I first played Baldur's Gate 2 in 2022 and it felt like finally coming out of Plato's Cave. The reason is that I grew up playing so many RPGs and believing that each one of them was innovating in their own way, improving upon each other. Then I decided to play BG2 and realized that... it was all there. It has always been there since 2000. Any form of "digital" (or virtual, or computer/console) RPG peaked with BG2 because while technology evolved insanely since 2000, the content hasn't. By now I'm sure you know I'm not talking about gameplay, I'm not even talking about story. I'm talking about the blueprint, how it was done and then replicated hundreds of times during these 24 years. It can be isometric, 3rd person, 1st person, 2D, 3D or sidescroller, 99.9% of the western RPGs are in Baldur's Gate 2. There are two ways to look at this, either BG2 was so good that it peaked an entire genre and nothing was able to reinvent it 24 years later, OR we simply lack the creativity to come up with something new.

Only partway through the video (came here from your BG1 vid), and I definitely love seeing younger gamers from the newer generations going back to these games and loving them. One thing I like to point out is that at this point in time, Bioware was still actually self-aware regarding their games, but in a good way generally. You mention two things really early on, and it's an older game at this point so not so worried about spoiler comments... - Khalid being dead at the start of 2. Bioware listened to the general feedback regarding the forced-pairing party members, and Khalid in particular. One *very* common thing we did back in the day was to accept these two into our party (druids are awesome), and then take away all of Khalid's gear and let him die. If he died in battle, Jaheira would be upset but stay with the group and carry on, as a way to split the pair up and dump a character that was (stat-wise) dead weight. Bioware saw this, and just wrote him a plot death in BG2. - Many of us also Dual-Classed Imoen into having Magic User levels, because she had the perfect stats for it. It was so common that, again, Bioware saw that and rolled with it in BG2. These are the kinds of things that make those of us who were staunch Bioware fans back in the day increasingly... let's just be nice and say Dispirited with the current state of the studio and their games.

The thing other reviewers often miss when comparing all 3 Baldurs Gate games to other games is the huge advantage these games have by being set in Forgotten Realms. First you have millions of D&D gamers being creative and a few of them being inspired to make games and write books in the setting from the 80s onwards. but then equally people being inspired by the books and games. With the advent of the internet huge communities popped up everywhere and added their own content to this world. No other Fantasy setting has more lore to access than FR. None. its not comparable. And that makes the games inevitably rich and full of interesting stories.

Fun fact about the adamantine armor... it only turns to dust in the map where you leave the underdark. And the script only checks your inventory every several seconds. So the trick is to leave the underdark and immediately drop all your adamantine gear. The script doesn't check items on the ground, only items in inventory. Then set up a train of your party members as far as you can, pause the game, and quickly transfer all the items from one member to the next. Do this until you can dump all the items at the edge of the map, gather the party, and then pick up the items and immediately leave. Congrats! You now have full sets of adamantine armor, and as long as you don't go back to the underdark exit (no reason to), it'll never go away! Oh, and Yoshiro used to be super powerful. Before one of the later updates (I think it might have been with ToB), there wasn't a limit for how many traps he could put down. The level you had difficulty killing that red dragon? No issue for me; I just spent basically a week putting traps down around him, sleeping, then repeating. The red dragon died the second he went hostile, quite hilariously. Oh, and pick up the halfling fighter/wannabe Paladin. She's voiced by Jennifer Hale.

For your evil playthrough, I strongly recommend an elf fighter/mage multi class. Its one of the strongest classes in the game. You'll only be slightly worse than a normal fighter, which is easily compensated by broken magic. If you do date viconia though; and you decide not to ascend to godhood - which as far as I know since I've looked it up, is the only way to keep the romances; which sucks b(h)alls because Gods CAN have Consorts... - then she will die in the epilogue credits, from being hunted. So it's actually better not to romance her, because I think she lives through that. Which may be how she appears in BG3... but I still say that game should've been it's own thing because the rite to ressurect bhall required the deaths of ALL the bhallspawn, and he's canonically ressurected. (Which sucks even more for Abdel...) I will at some point repurchase the beamdog disks. I did try the series, but didn't actually beat the first game I don't think. The best part about the game... the epic voice acting. It's just a shame they didn't have voices for every single piece of dialogue (they only voice the first sentence). Which lends itself to the interactions between characters. Romance Aerie, Jaheira, and Viconia.... all 3 almost gets into catfights. Viconia and Keldorn chirping at each other the entire time. Edwin trash talking everybody. Minsc is comedic at all. Even the Lilicor sword is funny to equip.

