Being a freshman in college is different than being an upperclassman. A lot of people still have high school mentalities as freshmen. By sophomore year all that pettiness/bullying has pretty much died out. College will mature a person and you’re introduced to so many people from so many different places with so many different styles. He will be ok.

For the HBCU kid, he's been in school for a week and met 4 people, give it time. His tribe is definitely there. You can be bullied no matter where you go, whether at an HBCU or a regular school.
@douse892 жыл бұрын
Exactly. I was gonna say it’s not an HBCU thing, that’s just a school behavior period.
@selalewis91892 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I was going to say the exact same thing! I went to an HBCU, two as a matter of fact. I first learned about tentacle porn at an HBCU. There are all kinds of people at colleges and universities, and HBCUs are no different. Hopefully he'll graduate, mature, and delete this first semester video.

I hate that he got bullied, but I’ve been a “weirdo black girl” my whole life and college is when I was delivered from that kind of treatment. Maybe this guy isn’t truly tapped in to Black culture enough to know the difference in how people express themselves in a safe place. I still think lots of people play too much and make me the butt of jokes when I’m not okay with it… but I also know some of these same folks wouldn’t do it around non-Black folks. Florida Invitational Step Show has been hosted at the University of Florida for YEARS. You can definitely do black cultural things at PWIs. Just because people choose to go to a PWI doesn't mean they don't want to experience culture. Leave those young ladies alone and let them have their college experience.

I attended a PWI; was on the Black Cultural Center gospel choir, was the Black Student Government president, was one of the Big 8 (way back then) Conference BSG delegates, co-founded the Minority Student Coalition in the dormitories, and pledged DST at a PWI. I had a whole black experience while simultaneously having a PWI experience. Found my tribe and we built what was missing.

I can't speak on the HBCU POV, but I can say that when I was younger I'd often get picked on by other black kids for being: nerdy, reading books, being shy (social anxiety), making good grades, not dressing like everyone else, "sounding like a whyite person", Queer, and listening to other music besides rap/hip hop and R&B. I can, however, say that my experience in college and now as adult in my early-mid twenties is much, much more positive than the years prior. I've met other awesome, nerdy black people that share the same interests as me, so I don't feel isolated or outcasted from the black community/culture anymore. I think it all depends on the area you attend school(s) to notice a huge shift in the mindsets of others. I still get teased for how I talk or having a diverse taste in music preferences from time-to-time, but for the most part I've noticed a lot of progression and acceptance in our culture and community within the last 5 years (in my opinion, don't come for me). I still think we need more work with accepting the LGBTQ+ community within the black community, especially when it comes to men, but again, that's just my opinion; don't come for me. Black Queer Men & Black Nerds Exist and are Valid.

As a former RA at a PWI, you can definitely get bullied. It is harder to do in college, but it happens. It is also easier to avoid people you don't want to deal with unless they live with/near you in a residence hall. Also, let's talk about how people love placing heavy homophobia on Black people way too much. My alma mater was rated as the most homophobic school this year (lower than some of the Amerca's religious schools). The young brother at the HBCU has to find his squad. I went to a majority Black hs and I flourished because I ignored the people that thought they could clown me for not being whatever enough. Just do you.

I attended an HBCU for Undergrad and Grad and didnt hear of Dragon Ball Z until I got to college. It wasnt my thing but there were fans of the genre. There were at least 4 gaming tournaments going on in 1 dorm alone. Gaming was basically an intramural sport. This was early 2000s and for the time, there was a community, and sub community, for many individuals outside of what is considered "the norm". Many people's college experiences are based on the individual. Its unfortunate for this young man and I wish/hope he has a better experience now and in the future

Things might seem all fine and dandy from the outside but Kev's examples are all successful youtubers etc. Not the standard kid at school. I remember when I went to a heavily black school I thought nobody liked anime etc but then a few months before I left I found people who were into it but they clearly hid it from everyone. They only showed me their interests once they knew I was "safe" and wasnt gonna shit on them like everyone else. And these were popular kids but they felt the need to hide it

Let’s be real, black people still suffer severely from shunning what they don’t view as “black” behavior. It’s actually sad because it reflects a community of people who limit themselves which, ultimately, prevents growth long-term not only in self but, in generations you contribute to. We shouldn’t have to find the niche group to feel accepted. I’ve been in this category all of my life since most things considered “black”, in the US south, never appealed to me. As a youth, I was fortunate enough to live in multiple countries and amongst multiple cultures which gave me a broad canvas to build my sense of Being from. Unfortunately, that didn’t put me in alignment with the black community. Getting bullied in college isn’t hard as you share rooms in dorms. It takes nothing but a snicker or sarcastic comment, time and again. Remember, these are still children (18 doesn’t mentally make you an adult) usually coming from households where they’ve never truly been taught how to deal with the world.
