The women were at the cross precisely becos it wasn't dangerous for them to stand around at the cross - since Jesus was assumed a criminal, it was his male apostles that were going to be targeted. That makes Apostle John standing at the cross the bravest of the brave compared to the Virgin and Mary Magdalene!
