My mother passed away in 2015. She was born in 1926, my grandparents in the 1800s. I grew up cooking on her/my grandparents CI. At the time of her death we just packed things up and put it in the garage. I recently got it all out. WOW what I never knew about CI. Things I wish I could ask her. I have her oval sizzle pan like yours, it does not have the pit on the side. Didn’t know it was a BSR until I saw your video. Found in her CI a CHF, Wagner ,BSR skillet, 3 notch Lodges, a 1 notch Lodge , one that I have no idea what it could be. I was raised here in Florence AL and Remember the foundry. Was surprised she didn’t have a Martin. I have since bought 2. Have learned so much from your videos. Thank you !

Thanks Stephen so much for taking the time to share your passion of cast iron cookware. I am a carpenter by trade,last year I was looking for really something to piddle and do when I was being lazy I guess. My mom gave me a stack of cast iron skillets that she wanted cleaned up and seasoned. I didn't know where to begin,so I turned to KZbin and discovered your channel. What I learned was so helpful, I now have around fifteen pieces I have redone. One piece I did was a B S and R chicken frier and lid I gave to my daughter. My oldest skillet is a nu.3 one notch lodge,but I have several B S and R pieces I have acquired. Seems they are plentiful here in Georgia. Thanks again

You are absolutely welcome and I am so glad that I was able to help you get started on this journey as well. I live in Alabama and BSR is plentiful over here as well. One of the reasons I started with BSR. It's kind of funny, BSR started with Atlanta Stove Works in Georgia. In your neck of the woods. Cast iron cookware is a great collecting Hobby. Sometimes it is an obsession.

I’m really hoping to find this blue ribbon biscuit pan but I’m in Upstate NY so I’m limited in what I find here but I’ve found a few BSR skillets while out and about so I’m definitely not giving up. Of course I check online as well. I missed good deals on past sales before I knew I wanted one. Anyways thanks again for the video. Really fun.

I just picked up a #8 Red Mountain series skillet that's a bit unusual. At first I thought the heat ring was worn down pretty badly but now that I've cleaned it up I can see a low spot in the ring where the texture of the casting sand shows. My guess is rather than the heat ring on the pan being worn, it was the ring on the pattern that was just about gone. The low spot is barely above the bottom and the rest of the ring is barely above the low spot. Kinda cool at any rate.

@@castIroncookware It's kinda thin for a BSR too, like I said I'm inclined to think it's from a pattern that had been reground and polished just about to the end of it's usefulness. Or maybe not, but yeah, that's the sort of thing that makes cast iron interesting.

I have used cast iron for cooking my entire adult life. I had the perfect teacher to show me the unending worth of a few good cast iron pans......my dear Grandmother. I really enjoy your shows and thank you for sharing your knowledge with all of us. I have several good using pieces,odds and ends mostly. But I dream of pulling entire sets together like I see you have all nesting so neatly in the back ground of your home videos.. and I definitely want one of those “grand daddy” large rectangular griddles that you found in one of your visits to Alabama. Can you please let me know the size and info on it. I will be searching for that gem for sure. Thanks again for your wonderful programs and Thank you for adding the scriptures to your endings, they are up lifting to all.Sincerely, Marla

Now that I have my collection out where I can see it and get to the pieces easier, I realize I need to do a lot of maintenance to get them looking better. That is part of the fun of it though. I think that I have traded away all of my large griddles and I do not have one to reference the size but they'll come in all sizes and shapes. Grandparents are super special and we have so much to learn from them. Thank you for watching and also thank you for the encouragement.

Cast Iron Cookware can you do a show on griddle ‘s Like what company’s made them, sizes and shapes , makers marks. All that wonderful information that you share so well. I found an old 7 inch flat round skillet the other day in an antique store. It has the gate mark on the bottom and a raised no. 7 on a fancy handle. Can I send you a picture of it to help me identify it? If that is ok how do I send it to you as the picture is on my IPhone. And also I live in Utah and there is not the wonderful selection of cast iron here like you good folks in the South, Midwest and East have so Pickens are slim here. Do you or some one that you can refer me to sell sets or pieces, so that I can pull my sets together. I want to pass down sets to my adult children after I am gone, and I am age sixty five now with heart health issues so I had better be getting busy to get this accomplished. I know Utah isn’t that good of a hunting ground, so please advise. Thank you kindly, Marla. Also I have three notch Lodges size 14, 12, 10, 8 skillets I would like to finish that set all the way down to the smallest one.. also I have a couple of Wagner ware skillets a 5, and 8 inch and a combo chicken fryer set. Mainly odds and ends that I find and clean up, but all flat bottomed and good users. And to me that’s the best point to have these pans is to use them and enjoy the food with your family.

Your biscuit pan at the start of the video reminds me of my (probably 1970s or 80s?) CI popover pan from Lodge. They look similar, but the details are different. I don't know the year of manufacture, though I bought it brand new with tags. It was made before Lodge started pre-seasoning. The biscuit pan is a lot more shallow. Nice video!.

Steven I have commented on your videos before about getting your cast iron cleaned with baking soda from a sand blasting company. I really wish you would give this a try and comment on it. This would give people an option that are too old or live in an apartment that can't clean their cast iron themselves. Here is company I used www.alabamasodablasting.com/ it's in Birmingham and they will call you when it's ready usually 3 or 4 days. Do it when the week is going to have no rain and low humidity and reseason as soon as possible. If Birmingham is too far from you call around to you local blasting company's to see if they do baking soda blasting. I think you will be impressed with the results.

I have a dutch oven that I have not used in years because the lid on this dutch oven has dimples (or little cones) on the inside. When I would use it, they would rust after drying. I tried to dry this lid completely but I guess that it did not completely get it dry. Now the whole lid has a sticky, feel and smells bad. I have tried scrubbing it but nothing seemed to help. I would like to use this dutch oven again but it is sticky and stinks!!!
@castIroncookware5 жыл бұрын
You can give it a good scrub with dishwashing liquid then apply very thin coat of oil and bake it in the oven for 1 hour at 500 degrees. That sticky and stinky is old rancid oil. Whatever residue is left after cleaning will bike away and polymerize. That happens to a lot of storage pieces. Dutch oven Lids really tend to be hard to keep seasoned. You just have to make sure that you oil it and wipe off all of the excess after each use.
@brantmorrison37045 жыл бұрын
After you clean and touch-up the seasoning on your DO you might want to store it with the lid off, or if you have to put the lid on, use a couple layers of dry brown paper shopping bags between the lid and kettle to promote air circulation. Consider keeping your lid upside down on the DO and still use the brown paper. After you wash and towel dry your DO, warm it in the oven at 250F or above for 20 minutes or more to drive off the moisture. Moisture left behind by simple towel drying might be where the moisture is coming from that starts the rust.
