Wow what a lovely soprano. Perfect technique. Perfect phrasing. Perfect breath control. Spine chilling beautiful voice. Her geniality in using her chest voice. The big soprano voice that we so seldom hear today. Brava. Brava Brava Sondra you have a very big new fan. Love ❤ you.

I'm watching this from Texas, USA while in isolation due to the rapid spreading of covid-19. During these hard times, many have tried to devalue the importance of the arts. This encore performance brought me to tears. Thank you, Sondra Radvanovsky, for displaying your craft with such passion, and proving the arts are absolutely necessary during times of light and darkness alike!

I just came back from a performance of Roberto Devereux at SF Opera, where Sondra sang Elisabetta. To say she was incredible is an understatement. I heard her sing Norma, again in San Francisco, 4 years ago, and I was absolutely blown away already then. I have heard many a great soprano in my 35 years of going to the opera throughout the world and even though I am sure this will perhaps offend, or at the very least annoy many afficionados if I say that Radvanovsky is in contention for GOAT, my statement stands. The arguments I give in support of this statement are: 1) her incredible technique, 2) the quality of her instrument (rich deep chest voice, incredible pianissimo fil di voce high notes, amazing dynamic range), 3) her coloratura singing (not one note is missing), 4) the spinto or dramatic booming of her voice (never forced and always lyrically connected to phrasing), 5) her presence and acting, 6) her fearlessness, her striving, and the complete giving over of herself to the music and the role. You can imagine my surprise coming home from the opera, where Sondra of course got a 10 minute standing ovation at final curtain, and finding out through the internet that she has actually been singing encores of arias in other major houses - it's absolutely unheard of!!! I am in awe of what I heard and saw tonight. The vocal perfection and sound she produced was too much to bear and had many of us getting chills up and down our spines as her beautiful voice soared and sank through all these magnificent Donizetti coloratura passages. I was reduced to tears after 3 minutes into her first aria and after that I just let my heart go and simply experienced the most unimaginable sounds and feelings. She is such a great actress too - so rare in opera singers. You may think this tribute too much, but I am rarely effusive or exuberant about opera singers, except, of course, if they are above and beyond - which tonight Sondra was - though the rest of the cast was quite good, she literally lifted the level of the production all by herself. I am so happy to have heard her again and will now be tracking her career and her success in the years to come.

Just back from NY , where i saw her Tosca. IMHO one of the greatest Toscas of all time, there with Tebaldi, better then Callas, simply spectacular. I saw her in Paris in Trovatore and Ballo, ..immaculate. Her Norma in NY, was possibly not Callas level...but it was still wonderful . I don't know if she is the GOAT,..i dont actually think there is a GOAT (..maybe Shirley Verrett, but that is very very personal), but she is the greatest now and sadly by quite a margin, and she is definitely, no question nor doubt, the only soprano today that is at the same level of the greatest of the golden past. Looking forward to her Aida in NY in January. On a side note...am I the only one that would dream, want and pay to see her singing with Elina Garanca...say Don Carlo(/s), or Aida, frankly ...anything: it is a shame we have (only) two historical level lady singers..and they never seem to sing together...

viverito Let's not make this a platform for politics & please refrain from name calling. My friends.Thank you. I have been listening to this lady for the last couple of years & and artistically speaking she is a very good fine actress. I have heard her in various roles Aida, Tosca, Andrea Chenier,Norma Concert recitals etc.All on You Tube.My Opera collection is quite extensive and I have been listening to Opera since I was a young boy now that I'm 69 years old I continue to listen to new artists. I consider Opera the most beautiful greatest art form in the world as I'm sure some of you also feel that way as well my friends. It is the most demanding because of its intricate complex requirements to excel and this art form which is no easy task as you all well know. When it is sung very well and all the central/key players singers are singing very well you have a perfect storm shall we say. I have experienced this a couple of times once with Montserrat Caballe & Leontyne Price,Ileana Cotrubas.Jose Carreras.I felt very privileged at the Times when I experienced these moments it was somewhat surreal as I'm sure some of you have felt the same way before as well. There is no only one soprano that I would see today and travel within the United States to attend one of her Opera performance.That would be Saioa Hernandez.She has the entire package & and can sing all difficult roles as they should be sung.I have not heard this type of singing in 40 years.Sincerly Arnold Bourbon Amaral

I also agree here. Like many very large voiced sopranos no recording that I have ever heard does justice to her voice as it sounds in the theatre. Nilsson said the same about recordings of her voice and having heard her many times in live performances, I think that it is hard to capture true dramatic sopranos in recordings. Even Sutherland, who recorded very well due to the evenness and rounded tonal quality of her voice, sounded much larger in the theater than on any recording. I even heard Callas in her last tour when her voice was not as full and only with a piano but she was still filling the house with her sound, diminished as it was. These large dramatic voices must be heard live for their full impact.