Great video. You are wrong about Yoshimo, tho. Spoilers ahead. If you travel with Nalia, it quickly becomes apparent he is a good man when they banter. Yoshimo also gave at least lip service to a Lawful Good god called Illmater, which is the god of self sacrifice and martyrdon. The Geas that was on his heart was way, way out of the ordinary, put there by one of the greatest elven mages of the forgotten realms. And most important of all... Yoshimo came all the way here from his home-land in search of a loved one, Tamoko, which was Sarevok's lover. Same one that helps him kill Gorion. It is unclear if Tamoko is his sister or lover or what else, but when Yoshimo finds out about her death he wants revenge. He joins up with Irenicus and it is kind of implied he is also the person who captures you originally. But he has a bit of a change of heart, while travelling with you. There is some cut content on his quest and dialogues that some mods add back in and even expand on with a full romance, etc, but the gist of it is... Yoshimo was a good man who, driven to revenge, fell in with Jon Irenicus. And no one who has ever dealt with Irenicus comes out of it unscathed. It bothers me that you would leave his soul to languish in hell when it costs literally nothing to have his geas removed removed in a temple and it awards you with a lot of xp...

A good man doesn't seek revenge, he seeks justice. His sister Tamoko was a murderous bitch who fell for a psychopath. A good man would have admitted that, mourned her and do what he could to make up for her sins. A good man would have asked some questions around the Sword Coast and BG about who and what the Bhaalspawn had done to help the people. A good man would have recognised the pathology and malice that drove Irenicus and Bodhi.

@@biscuitsticks3274 IWD is a much more shallow experience. No companions with personality (your party is all player-created; useful, but not as fun), and it's a much more action/combat-centric game. I never got into either. I wouldn't discourage you from giving it a shot, but just know going in that it has nowhere near the depth in story or character. And IWD2, if I recall correctly, has 3rd edition rules... 3rd edition rules standardize some things in ways I find satisfying - it was bullshit that certain races couldn't be certain classes - but overall... 3rd edition sucks ass. I think 2nd edition is a lot more fun, and its nuances offer so much more, if you know how to take advantage of its idiosyncrasies. Again, I wouldn't encourage you to not play it; by all means, expose yourself to 3rd edition rules and decide for yourself which you prefer, what you like about each ruleset. But again, just don't go into IWD, 1 or 2, thinking it'll be more BG-esque story-telling, with rich companions and an epic powered protagonist.

If you start a multiplayer game you can still play it as single player, but it allows you to create more than one character for your party. Useful if you ever want to go through the game with a fun party composition. In addition to my main character, I wanted a half-orc fighter/thief with 19 Str dual-wielding katanas for insane backstab damage. You can also modify companions to be different classes for variety. Since I already had a thief, I played Imoen as a straight wild mage (Included in the Throne of Bhaal expansion) and I changed Jaheira to a Ranger/Cleric. In future playthrough keep an eye out for the other super weapon in addition to Carsomyr. It's a katana named Celestial Fury. It only has a +3 bonus, but it stuns on hit which is broken. It also casts blind, lightning bolt and crits for 20 lightning damage. Make sure you get Edwin for your evil playthrough, he's amazing, and DO NOT miss his personal side quest.

Welcome to some of the greatest RPGs ever. I'm glad you had great responses from the community. Honestly, the community around BG1 and BG2 is some of the nicest ever I've never once seen an instance of gatekeeping from them. They want others to experience the games to the fullest and they'll offer helpful tips and background info to anyone that wants or needs it. There's so much to the games, and so many pop culture references, that you really can't experience it all at one time. You mention Silence of the Lambs which is spot on for the development team. You'll meet a man named Bub Snickt in BG1 who is a Wolverine from Xmen reference. Next up, you need an evil playthrough of the series for the fun of it and because the evil NPCs are bonkers. Edwin is by far the best mage. Baeloth was added in EE and another broken character. Vickie is weak, but the best casting Cleric. Kagain in BG1 and Korgan in BG2 are more than capable fighter archetypes. They are awesome. And you use them to kill Drizzt. That's a checklist item for DnD fans. And following that, if you want to really experience the pinnacle of Infinity Engine games and DnD storytelling you need to play Planescape Torment. It's affectionately known as "The Greatest Game I Ever Read." You don't go in for the combat or gameplay, you go in for the story. Just set your Wis 18 and Int to 16 minimum at character creation.

A handy trick for Adamantite Golems: The Innkeeper of the Copper Coronet sells a pink Throwing Axe that is a magic weapon +2. It takes ages but since those golems don't fit through most doors, you can bait them and kill them from a distance. And the smaller golems too if they are trapped behind the Adamatinte. I found that stupid pink axe insanly useful throughout the entire game. Also Jaheira has a Spell "Ironskin" (or something like that) that makes her practically immun against physical damage, like Golems. And the rest of the party gets some blunt weapons and just hit it.😊

I am not sure which is the greatest but I don’t think it’s BG2. Played it back at release. Beat it. Beat the expansion too. Tried a couple of mods. It’s great . Here’s my problems though : - it’s a theme park with rides everywhere. There is no organic feeling of the world whatsoever BG1 felt like a real world with plenty of forests and caves. - it turns into a light and sound spectacle pretty quick. Specifically it scales very badly - in Throne of Baal it becomes outright ridiculous : every weapon you find is +2 or +3 - limited choice and consequence - it’s a cornerstone of proper RPG. BG2 did develop romance , for better or for worse , but it offers Limited choices in quest resolution and close to none in the main quest. An evil playthrough is hard (your reputation will jack up the prices . You will have to deal with cops) and offers very little in content /narrative. Great RPG but nope, can’t be the greatest with that much shortcoming.

