The 83rd element in the periodic table, Bismuth has a much better reputation than the element before it, Lead. As a matter of fact, Bismuth has taken the place of Lead where Lead's toxicity has become an issue. You've probably see the beautiful colorful iridescent "hopper crystals", but you may be unfamiliar with the fact that you may have voluntarily taken a form of Bismuth internally to help with gastronomical issues. Check out the video to find out!

Bismuth is one of my favorite elements, both for its beauty and lack of toxicity, but you have a bunch of uses here I didn't know about. Bismuth and antimony used to be alloyed with lead for type metal because of the expansion on solidification you mentioned.

When showing the sizes of the elements, a cross-section in log base 10 barns and has peculiar graph that I didn't expect. It was a interesting talking point for one of my assignments. (just a suggestion) Very cool video to first stumble across, definitely will need to watch the rest.

Thanks, but I think I may be showing a few too many graphs already. The subject of cross-section may be a bit beyond my presentations, but who knows? Maybe when I get to the nuclear fuels it might be worth a mention??? Thanks for the suggestion! Ron

Thanks for teaching me something new! I was amazed to see Boron at the top of the hardness rankings. And some research confirms it belongs up there, but above it should be C (in the diamond allotrope, of course), with more than twice the Vickers hardness.

I thought it was only fair to use the more common allotrope for Carbon... But you are correct! Ron

May I suggest you discuss the magnetic properties of each element. I didn't catch you mentioning Bismuth's intriguing diamagnetism, so strong you can push peptobismol tablets around with a hardware store magnet

Good suggestion, but I think we're past the elements with magnetic properties. But I'll keep my eye out! Ron

@@ronhipschman Well O2 is strongly paramagnetic, and there's an allotrope of C that is strongly diamagnetic. And that's just two!

It is fascinating that element 83 is not toxic considering how close it is to elements 82 and 84.

Although bismuth is considered less-toxic than many elements, it can still have effects if exposure is high enough, so it's not entirely NON-toxic from what I've read. Ron

I'll take the Bismuth/Tin alloy for soldering then. Notice that I pronounce the "L" sound....

Are you saying that packing lead bricks might not seem a good idea either? It would be fun (and a bit cruel) to watch the baggage handlers from a window seat... Ron

I find it hard to believe that bismuth is in the same group of the periodic table as the gas that makes up nearly 80% of earth’s atmosphere known as nitrogen, flammable phosphorus and toxic arsenic known as the pnictogens! Comparing bismuth to antimony however doesn’t seem too weird to me.

Hello, I wonder if you could help me. About 31 years ago, when I was about 7 years old, I found buried in my garden a small metal grill. It was dirty, but it didn't have any kind of corrosion, it was silvery, it was a little grayish but also a little shiny. When I put it in a bonfire it burned producing green fire, it burned completely, it disappeared. I wonder if it was toxic. Do you know what kind of metal it was? Thank you!

Interesting question, but difficult to answer without knowing more. Copper salts give flames a green color as does Boron, but I doubt that was what you had. We really need to do some spectroscopy or other chamical analysis on it, which I assume is impossible now. What an interesting experience! Ron

@@juandediosreyes8526 Zinc can burn green, as well as some elements that I really hope it wasn't (barium, thallium, antimony). Zinc or copper seems the most likely but I'm guessing.
