I work at a cast iron foundry and the material used to butter over certain numbers or names on patterns is a stiff pliable wax. they sometimes remove the wax and affix the letters and numbers back on certain patterns, depending on what the job they are running at the time.

They are over rated. Like you I didn’t know of them, found a couple and bought them, made corn bread in them a few times and realized that cornbread made in a round skillet and cut into wedges tastes better. The ratio of bread to crust is off with those pans.

Sticky and tacky cast iron is usually old oil that has gone rancid. I will usually wash with dish soap and a scrubby. If there are grill lines involved, I will use my Lodge silicone grooved scraper. You can add some table or kosher salt to help with tough pieces. If you have good seasoning, it should hold up to the process. Just make sure that you dry afterwards and apply your preferred seasoning oil. Wipe off all excess oil with a paper towel before storing.

I picked up a Griswold # 12 large Logo Skillet the other day, but it has a handle on it that I have not seen on other Griswolds. I can’t figure out what “model” it is. Maybe an iron mountain Version...? The handle does not have a triangle at the base. The handle instead gradually goes “into” the pan. It has a heat ring, says iron skillet across the top and says Erie Pa USA along the bottom without made in the USA. Any idea what it is?

WOW! This video helped me Identify a lot more accurately My 2 BSR Corn-stick pans...well one for sure and the second is still just quite not dated...but close enough for me...The first is The Red Mountain Series...the second because of the letter font seems to be from the Century Series but totally aligned different from what you have shown on yours.

I had a few other examples that were a little bit different but the video was starting to get a little longer than maybe it should have been and I didn't show them. I still have a lot of trouble condensing down to a nutshell.
@ManLand

@@castIroncookware Well that particular Font is written on what appears to be the Century Series is written on the center cornstick of the pan and is not along the length of the stick but rather written at the top of the stick across it's width...It has a Larger Type of 7 B then under neath I'm guessing a K and under that an F...

When you show the 7 and 3 in the beginning there is dark black marks on the inside. Is that burnt on food residue or new seasoning? I have a Lodge that looks the same and I tried getting it off and it won't come off.
@castIroncookware
@castIroncookware 5 жыл бұрын
It could be a combination of both but I think it is uneven seasoning. I never restored those when I got them. I was planning on doing that later but just have not had the opportunity. Even if I didn't strip it, I believe it would fill in overtime and be more even.

Hi, I know you are a cookware collector, but I wonder if you can help me find collectors or restorers who are knowledgeable about BSR &/or ASW? I have little stove (I understand it’s called a biscuit stove’). The door says Winner, Atlanta Stove Works, 8316. But the bottom says “Bottom Bonanza”. I told BSR bought ASW in 1957, and continued to produce stoves under both names. Apparently there is a BSR stove 8316, the Bonanza. Thanks Michael
