The swinging 70s. San Francisco. Bisexuality. Need I say more? Well I will, I guess. In the video.
cfgvvvvvvvvvv That was my cat. Anyway this video is about bi activists Maggi Rubenstein and David Lourea, co-founders of The Bisexual Center in San Francisco and their contributions to the very bi world we live in today!

Gotta love a bisexual talking about bi history with primary sources. I'm tired of those vague "bisexuals were transphobic,, once" that people like to throw around. This also reminds me I need to do some more reading on bi history, reading Bi Any Other Name and a few issues of Anything That Moves is just the tip of the iceberg for me

@@calicoathena nah, it leaves us alone, it's a micro label that describes more spespficly who they are, compared to bi which is more general. there's a place for both labels, stop letting petty maters concern you and focus on real problems us bisexuals face, I've had as many pan friends as I've had bi freinds, and not one of them has ever insisted that I'm using the wrong label, in fact they were completely supportive of me while I was discovering my own sexuality, without them I'd probably think I was still hetero, this division in the multisexual communities only makes our abilaty to make changes to biphobia weaker, if we're hurting each other then the people who hate us can do that largely unopposed.
@cornblaster7003
@cornblaster7003 Жыл бұрын
@@calicoathena pan means all genders, bi can mean multiple genders, pan it more specific and fits under the umbrella term of bi, basically not all bi people have the experience pan people have, but all pan people have the experience that bi people can have, this is the same as something like omni, which generally means essentially bi with a preference, this however doesn't mean all bi with a preference people are omni, it just means that some people want to specify their experience more than just the general term of bi these kinds of microlabels are not new to the community, for example think of things like demi boys, generally trans/nonbinary people who fit into either category comfortably but feel the need to show in their label their particular experience, this doesn't erase those other labels, it only exists along side them, if pan people were the problem you think they were then I'd be on your side, but they're not, they just find comfort in a different word than you and that's ok

To acknowledge history is not only important for remembrance, but through understanding contexts it is also heavily therapeutic to me. Thank you so much for your work, Verity! :,) One of my best decisions this year was definitely to follow your patreon. Since I watched one of your videos for the first time, (I think it was "Beyond Nonbinary", if I remember correctly) I joined a gender- & sexual orientation- education group in the city I live in and it has done wonders for my mental health (and hopefully does something good in the places we educate, too). It is year 2024, Maggi is still very much alive. I'm the hair stylist at the assisted living facility that she lives at. I was lucky enough to have been able to cut her hair for her just over a year ago. I had a feeling there was a depth to her that she wasn't letting on. I found out today by a son of another resident that lives there that Maggi has quite the history! That is how I ended up on this channel. I, myself, am a daughter of a bisexual dad who passed away in 2002 from AIDS. I held his hand during his passing moment. It changed my life and how I view the LBGTQ community. ❤ Cheers

Thank you for honoring San Francisco this way! SF is where I was born and raised an activist, artist, and hard worker. It's a place where I can be myself in all my intersectional complexity and work in solidarity. The City, and folks like Rubenstein and Lourea, defy status quo and influence culture in ways we don't always see until generations later, and as its diversity and avant garde spirit gets displaced by wealth and homogeneity, stories like this help us remember where we come from *and* where we can still go! 🙌🏾 Sankofa/Gratitude 🙌🏾 And thank you for being an antidote to erasure!

Your videos are so fascinating and positive! They absolutely helped me to figure myself out and to start, tentatively, shyly, to identify as bisexual. I am much more used to identifying with polyamory, so if you did a video on ethical non-monogamy I would not only love to learn more about the points of connection between my identities, but also share it with my polycule and in our meet-up group. It seems to me that the percentage of bisexuals, especially bisexual men, is much higher in poly circles than in "general" - or perhaps they just feel safe to be out? Love your work, looking forward to whatever you choose to do next! Greetings from Germany!

I think if I was 14 again and hadn't heard that "bisexuality is transphobic" I probably would've identified as bisexual. And I know what you're thinking, "but you can just identify now as one!" I've identified as pansexual for 10+ years, I do gravitate towards bisexual groups, forums, subreddits, etc. but I like pansexual, I like how it fits me, and I'm fine with it, maybe one day I'll call myself bisexual and I welcome that day, but right now pansexual is okay with me. I love bisexual folks, and I'm so mad that I believed in the idea that bisexuality is transphobic, but I hope that I do everything in my power to continue to change my view of things and do everything about educating people on bisexual things.

