target training to get only a light touch of his beak. If he bites it, he doesn't get a click and reward. If he touches it gently, that's where he gets the rewards.
