In regards to Gon, it's less stupidity and more pride born from a lack of self worth, remember how he had a breakdown after what Hisoka did to him in the Hunter Exam? Gon feels very insecure about receiving victories that he doesn't feel like he earned, as we also see in the fight with Hanzo, and for the most part he's been unable to win any battle on his own, so this is his chance to prove that he actually can do it.

There are two theories as to why they are referred to as boys. One is that they are both born male, but Alluka is transgender and identifies as a girl and Killua is the only one that acknowledges that. The other less common theory is that some characters in HxH have titles (i.e prince vs princess) that differ from their gender such as in the current arc in the manga. So "brother"/"son" might be similar to "prince" as a title when referring to Alluka who may have been born female while Kalluto was still born male.
