My old 2010 T800 had an ism 425v. It wouldn't pull a hill very fast but it hauled 40,000-70,000 pounds every week for about 800,000 miles and never had any major issues not even emissions issues.

I fell in love with Cummins engines in 1978, when at 18 I heard my first twin Cummins Marine engines on our rigs crew boat. The captain explained to me why Cummins is the only engines you can always depend on. Been driving the same Dodge Cummins truck since I bought her new in 1998. Ain't no other engines.

I'll take my Detroit Diesel Series 60 hooked up to my EF 10 speed any day. Pulls from around 700 rpm like a bear. I run 65,000 - 75,000 lbs loaded everyday, no problem. Most hills I only have to drop one gear, MAYBE two, tops.

Yeah I have a 3 hp Briggs in a 1961 TOTE GOTE , it has a 40 / 1 gear reduction using a CVT and a rear tractor tread tire, they were made to haul deer out of the woods, unreal low speed power.lol.

Looks great, like I can't wait for the customer complaints of low power, crappy mileage and excessive down time....I mean, I do get paid by the hour, but a guy can only do so much. Good thing is, Cummins always has another ECM software calibration update to cover up the previous issue...after three hours of pointless troubleshooting. Great products!! I recommend to all.

It's amazing how far engine design has come in that amount of time too. I think many people don't realize how much better engines have gotten just in the last 4-6 years since the late 2000's when all the manufactures were struggling with making a reliable tier 4 engine. Big companies felt the pain just like the customers and have invested heavily in improving these systems.

Cummins has come along way since their L 10 days. I work on all the heavy duty engines from Cummins Detroit Volvo now there’s a joke ha. And the super terrible International maxxforce which is no more. The A 27 is their new puppy. I can’t really say anything bad about a Cummins. Great power , Diagnostics is pretty good now. The best I think as a Technician comes down to preference only. They all have good and bad points. At least Cummins is building here in the states. Other manufacturers seem to have European parts suppliers. Fleetguard is Cummins owned here in the states to. A common misconception is that diesels are for light duty trucks like the Dodge Ram great selling point but facts are today’s diesels are to costly to purchase and maintain properly. Diagnostic software alone is 1000 bucks annually. And to pay a guy like me who can fix all the emissions lights that come on regularly with all heavy duty engines is another 65000 a year. Keeping up with technology at schools yearly. You get my point.

I've been working on cummins engines for the last 35 years. The l10 was a joke. The mlemon(11) was a hole lot better however, it leaked worse then a Detroit after its first year in service. If only the m11's had head studs and rocker box studs that were lock tight'Ed from the factory I would have seen at least 75 within the last year and thousands over my career. I'm getting ready to retire and here I have done 16 isx12's within the last six months. Cummins talked about improving, but all they have done is relocate the problems to further under the rocker box! At least do what CAT has done and take your name out of the hat until you can fox your problems! Just saying the Komatsu equipment and full size trucks, (peterbilt, kenworth, Volvo, freightliner, I), I work on would thank you for it! Sincerely your problem solver for the last 35 years and hope to retire, but you guys keep me in business, NWHEQ Red cross!

I can literally take my 2007 5.9 cummins with 193k miles on it and no emissions other than a Cat and Muffler (stock) and take a 2018 6.7 cummins or powerstroke or the 6.6 duramax turn the trucks on and let them idle. I guarantee the emissions equipped vehicles will stop running before mine not because of gas but because the emissions will literally kill the truck.

teller of truth riddle me this, how many epic failures has cummins produced if u want to compare Apple's to apple's, how many million plus mile cummins are out on the road today, there are numerous cat's that have achieved that mileage and have not been overhauled yet with the exception of maybe a water pump or something minor, i used to and still like the old big cam formula cummins but even those engines didn't crack a million miles and how do you go about drawing a comparison from a 3406 c cat from way back to a fairly new engine design the ism cummins, really. The kt cummins was a good high horsepower motor but it didn't last long, leaks, block flexing and broken cranks pretty much put an end to that motor, judging by your statement you've never driven a 1693 ta or 3408 di cat, to prove my statement has validity, when you see a fairly new rig broken down on the side of the road, 9 out of ten times it's going to be a crappy cummins, I'd take a detroit or a maxidine motor over a cummins anytime as well, i bid you a nice day.

