Birth Ruined My Hair! | Postpartum Hair Loss, Regrowth, Confidence & What Helps ‘Telogen Effluvium’

Let's talk about post birth hair loss & what having a baby did to my hair. Telogen effluvium occurs when there is a marked increase in the number of hairs shed each day after the body experiences a 'shock' (such as birth)...in this video I talk through my feelings on losing hair, the impact to my confidence and what actually helped me with dealing with it, regrowth and more! It's EXTREMELY common after having a baby, but it can be embarrassing for women to talk about. Let me know if you experienced this in the comments and if you haven't, what's your NUMBER 1 haircare tip?

Omg! You are a simpsons fan too! Can we be simpsons sisters? PS. Dont worry everything will be normal and you are beautiful inside and out. And this worked on my mom. Coconat oil and olive oil mix. We use it for whole hair and scalp massage (3 min gently scalp massage ). Wait at least 30 minutes. After waiting time shampoo 2 times.

During pregnancy you don’t loose hair you would naturally would, that’s why it feels amazing. Then on birth you loose all the hair you would have in one go. You then on top of that have baby hair grow. It’s awful. The good news is it comes back. Takes a year. You look gorgeous x

It's a little more complicated than that. Stess can cause additional telogen effluvium so in this case you can lose a lot more than the excess growth provided

Honestly, microbangs are in, and your hair still looks really shiny and healthy. It definitely isn't as thick as in your pregnancy videos, but I think you look fantastic. If you hadn't pointed it out I honestly think I'd have just assumed it was the haircut that made it look so different!

I haven’t had a baby but since November I’ve lost around 50% of my hair density due to low ferritin levels and stress. This video has made me feel validated for feeling so down, self conscious and unpretty because of it. I genuienly cannot even count how many night I’ve spent looking at my hair in the mirror and just crying. Hair is such a big thing for a lot of people and I didn’t realise it was for me until I started losing it! The little tips on making the hair loss and regrowth process more bearable were super helpful. Hopefully someday we’ll have long, luscious locks and won’t be able to stop looking at it for more positive reasons 💇🏼‍♀️

This is happening to me at the moment, not sure if it's low ferritin but it happened to me before when ferritin was low, but lockdown also obliterated my mental health. I'm devastated about it, you can see my scalp through my hair at the back (I have dark hair and very pale skin) and I feel stuck wearing my hair pulled back to cover that section indefinitely until the shedding stops and the regrowth starts (assuming it does - I'm petrified that it won't). It's definitely validating to hear others having gone through the same.

@@franklyfrankie1203 Hey I experienced the same thing from ptsd and lost over half of my hair the last year. I used to have princess thick curly hair as a teenager so it was really hard to deal with. I know it sounds woo woo but the one thing that's been helping me the most is using the law of assumption to heal it. I listen to subliminals on youtube for hair growth. I also affirm in the mirror, while brushing and showering that my hair is firmly attached to my head, grows super long and thick. When I first started doing this, I had so much new hair growth in a few weeks. Then I stopped, got triggered by my ptsd and lost more again. So the one thing I've learned is that even if you don't believe in loa or manifesting physical changes, by you telling yourself your hair is long and thick, you are calming your nervous system down and the calmer you are the less stress hormones will be circulating through your body. The more you freak out about it, the worse it will get. I know how hard that is, how can you not when clumps of it fall out. But every time I see some fall, I just say 'That's not my hair, my hair is growing thick and long'. Also visualising your hair the way you desire it every day.

I was going to comment about hair toppers as well ☺️ Unfortunately if your hair has been falling for several years there are less chances that it will grow back (the hair follicle might be dead), however there are solutions out there. I have androgenic alopecia myself so I understand how emotional it can be. I personally use wigs but you can also look into hair toppers or hair fibbers. There’s a whole community of women on Instagram sharing their hair loss journey and being supportive. It’s an emotional journey but I promise it gets easier ♥️

Ooef, I went through this when I switched to a different birth control about 5 years ago. It was horrible! It absolutely messed with my confidence, too. Since then, my hair has come back thicker than ever, I’ve highlighted it, dyed it, chopped it all off into a pixie cut (loved it, then got bored), grew it back… Don’t worry, it’ll be back before you know it! For the record, you look friggin amaaaaazing! You’re so much more than what’s sitting on your head ❤️🤗 Also, yes please - more videos (of any kind)! 😜

Also you’ll definitely get your hair back with all those baby hairs already. Like you said, it’s just the patience for it to all catch up! * Update: I’m now 22 weeks PP and I’ve had soooo much shedding. No bald spots though. I think it helps knowing what’s caused it and that it will get better ❤️‍🩹 rewatching your video to make me feel better!

