Birthday Party Vlog/ Huge Announcement for Our Family

In this vlog I visit a flower farm, shop at an Amish yard sale, bake cookies, bake and ice two cakes, prep food, decorate, clean, and host my daughter's first birthday party. It was definitely a busy week. Thanks for following along. Let me know which part was your favorite!
Try these award winning sand tarts. They take a little bit of work, but nothing beats a good cup of coffee and a couple of sand tarts to go with it! The secret to their absolute amazingness is the brown butter in the icing!
Sand Tarts:
2 cups butter Crisco
4 cups sugar
6 eggs
2 tsp. salt
4 tsp. baking powder
2 tsp. vanilla
7-8 c. flour
Cream Crisco, sugar, and eggs. Add rest of ingredients and beat til well combined. Do not overwork the dough.
Brown Butter Icing Recipe
1/2 cup melted butter
4 cups 10x sugar
4 tbsp. cream
4 tbsp. hot water
3 tsp. vanilla
Heat butter on stove top til just brown and foaming.
Add rest of ingredients in stand mixer. Combine. Add food coloring as desired.
Icing will be pretty runny while warm. That's how you want it. It acts as more of a glaze.
Bake cookies @ 350`F until edges just begin to brown.
Ice cookies while still warm. If cookies are cooled too much, heat icing in microwave for a few seconds so you can still get a smooth look with the icing.

This is my favorite video so far. It's Feb. 28, 2021, as I write this, and I just started watching your videos a couple of days ago. I got so into them that I decided to start watching them in order, starting with your very first video in 2018. There is so much I LOVE about your Birthday Party video! Adorable, sort of sums it up. Why, you ask? First, Evonnie--oh my goodness. She is the definition of adorable. Also adorable was your idea to make her birthday party 'cactus themed'. I'm wondering what the connection was between succulents and a birthday party for a one year old? I'm curious--and I loved it. The idea of a 'smash cake' was new to me. The way you decorated it was fun, unique, creative, and amazing. This video took me back to Oct. 9, 1994, when my daughter, Emma, turned one year old. I too had a cake and a family party and flowers. I gave Emma a slice of her cake, and predictably it was all over the place in short order. I wish I'd known about smash cakes--was that your idea or is this a family tradition (or a Mennonite tradition?)? I loved the Big Reveal --Evonnie's little onesie with the announcement of her future role was delightful and heartwarming! I just loved the whole thing. You're probably not ever going to see this comment, since I'm commenting three years after the video was made and posted. But I hope you do. You've given Evonnie so many wonderful things that she won't be aware of until later in life. You're a wonderful and loving parent. Evonnie (and the future Fletcher) are very lucky to be your children.

Great celebration! Something came to my mind, with regards to there being less documentation of the 2nd child, maybe setting monthly reminders to take that monthly photo,at least the first year, it would be nice to have that for each child. Just a thought. My daughter is turning 2 this weekend, so my biggest tip would be routine. routine. routine. It helps them and it helps us mom's stay sane😊. God bless!

My second pregnancy went by way faster because of being busy and sometimes I feel like I don't give enough attention to either of them now. When I was pregnant with my daughter I would eat concord grapes all day long. We had grapes growing in our backyard. To this day I can't wait for concords to be in season. My daughter turns 39 this yr. Enjoy every second, time goes way too fast!!

I love concord Grapes! I lived on a little Amish Farm complete with no electricity when I was four and five. I remember picking Concord grapes and eating them right off the vine. That was a fun memory. Can you please do a tour of Lancaster county? I lived in that county. I now live in Missouri and I miss how beautiful Pennsylvania is.

I know this is an old video but what a cute announcement. I was pregnant on my son’s first birthday and we thought about telling the family since they would all be at the party. But I wanted to just have it be his day. And it worked out better that way because when we went to my first ultrasound we saw that it was twins! There was another get together the weekend we found out so we got to announce then that we were pregnant and expecting 2 babies. 🙂

I have three children and it happened to me during all of my pregnancies :) I simply forgot that I'm pregnant many times. I felt guilty about that until I read somewhere that if this happens it's actually a very good thing. Because it means that your whole body your soul everything is in harmony with the pregnancy and with the baby. The pregnancy becomes the part of you that's why your mind doesn't handle it as something extraordinary. Uh I don't know if it makes sense I hope it does :)but whatever, enjoy the whole journey and all the best for you and your little one!

So pretty. Look at all of those flowers. There are a lot of flower fields in my area in Southern AZ. I miss the rain. I'm originally from Maine. I've been all over the US, but I'm living in AZ now and if I had it my way, it would rain at least once a week. My husband and I are thinking of moving to Flagstaff or Strawberry area. What do the Amish think of your camera? lol. That high chair is the coolest ever. I'm almost exactly a year late to this video so any advice that I might have, you've probably already received from other people. My daughter turned 4 this June. 1 was so long ago. I guess, just try not to get your child hooked on too many sweets or foods that have no nutritional value. Or keep too many un-healthy snacks in the house. We do not lie to Johanna, or to anyone for that matter, so it's easier if you can honestly say, NO. I don't have any M&M's or NO. Papa ate all of the Cheetos. Rather than to deal with a tantrum.

Evonnie was sooo cute with looking (I think ) at Megan a little before she touched that cake!! So cute. Hey, we never had gender reveals.....this is a new thing and while I enjoy it sometimes, I think it's okay to not do it. Josh has a point and it's a great thing that you have learned that DH gets to make some of the monumental decisions. I did the same thing with my DH. My sisters were always wanting their way, never EVER giving their DH's the ok to make decisions like this. They ALSO would never let their DH's make plans or decisions about anything their DH wanted to without saying "You'd better ask my dad FIRST".....grrrrr….Megan, you are an amazing young woman and I love the idea that you let Josh make decisions for your family and your life too...you know, sort of 50/50... You go girl.....you might still be figuring this marriage and parenting thing out....but you have some awesome ways about you that you should really BE PROUD OF!

What a beautiful smash cake!!! If anyone else would like to use pretty flowers or greenery to decorate a cake, maybe choose the food safe ones. Green leaves I'm not sure about, but rosemary or curly parsley or any other green herbs would be a good safe alternative. Roses and pansies petals are safe to eat and look so pretty! There are flowers that look great in a vase but are actually poisonous and could cause a nasty Tummie ache if your little one eats it before you can stop them. What a fantastic way you decorated for the party, the food looked delicious too. 💗

I have parented four 1-yr-olds and I think the thing my younger babies enjoyed most was that we took the older sibling to pick out a plush pet for the new baby & the new baby always treasured that plush from the older sibling, so when the older sibling may not be so pleasant toward the baby getting attention, the baby knows the older child does really think he/she's special because of that special gift. My 2nd born, a son, bought my 3rd born, a daughter, a TY cat with his own money from the hospital gift shop. She called it her 'diddly dat' (kitty cat). Years later, he's moved out 5yrs ago, and she's here at home 16 y/o and has her worn out Diddly Dat on a shelf in her room, so it's a very nice thing for her to this day. The best days are when one is doing something to help the other like homework or folding laundry together or cleaning rooms together or making snacks or anything together, but you kind of have to orchestrate opportunity sometimes for the cooperation. It's hard with 2 teens! Esp 2 teen girls. I'm saying 'wow'. Tough. They are so much alike and nothing alike at the same time! Takes A LOT of prayer & strong parents!