Completely. Though i do enjoy her recordings, her voice comes across as a bit harsh and grainy, though the expressiveness is captured. In house there is a whole other layer of shimmering overtones that make for the most beautiful voice i have ever heard in my life. Sinuous and smooth and sooo dynamic. And absolutely huge! Throughout her whole range! Her high notes in particular dont sound impressive in recordings but she let loose either a D or Eb when i heard her in recital and I was absolutely pinned to the back of my seat by this enormous wall of sound.

There is only one thing I dislike about this, and it is the utter lack of chest voice. I am reminded of how Tebaldi and Callas would absolutely gutter that last "l'amor", and would drive the audience crazy! But make no mistake, she is great!

@jrosings1
@jrosings1 6 жыл бұрын
Her chest voice is actually pretty amazing, and sometimes she goes bananas and crashes down in to it, which is awesome. I’ve seen her a lot at the Met, and there are many times where, as in this clip, she very deliberately stays away from the chest. It’s particularly puzzling here, as it robs the end of the aria of any power.
@meto2854
@meto2854 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, exactly! There are instances in Roberto Devereux where she lets that chest voice rip, but here, where she needs it most for dramatic effect, she withdrew it. Strange indeed.
@michaelinmass

Interesting comment, and I agree that she chose on this night to mix that note. But all singers have off nights or or even off moments during fine performances--singers are human after all and can have a little mucus or whatever--maybe one gets carried away earlier ( in this case on the preceding high note) and has to conserve. Two other thoughts. First, Tebaldi was a real spinto and lacked the facility Sondra has on top. The comparison to Callas is more apt. They are both huge voices singing some pretty diverse rep, but Sondra has been more successful preserving her voice, although most would probably say that Callas achieved a super-human standard even though it cost her in terms of longevity. Callas was also not protected from giving too much at too young an age. I have heard Sondra say that the Met staff were very tough with her about getting a more careful technique before they let her advance.

@tristanhnl
@tristanhnl 6 жыл бұрын
I think her sounding "healthier" or "fresher" has less to do with repertoire, and simply more to do with the condition of her voice during their respective run of performances. If you go back to Sondra's Norma at the Liceu, she was *outstanding* and sounded just as fresh as she does here. I did notice Sondra's voice seemed to have a veil or dampener over it during her Met Norma performances last year. She was fighting phlegm and minor illness, and could be heard clearing her throat during Casta Diva. It is what it is....

this is great singing, but alas, the voice by itself is for my ears far from beeing beautiful.

Affreuse voix, engorgée, dans le nez, tubée et mal placée! Beaucoup de sensibilité, mais horrible! Si c'est ce type de voix qui rend le public ignare si enthousiaste, on est tombés très très bas.

Sondra Radvanovsky is THE PRIMA DIVA of our time. As was said of the late Jussi Boerling, she, too, sings with a tear in her voice, and her pianissimo is incomparable!

Yes, Jussi is the model of perfection for which others attempt to reach.

It's a real shame that there is so little recorded material available for fans to purchase who can't get to see her live. I could listen to her all day long.

It's true Sondra has not recorded many commercial studio recordings; however there are a whole lot of live recordings, both video and audio. Many of them are here on YT. You can also purchase DVDs of her live performances of Trovatore, Ballo, Norma, etc. But I agree, I can listen to Sondra all day, too. Phenomenal singer.

I dobt understand who can dislike this! I myself am a firm disciple of the singer of the golden age. However here she delivers a rendition that holds strong even when compared with the renditions of the greats like callas, tebaldi, and caballe. Something which almost no 21st singer has ever managed to achieve even in just one aria.