Your hair will go back to normal hun. I lost hair in exactly the same places as you and as annoying as the flyaways are, they are re-growth which is a sign that you are already on your way to having your old head of hair back. My hairdresser warned me that it would happen so it wasn’t a shock when it did but the regrow can be annoying to style!! It’s all part of having a baby . I reckon you feel better for making yourself presentable even when your home alone because of conditioning. Women have it ingrained in their psyche that their worth and value comes from their looks. Even if we do our best to overcome it, I wonder if we could ever 'put a face on' and not feel a bit more confident/empowered. As you say, doesn't matter why if it works, but having worked long and hard at accepting myself without styled hair and make-up on a daily basis, this is what I've come to believe it is. Love your videos and your honesty ❤️

Not the same situation but I had the same kind of sticky up annoying bits when a lovely hairdresser fried my hair with bleach that was way too strong and it just snapped off. You do feel really self conscious about it when it’s you I was so upset and obsessed with hiding it, but honestly looking back at pictures you really can’t even see them. I used to always have some hairspray and a soft brush to flatten them down too. Know that you know it’s there but people won’t have even noticed anything. I just wanted to say you’re looking gorgeous, your hair looks lovely and I’m sure it’ll grow back to your long hair you want in no time! ❤️

@@mellbellsringing Ah the mullet phase I remember it well! Hey it’s all part of growing up wrecking your hair then wishing you’d never touched it 🤣 I ended up having a root drag to grow mine out and then I chopped it into like the shortest bob I’ve ever had, then I didn’t touch it with bleach for 2 years cause I was traumatised haha. Take lots of pics and you’ll look back and see how quickly it’s grown back, looking back at my old pics I can’t believe everything I’ve put my hair through! Honestly though it will grow back, I even had mine balayaged a few months ago, I was so scared to bleach it cause it had grown back really long but my hairdresser is incredible and it’s in the best condition it’s ever been. Lesson learnt for me to always have your hair bleached by a qualified and sensible hairdresser haha. You’ve got this!

I had telogen effluvium around the time when I turned twenty, after suffering from a digestive issue that caused mal-absorption and Lord, those were dark times. No one can imagine how much it affects a person unless they have gone through it. It 'sounds' vain, but it really affects one's mood and self-esteem. I thought about it all the time, was paranoid people could tell, and felt really ashamed of it. Now, five years later I think my hair is back to normal, but what certainly isn't is how I feel about it. I never use to worry about my hair but now it is always at the back of my mind that that kind of thing can happen.

Regaine / minoxidil is so incredibly helpful for telogen effluvium. You do have to keep using it indefinitely but it takes no longer than brushing your teeth, especially if you have straight or wavy hair. It just becomes part of your daily routine.

telogen effluvium is pretty common post partum, especially with your body going through so much. though it usually resolves itself within a few months, minoxidil 2% is usually given to help kickstart your hair growth. it's available OTC, though be warned there will be a small shed phase in the beginning prior to your hair improving.

I'm sorry to hear! I just don't agree with this logic though. It's a bit like, if a person can't work due to some physical issue...them giving out to someone for worrying about losing their job. This video is just to show what happens to a lot of people after having babies as a lot of women don't expect it! x

I wonder though if you have a lot of babies the hair loss might not be so extreme, because your body gets more used to the pregnancy and birth process? Like even though it's hormone related I would suspect that your body can still get acclimated to the 'shock' of birth. Giving you positive vibes! 🧡🌼 I am very attached to my hair and when I went through the curly girl journey and stopped straightening my hair, my confidence dropped sooooo much. I'm feeling much better now after 3 years but I don't think it's a bad thing women are attached to their hair! 🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼

I’ve had telogen effluvium twice! Once when I was really ill and having a hard time eating and the other time was after being put under for surgery. It is absolutely stressful and I wasn’t expecting it to be as I never thought I had an attachment to to my hair… but I do lol luckily it is temporary and it’ll grow back as thick as (if not thicker) it was before!

At the beginning of the pandemic I was stressed about my relationship, my identity and of course the pandemic and I went off my birth control in order to get a blood test (since I wasn’t seeing anyone anyway), I already had fine hair before but all these things caused me to suddenly start losing my hair and it got so much thinner, no one noticed (or said anything anyway) apart from me and my mum but it was so obvious to me I felt awful and disgusting.. I was really down even though it was only myself that’s as seeing it. It’s kind of back to normal now over a year later but I still feel self-conscious about it and need to keep using all the hair regrow that serums and stay back on the pill otherwise it will very quickly start thinning again :/

I get how hard it is to have your hair look different from what you want it to be having had an experience like that myself. But, you look fantastic honestly, I love the short hair on you maybe even more than the long hair. I know it doesn't matter what I think but if it makes you feel better about your new hair 👌

I'm 22 and not pregnant but my hair has completely thinned out and I'm already beginning to loose my hairline! Probably due to stress because my other family members have very thick hair. I definitely understand how shocked you must be for it to happen so suddenly as my hair gradually became this way over a few years. Honestly I don't think my hair would ever turn back to the way it was. It doesn't bother me as much because I've grown accustomed to it. I can't imagine me with thick hair anymore. The flyaways used to bother me a lot but I manage it with oil and styling it (the Dyson airwrap is pretty good for styling thin fine hair because it is lower on the heat but still powerful). Even with oil and styling I still get some flyaways but I don't really care anymore either. I realised that having these hair issues is such a small problem to be ruining my self confidence over and that the people I love and care about don't even notice it. So it's just all in my head at the end of the day. Now I just go out with my unkempt hair and it doesn't phase me. It is quite liberating.

