The king has one more move and then the king dies and you are defeated. Also, the king can only move so many spots. It would be obvious to most people that the king would have one more move before the game being over. Most chess players will just concede the defeat at this point. The king making one more move, is pointless. Terrible application.

The actual story involves Paul Morphy. It took place in a private home in Richmond just prior to the Civil War. At the time, Morphy was acclaimed as the best player in the world. Most of the story is right.
