If people aren’t familiar, the Strads are played in concert literally around the world. All though they were made in Cremona, they are also in museums in other countries and played by talented musicians in orchestras and by soloists every day. It is estimated that about 650 original Stradivari instruments survive today. Besides the famous violins, they include harps, guitars, violas, and cellos.

These intruments are like any masterpiece of Michaelangelo or Davinci. They're a testament to a craft forgotten by extiction of the forms and methods of centuries of refinement.

See them, Anthony Mason, Gayle King, and Tony Dokoupil? Well, starting May 20th, they're the new co-anchors on CBS This Morning w/Gayle as main anchor, I'll be watching for sure!

Why don't they just do it in a soundproof room?

Because instruments like these violins were designed to be played in a concert hall and so if you want to preserve that sound, you need to go someplace where the instruments can truly shine.

They did a blind test with some of the worlds greatest violinists. They gave them a strat. And they gave them one the finest violins made today. Not only could they not tell the difference, they actually seemed to prefer the newer violins. 🤷‍♂️

And some people prefer chocolate to strawberry, since when is the opinion of some random social test violinists the end-all be all the violinists were not even close to the best in the world unless you’re talking about the greats like Perlman, Hahn, Vengerov, etc who were not there. Sound is completely subjective and Italian violins are so fine that they are absolutely unmatched by anything else. That’s not to say every violinist prefers Strads. Some prefer Del Gesu more which is also millions of dollars but tend to have a warmer sound. Regardless they are the best in the whole world.
Why Stradivarius Violins are so Expensive... will they reach $50 million?