Between Covid hair ( not been able to get a hair cut for a year, finally getting on on Tuesday) and losing my hair post baby I have never hated my hair so much. In a ponytail or bun almost all day, hope with a hair cut I feel better. My hair is so thin to begin with i just feel like how can I loose anymore. Thanks for all the tips!

I had the exact same thing. Not from a baby but from applying a scalp treatment. It would take hair away from the root. It's best to just wait it out, it's been a few years and it's not a concern anymore. Once the short bits are long enough, they'll blend in more

I’m 10 months pp and the hair loss from birth (so far) has been so much more manageable than the hair loss I experienced at age 22 when I got off hormonal birth control. I have a video about it on my 2nd channel (beautifullybookish) At that time, I lost about 1/3 of my hair. The good news is that it eventually all grew back! That bad news is that it took about 3-4 years. I was worried about going through it all again with pregnancy and birth, but it seems like my body is handling my natural hormone fluctuations better than the artificial stuff.

For me hair is such a big deal so I totally get how hard this is for you. I think hair is a big deal for most women and becomes a huge part of your identity and how you see your beauty. Something I've realised is that whilst hair does make people beautiful, it isn't everything. For me personally it does feel like everything but I know it isn't. I've been severely anaemic due to illness and lost a fair amount of hair so I do relate. Even for my non pregnant self it took me over a year to have my hair come back its former glory and honestly it's fantastic. The only thing is now I realise I hide behind my hair as it is that thing that feels like "my thing", you know? My mum was the one who pointed it out to me. She loves my hair but she told me how much it hurt her that her otherwise confident girl was clearly treating herself "like a wig" 🤣 I think parents are so quick to not want their daughters to shrink themselves, even with the things they like about themselves! My mum lost her hair during chemo and unfortunately it never grew back as thick as it was... She's still stunning! And to be honest she also felt like her hair was her thing so she struggles with her hair even years later. So her words are ever more precious to me. You are pretty regardless of your hair so don't worry too much (I can personally relate, easier said than done) BUT...Your feelings are very valid and very common Melanie! Sending lots of love your way 💚

rosemary oil is amazing for hair growth! i had quarter sized chunks of hair falling out two years ago due to hormonal changes & being consistent about apply rosemary oil was the only thing that helped me, try adding it to the spray you’re using (though make sure you switch to glass bottle if decide to try it)

I used to have hair down to my bum and people always commented on how nice and shiny my hair was..now after my 2nd child and my alopecia I've lost so much of my hair. I have a huge bald patch on the side of my head. I'm getting close to having to wear a wig as it's getting harder to cover my many bald patches. I try to be positive but it is so hard when my hair was one of the fave things I liked about myself even through my insecurities. I'm not sure if I'll ever have my hair back as mine is now an auto immune condition. Basically if anything big happens in my life it may trigger all my hair to fall out. The hardest part is not knowing if I will gain or lose all my hair at any time. Id rather just know either way. I've had regrowth many times over the past few years but I always just more bald patches pop up elsewhere x I wish mine was just typical post partum hair loss as at least id know it would grow back! So basically I can relate but don't worry. If I'm honest, you look as pretty as you did before your hairloss and I probably would not have noticed if you didn't mention it..honestly (and genuinely still don't notice it, you still look like the same Melanie to me) xxx

Can I ask you for your thoughts on the shark cartilage ingredient in Viviscal supplements? I nearly bought them myself, but then I watched a review video about them where the woman giving the review was not comfortable with that ingredient, despite the supplements showing some hair growth improvement. I haven't made up my mind on whether that's a deal breaker for me or if I don't mind. Also, I think your baby hair fringe looks cute. xxx

When I was 14 years old I also lost half of my hair.. I was in shock and denial at first because I feel like it happened overnight. I feel like nobody took me seriously because I still ‘have a lot of hair’. It really affected my confidence because I was born with very thick, dark hair. I tried everything to get it back, supplements, products etc. But unfortunately it never grew back. I am now almost 28.. I stopped the birth control pill to find out the cause of my hair loss and long story short I have an adrenal / genetic / hormonal disorder which made my hair fall out. I also gave birth to my son 5 months ago and my hair is falling out again.. but honestly I’ve became kind of numb when it comes to these types of things, I have been through devastating changes when it comes to my appearance and have also been diagnosed with BDD, I have kind of given up on the whole ‘looking beautiful’ thing and just try to focus on how I feel instead, but I do understanding the feeling of something like this happening to you!