Boost lord the lift pump doesn’t cause the failure, the failure is in the ceramic plungers coming apart and sending pieces of ceramic through the engine. No tuning will fix a mechanical failure in the pump.

For a engine to be a “hemi” the spark plug is located die center to top of piston in gas engines. For a Diesel engine the injector or nozzle needs to be mounted die center to piston to fall into a hemi classification. The 5.9 and 8.3 Cummins made were not hemis until they went with electronic in those engines. Cummins never installed diesels in the Ram 1500, they only went in the 3/4 and 1 ton chassis

My m11 has just done over a million on the clock. Once the trucks been overhauled the engine will be getting the same treatment for many more miles to be clocked up. Shes most likely good for more but its best to play it safe than see her blow her guts all over the road

I worked at peter built for a while there isx engines had a tsb on the fuel pumps. They put ceramic pistons in the fuel pump witch would break and wipe out the engine. Give me a cat any day!!

Wish we could still get n14s in uk . To fit to trucks . This 12 litre will hopefully better than the m11 that needed rebuilt after around 500.000 ks . Every m11 i know of has bn rebuilt about that milage . They pull ok but lack torque at times . The new emmissions just strangle modern engines . Todays 500 +engines are barly pulling much better that the old 400 plus engines of non emission control trucks . Ive found im not goin any quicker up hills with similar loads and weight on than i did years ago . With smaller engines . And im not pickin on cummins as its common on all modern diesels but i dont suppose its gonna change anyday soon . But yea could do with a manufactorer in uk or europe offering cummins again . I know they dont meet current and future proposed emmissions but im sure cummins will adress this in time to come thanks for posting .

Wish they would support and correct the engines they have. Our company has 3 2350 6.7 isbs pulled apart as I'm typing this, due to carbon packing resulting in cylinder destruction and blow by. 10 so far this year. Cummins blames freightliner, freightliner blames Cummins, no one pays warranty.

I've seen this happen in the marine field. I won't say what companies but it was between an engine manufacturer and a boat builder. They were both blaming each other for numerous failed cylinder heads. Needless to say, when a company is buying 60+ engines from you per year... you'll go a little farther to take care of the issue lol

Matt M, I feel your pain. If we don't have an ISX getting an in frame and the cylinder liner counter bores cut and shimmed, we are putting a two thousand dollar SCR catalyst on an ISB because it has a 3582 fault.

Yeah Cummins won't openly say they have a cylinder head problem, but I can tell you we have had a pile of failures this year, most with valve seat and guide failures resulting in all sorts of downstream damage. Instead of building more crap, they should pay the warranty claims they have on the junk they already built. And yes, it is epa related. However, they cylinder head failures are not due to emissions standards. And if you can't reliably meet the standards, get out of the business, don't continue to build junk at the consumer and dealers expense and place the blame every where else. Either you reliably meet epa standards, or don't. Good luck. Looking forward to the new dd5 and dd8. I know our customers are also.

My 550 isx cummins just seized solid at 470 000km. Not to impressed with Cummins right now. I can see after a million km it blowning up but not seized so hard a rolling push start with a pc300 komatsu on my float.... when i let the clutch out in 4th gear low side.... 18spd.... the wheels skidded. Thats pretty seized. Worst part was i was 100km up a logging road and no body around. Go thing its not February and -30c

Fortunately (I'm being sarcastic) you have the "extensive" network of Cummins "distributors" to fall back on in order to "repair" or "rebuild" that engine nobody else can/will touch. So you don't have to worry about "will-fit" parts and/or "shadetree mechanics" damaging that fine Cummins product further. Last I knew, an "overhaul" of an ISX was "only" $30,000 whether "completely shot" or just "worn out". But I suspect "locked up" doesn't fall into either category and I doubt any "Cummins distributor" will "rebuild" or "replace" even a "core engine" with anything less than the full $30,000 major thing. Especially if you can't find a "core" engine with a matching "Bill Of Materials". I find it funny that "Control Parts List" has gotten to be such a "dirty word" in the diesel industry that Cummins had to "overhaul" that and start referring to the "master DNA code" of each Cummins product as a "Bill Of Materials" instead.

The last good motor Cummins made was the N14! That motor was the Cat 1693 for Cummins. Go over a million miles and not even pull a rocker box cover. They were going broke not selling parts for them!
