i liked Sasha's makeover :( what i took from it is that going around with unguided/misguided hatred toward the unfair treatment of women, represented in Sasha's mind by Barbie, is not productive when aimed at the wrong thing; Barbie herself didn't create the patriarchy or unhealthy body ideals or even barbie dolls i thought the makeover matched her change of perspective on these type of issues after getting to know Barbie better, and the realization that these are bigger problems than just barbie dolls or individual "bad" women, and that she can still hold feminist ideals while while lowering the intensity a bit and realize that Barbie was an unfair target to unload her anger into i saw a lot of my younger self in Sasha and all it's taken for me to understand how to become a better person and feminists but i guess I'm just dumb and i didn't get the movie :(

Oh my god i fucking hated barbie and princess diaries because of this. Also think the miss honey spectrum applies to legally blonde too, I'll never understand why people praise that movie so much.

As a bi-man, part of me wonders if its Jealousy. With straight men you only have to worry about them checking out other girls, but with Bi-men, you have to worry about everyone including their guy friends and that's too much for some people despite the probability of most guy friends being straight/not into them like that. Its the "Guys can't be friends with girls" problem doubled to "Bi-guys can't be friends with guys or girls"

26:19 I remember the only time I’ve been to Harry Potter at Universal (they had only just started working on the 2nd half) and looking at the price of the robes and the material. Even at the time over $100 for polyester. Even at the time I thought id rather sew my own out of much better material

"He's crossing orcs with goblin men" from Two Towers, implies that Saruman was encouraging Orcs, the descendants of the aforementioned corrupted elves, to make babies with the bestial human men from the hills around Isengard (and while I don't remember tusked, tribal humans being part of Tolkien's narrative, there are a few descriptions of humans that were not Rohirrim and somehow "lower" than the "middle men" of Middle Earth. This is where we, in the D&D community got the concept of "half-orcs" which is what the Uruk-hai were called somewhat depricatingly. Tolkien, of course, carried his own cultural and ethnic baggage which got written into Middle-Earth, but literally making the Orcs "mud people" was a big issue for me in Jackson's movies.

I have to say that I was a bit shocked about the amount of shops in the UK on my trip this October that sold HP themed merch - I have been to the UK many times and this time it seemed that the number of shops more than doubled! And if you imagine the mark up on merch, it has to be quite profitable 😅

Ooh ooh i remembered the example I just remembered!! Elphaba and Glinda in Wicked!!! Not in the same narrative, exactly, but Fiyero's "you've been... Galinda-fied" to Elphaba evokes the same thing after she goes through the 'Popular' makeover, and she meets the middle by losing the glasses/braid while retaining her personality and embracing the black clothing. Meanwhile Glinda is still Pretty, but goes from being the flouncy bimbo archetype to holding herself more 'elegantly', pinning her hair back, and picking up Elphaba's book at the end and promising to study it and learn from it (iirc). Then they sing about how they've been "changed for good" by meeting each other holy shit

firstly fuck jk for being a horrible racist transphobic freak secondly i feel like i got disenfranchised with harry potter long before i realized jk wanted me dead, because i just saw so much merch??? and it was all overpriced?? it just felt like the magic of the books had been crushed undrr the weight of all their merch. glad that kinda took me out of it so i was far less crushed by the jk stuff later, tbh.

Hm. Have you ever thought of adopting a more benign, thoughtful and reflected perspective yourself? You just might be a little more understanding of other people instead of just being toxic-sour, entitled and better-than-thou... For example, you could try to think within historical contexts. There is more than the absolute dual categories of "this" or "that" in the world, you know?

Can you please explain to me: Why is it so important that characters are played by someone from a social group as close as possible to that character? I really don't know. I always thought that "acting" means to put yourself into the imagined skin and mindset of someone else. You may obtain this information by research, imagination, work, an open mind, respect and a load of empathy. Yes, it is possible for non-jews to play jews, for non-murderers to play murderers and for humans to play aliens. If I was an actor, I would play anything I thought I was capable of, because I see myself as a human who is as neutral as possible, be it necessary neither as a female, a male or any other member of any possible group. I just don't care about gender, it doesn't really exist for me. For me, there are billions of individuals out there. Some are cool, some are assholes - so what? Everyone should play everyone, as long as it is done well. At least this is how I see it. But I would be honestly interested in your opinion.

barbie bothered me from the get in no small part because of what you say about the presentation of femininity & feminism in the central female cast, yet it was praised as this ultimate girls' movie so i'm very relieved to hear someone finally acknowledge that it wasn't a holy grail of feminism just because the characters liked pink and disliked sexism. i personally felt uncomfortable and excluded from its version of sisterhood, but also for all its critiques of capitalism and sexism, most felt in that same "showing but not following" vein as the makeover, exaggerated with buzzwords to show empowerment, stripped of any and all nuance, systemic nature, and intersectionality to present a singular idealized female identity, neatly tied up in a # girlpower bow
