Breath taking, aren't they. In fact, these creatures are the best "stars" of Dances With Wolves. The buffalo hunt is stupendous...especially knowing none of them were injured just for a film. And their arc in this film reminded us of the total use of the animal for a people's survival...never sport or avarice.

Bison on the road....especially in August..just sit there, no flashing lights, no honking horns, don't get too close..let them go by. It's their home..their road..you're on it. During "rut" the bulls are irritable, aggressive, and looking for a fight. Tensions are high. (If in a rental car..get the insurance) If the bull and his female come by..be nice, or he may ram your car seeing it as a threat to his mate. To see the bulls can get pretty nasty, and often a car is just "in the way" and will get damaged. (anything from grill, bumper, to side mirror, or a big dent)

You were at the right spot at the right time! We have been in one of those stampedes in the Black Hills. I forgot to turn on the camera because we were so concerned that we were going to get run over! It was a very narrow road with woods on both sides. To this day I have no idea how we came out without a dent!

Ha! I actually turned around from nerves because the bison were gathered up at the east end of the narrows and in a mood, but I misjudged the dozens more I would encounter reversing direction. The worst is when the one ton bulls swing their massive heads at your car and their eyes focus on drivers, presumably sizing us up. Whew. Unscathed.

Their hooves sound so dainty on the tarmac. Just doesn't seen possible they belong to such huge, lumbering beasts. I would love to see on moving by my car - moving, not stopping.

The American Bison has to the most intimidating and toughest wild cattle. Even more than the larger Gaur and the African Buffalo.

I always go in mid August. Bison and Elk in rut...lots of action. ( if getting a rental car...take out the insurance, things can get wild )

I remember one morning my family and I waking up at a wood cabin and my mom who usually got up first wanted to open the window to see outside and next I hear a scream in my room and her panicking as a buffalo is looking in the same window back at her with just metal bar frame and wood stopping it…

stuck with this herd in a canyon with clueless tourists. complete panick all around, one tourist lost his mind and floored in in reverse 65 mph in a twisty canyon with 600 foot drop off. Mommo and ba ba were on the cliff next to my sports car, don't worry girls, herd mentality.

Breeding season was active at the time of the video, and it is quite amazing to watch the normally quiet grazing herds become aggressive and consumed with ritual competitions. I'm glad you visited the park. I hope you enjoyed it.
