I was uprooted from my home and away from my friends who I call family, had suicidal thoughts but I listened to this song every night until eventually I got better, I see better. This version is beautiful, but completely incomparable to Bon Iver's. Birdy sings it from a teenager's point of view, where everything is so black and white. Bon Iver sings it from an experienced point of view, where nothing is black and white. He wrote the song to be a mix of emotions, and sings it as so. Not only is he sad, but angry, and acknowledges the joy he has felt in the relationship as well. Birdy has given the song more of a pained feeling, which is perfect for young heart break. However, Bon Iver sings the song with passion and expresses truth that relationships are more complicated than purely depression after heartbreak. It pains me when people say this version is so much better because I feel as though they are missing the point of what the song is written about. It is not about sadness, it is about love.

I think Birdy approached the song in a inconsolable way (probably the emotions from a past relationship) and Bon had a more upbeat tempo which hints towards the topic of love, rather than sadness. However, "Staring at the sink of blood and crushed veneer" hints at depression, and in my opinion, the 'crushed veneer' is her skin and the blood is hers. I think she's referring to self harm, and also 'skinny love' might be her? The whole "I told you" part hints at this, well to me anyway. But, that's the incredible thing about music, everyone creates their own interpretations.

***** I think the fact that you're not at all reading into it is much, much worse than hardly reading into it and judging the song difference purely by voices. This is, after all, Bon Ivers song. I have known and loved it for much longer than I have even known that this version was a thing so yes, I am biased. But what I think important is what you get out of the song, I hope you look into it enough to get something from it or that when you mean voices, you mean emotions. But music does different things for different people and I guess it's just good that people are enjoying both versions.