With how much time has passed, people have made some incredible content that's just as good or even better than the core game stuff; like for example, certain minor NPCs like Solaufein and Valen are made into fully voiced party members that you can recruit, and you can even bring Xan back from the first game with a ton of new dialogue and character development.

I just disagree story and gameplay isn't just what makes the game for crying out loud look at the biggest RPG ever Skyrim has probably some of the worst gameplay and story ever. But it's fun and goofy and people like it. Games shouldn't be judged based off Graphics gameplay or story they should be based off how people enjoy it. You can't say Baldur's Gate 3 didn't live up to the other balders Gate games because it's story or gameplay wasn't as good when Baldur's Gate 3 is arguably the biggest of the three games it's just simply more fun to the majority of people then Baldur's Gate 1 or 2. I'm not trying to say Baldur's Gate 3 is better than 1 or 2 I'm just tired of people like you undermining it's achievement because it's supposedly didn't hold up to 1 or 2 but it somehow is the most popular make it make sense. Anf the Golden Age of gaming I think is subjective there are plenty of games that have come out in the past 5 years that I think are way better than 90% of the games that came out during your supposed golden age of Gaming.

It was the second best story game, and best overall game, I ever played. Planescape Torment (same engine / style to a large extent) was the best story game I ever played. Glad you enjoyed BG2! I think it is the GOAT dungeon-crawler. There is a lot of stuff you skipped in BG1 if you want to start your evil character from level 1. The reputation system makes evil parties more fun (its easy in BG1/Siege of Dragonspear for a good party doing side quests to quickly become local heroes with 20 rep/OP merchant discounts/guard reactions, but an evil party collapses at that rep level, so you have to play with more thought). You get to do things like kill Drizzt Do'urden, a famous good-aligned Dark Elf ranger with some awesome loot. Your son of Bhaal powers are more predatory and combat oriented vs. good character party buffs. You get some great evil party members, like Viconia and Baeloth (the Entertainer!), who are the best cleric and spellcaster in BG1/SoD. Edwin is a very good caster too. Xzar is a bit shrill for me though. Baeloth gives Minsc competition for most beloved party member. Dorn, Kagain and Shar-Teel are all great evil warrior companions, with Dorn and Shar-Teel (need mod for her) available in Siege of Dragonspear too. Dorn also has a good revenge quest line. You can bring various neutral-aligned characters into an evil party. And you get to play some great BG1 content that you skipped--notably Durlag's Tower, but also battling sirens along the coast south of Candlekeep, doing missions in the village up the river from Baldur's Gate. Buying great stuff from the smith and Thalantyr the mage in/zone to the left of Beregost. Fighting for fun and loot various assassin teams sent to kill you. Doing some pretty fun side quests involving things like finding a lost dog, saving Thalantyr's wayward apprentice Mellecamp and taking on the world's fastest dart thrower and collecting some very rewarding bounties. And there are tons of good quests in Baldur's Gate city.

Thanks for the "heart". If you do BG1 again, here is some further advice. Pick up all the various permanent stat-buffing tomes you can, especially the three +1 wisdom tomes for Viconia. There is also one +1 strength tome, which you can use on a warrior (for example, if you do play the shadowknight you discussed), start him at 17 strength to conserve points for all the other stats a shadownight needs, then using the strength tome will permanently boost him from 17 straight through to 18/++, so gaining potentially 4 or 5 strength levels from one tome. There is also one each of dexterity tome (in a Baldurs Gate trash can of all places), constitution tome (gotta get that one from the sirens I mentioned) and a charisma tome (in Xvart/carrion crawler cave at the foot of the gnoll fortress. All these tome buffs last throughout BG1/Siege of Dragonspear/BG2/Throne of Bhaal for any character you use the tomes on.

I recently tried Boosteroid since my PC can’t run Baldur’s Gate III, and I was impressed. It’s a great solution for anyone with an older system-played smoothly without any lag or issues. Definitely a cool option!

I knew something was up when yo usaid "30 hours". I remembered this game being a 40 to 60 hours adventure, PLUS the expansion which is like 20 or 30 more hours. It is such a good game!

Thank you for posting your play through, it brought me back. BG1 was great but BG2 blew my mind. When my addiction to BG3 tones down a bit I decided I want to do a BG3 play through again.

Bg1 and 2 are great still amazing. Especially with the brilliant mods that expand on plots, companions, story and UI/QoL mods that make the game feel less old. If you're the least into RPGs, they're a must play, along with Dragon Age Origins and Mass Effect (back when Bioware wasn't just EA "content").