I'm grateful that when I was told "bisexual should only be used if you mean to exclude everyone who isn't cismale or cisfemale" I was able to find enough people explaining that was a ridiculous interpretation, and while I was welcome to identify as pansexual, bisexual did not actually convey a dislike, or disintrest in people with alternative gender/sex configurations. I still write bi/pan for profiles to make myself very clear. I like the colours of the bi flag better.
@sadfaery

When I was coming of age as a young bi+ person, "pansexual" wasn't even really being used yet, so bisexual was the most natural fit, and as someone else pointed out, just objectively speaking, the bi flag colors ARE better together than the pan flag colors are. Functionally, my bisexuality is no different from pansexuality, so I never felt a need to change my label when "pansexual" entered our sexual orientation vocabulary more ubiquitously. I just add a "+" onto "bi" when I talk about my own sexual orientation now or say "bi+/pan". My bisexuality has never been transphobic. On the contrary, the bi+ community where I came of age was very trans-inclusive. It never even occurred to us not to be. After all, we were attracted to people of any gender, and we were attracted to people regardless of gender. And these were our friends and people we considered to be part of our chosen family. We all experienced very similar forms of discrimination, and we knew that we were stronger together than apart. The first time I heard people talk about bisexuality as being transphobic, I was shocked. So I'm really glad to see that our bi+ forbears were trans-inclusive as well.

I've found that biphobia and transphobia frequently go hand in hand, because they both tend to exist in that gender-bendy not-easily-defined space that makes people with easily defined genders and sexualities uncomfortable. I don't know why bisexuals get accused of transphobia. Of all the letters in the queer alphabet that might have an issue with transgenderedness, I feel like we're the least likely because the nature of someone's bits just isn't as much of a factor for us? I'm sure there are transphobic bisexuals, but I've never really run into it. Also, thank you for covering bisexual history. I frequently feel like I don't really belong in the queer community, and it's nice to learn about my own history.

Interesting, but you left out the part where many, many men who had been dishonorably discharged for homosexual activity during WWII in Japan, the Korean War and even Vietnam, often disembarked in San Francisco. Since the dishonorable discharge = social disgrace and no chance to get a job because it's on your military record, many men simply decided to stay in San Francisco where they formed their own families, business and community.

Its interesting here about US Bi history, have you looked at UK & Dutch Bi history? About BiCon, EuroBiCon & International BiCon. And their cross-over with US based Bi Activism. About the flowering of the world wide LGBT community from London in the mid nineties & how that relates to the UK bi community & bicon. The early support for the BDSM community in the Bi community especially at BiCon's, the founding of SMBi's & there substantial support for the Count Down on Spanner campaign, the 1st openly Bent/BDSM political action group. There is huge overlap between various people in the Bi, transgender & BDSM & Lesbian communities By Trans(gender) I mean the original inclusive "people who challenge 'traditional' gender asumptions" definition not the authoritarian & religious right wing media & academia hijacking/colonialisation of our words claiming that only transexual could be transgender, then that only stereotypical gender expression could be transgender, then only heterosexual... then only post surgery... then only If your intrested in any of this, I know a bunch of the primary sources on a lot of this & I am myself a medical historian.

Okay so, I’ve been watching your videos for a minute now and I don’t think I’ve ever commented. I just want to say, thank you SO MUCH for bringing us lgbtq+ content with a focus on bisexuality. There isn’t much out there at this point and your stuff is top notch! Thanks again!!

Thank you so much for this video and the work you put into it, ESPECIALLY the archival work. Like wow. Also, idk if you've heard of it, but I think you'd really like "A History of Bisexuality" by Angelides and "Identity without Selfhood: Simone de Beauvoir and Bisexuality" by Mariam Fraser! Also "From Psychoanalytic Bisexuality to Bisexual Psychoanalysis: Desiring in the Real" by Esther Rapoport. I can't DM you on Twitter but if I can email you all the bi sources I've found that you might make use of for video essays I'd be happy to send! Seriously thanks!

As others have said. The video was very moving. It made me cry. But also, it made me a bit melancholy. I grew up in San Francisco. My parents were bohemian artists in an interacial relationship. I graduated high school in 1990 in the middle of the queer revolution in San Francisco. But...the San Francisco I grew up doesn't exist anymore. It has priced out its working class and that makes me very sad.

Thank you for the video, Verity! It was very inspirational! It is amazing how bisexual activism has come a long way since 1970s, and how much harder would be to come out today as bisexuals without the work of our predecessors. And we should never take that for granted! As a cis ally, I believe we are reaching another turning point in queer history: we need to fight now together in order to secure the rights and the acceptance of our trans sisters, trans brothers and trans enbies. That is the only way of we to move forward as a civilization.

Your videos on bisexuality make me feel so seen. I don't identify as bi - I just call myself queer but bi is probably the closest I don't know anymore. Anyway your content is so intrinsically _queer_ and well researched and funny. Very good, much enjoyment

I’ve literally been looking for the history of the bisexual community in SF in the 60s and 70s. I knew of David L, but had not read of Maggie! Really cool to know.

This video was fantastic and very moving. Thank you for making this, I feel so much more connected to my identity now learning about its history in America. I wonder if there's any info for how Bi communities started in the UK, and other nations? Finally, on the off chance she may see this - thank you Maggie, and thank you also to all who worked at the amazing Bi Centre!!
