Bison Headbutts Car in Yellowstone National Park

We went to Yellowstone this summer and I just happened to record this, figured I would share it.
Edit: Since the "hit 'em" comment seems to have people so fluffed up, allow me to elaborate. I thought the other car coming towards the bison was being disrespectful and not giving the animal the space it deserved. Because the bison was already agitated, I thought it would serve them right to get butted like the previous car did. Petty, perhaps, but I dislike people that think they're more important than what is going on around them. Plus this was IN THE PARK, so just slow down, take your time, and enjoy the sights.
I would NEVER want an animal to get harmed, but if someone is being cocky I am not above watching to see if karma deals out some cosmetic damage to their vehicle.

I hitchhiked out west from the northeast usa late 1970s. At yellowstone stayed for awhile. got a job in the kitchen at the Old Faithful Inn . Free room and board, management hiring transients and hitch hikers like myself late august because seasonal and college workers were leaving (if memory serves, prior to covid, Yellowstone N. Park completely shuts down late september, early october ) . One day walk outside down the stairs and there's this huge bison just laying there munching on the grass, like it didn't have a care in the world. It was only about 6 ft from me. One evening a couple of us got in a car, drove to town of West Yellowstone, Montana for some night life. driving there at sunset , beautiful big herd of Bison in a meadow . coming back at night , driver slammed on his breaks . huge bison standing there sideways took up both lanes of the road/highway . he said if he didn't see the reflection off the bison's eye(can't remember if its head was turned or not so it might have been just the side of one of bison's eyes) we would have been roadkill inside the car and perhaps the bison we might of hit, outside . we waited for it to move, might have honked horn a few times, can't remember . seemed to take forever, finally it moved off the road and safely we got back to Old Faithful Inn dormitory for kitchen workers, room cleaners and motel staff - seperate smaller building from the O.F. Inn, can't remember for sure .

The rangers would tell you not to back up traffic and just drive around. Otherwise, you could spend hours following at 5mph while other cars pass you and the bison. If a ranger comes by he/she will just use their vehicle to drive the bison off the road! Certainly don't blame these folks for not wanting to pass though! Not after what happened!

I was in South Dakota once, and we stopped to take a picture of something, I forget what it was exactly, it was like a mountain or something. I crossed the whole Yellowstone park on a motorcycle in 1990, and even back then their was posters everywhere saying to not get close to themes ! That they were weighing around 2800 pounds, and theses are truly 4X4 and wile sitting on my bike waiting because they’re were crossing the roads everywhere, the biggest one of the bunch charged me , the cars who were near me ran into the ditches to get out of the way, and the only thing I had the time to do is…….yelled like a mad man because I thought I was dead, and he stopped abruptly at 2 feet of me, slowly walked in front of me wile always starring at me, he was so close that with his right front paw he tip the front wheel on my bike nearly having me to fall on the side…. He nearly brushed it !!!…. No doubts in my minds if I didn’t yelled to disturb him enough to stop and think to himself ‘’ what the fuck this dummy is doing there ? ‘’ I would be guaranteed dead if he would have rammed me on the bike, don’t mess with those beast, they are still wilds and way more quicker and faster that you think a thing that big could be, stop being dumb and get out of your cars to take pictures, it’s not some puppy dogs.

I got stuck on my motorcycle in Custer park in south Dakota, in a whole herd was crossing the road. Came over a hill a"bang" 100+ bison passing through the road. Every car stooped and I am stuck going down hill(motor cycles have no reverse gear, and it no breeze to push 800 lbs up hill backwards). At first I tried to go around the stopped cars, as soon as I did an small baby bison ran out in front of me. I immediately stopped just missing it. The mother was not very happy, and made a straight charge at me, I had no where to move, so I figured I was about to take a head on shot to my bike, but she stopped about a foot in front of me and moved off. The big male's we're about 6 feet to my left, and they where not happy, they where grunting, but lucky for me they moved ahead. I couldn't help but notice that there was a similarity in the sound coming from my tail pipes and the deep grunt of the bison. Anyhow I looked much larger than just a human being standing there, being that my bike was about 6 ft or so long and me sitting on it, probably made them a little more hesitant (being I didn't move when the female charged me, not because I was brave or something, I just had no other option.). Either way a female bison is big, a male is four legs of bulky flesh and anyone who walks up to one, will get what's coming to them.

It happens, but it's rare. On the other hand, if you don't go around you could spend several hours following at 5mph, while other cars pass you and the bison. Most of the time you can go around safely. If traffic gets backed up behind you the rangers would tell you to go around slowly. If a ranger arrives on the scene he/she will turn on lights and siren to drive the bison off the road. Best bet is to wait until the animal's "business end" is facing away and then get by. Pretty scary though, especially after watching what happened to the car in front!! BTW, video quality is fine!! Most people are watching on their phone anyway!

Robyn Banegas Humans have a right to be there too providing they don't harm the bison. Which is exactly what happened here without incident with all three vehicles involved, with the 1st car slowly and respectfully trying to go around the bison. Perhaps not the wisest move, but not the crime of the century either. And all the bison did in true territorial fashion is to give the occupants of the car a reminder of his prowess. No harm done, so stop with all that anti people crap. It's so damn whiny and boring.

cquilty1 um ok??? If you think my opinion is sooooo boring why waste your time commenting? And just because humans have a right to be there doesn’t change the fact that it’s the animal’s territory and should be respected. Oh but I’m just being “whiny.” Is that what you say to everyone who has a different opinion?

@@robynbanegas1752 My comment took about 90 seconds to type and post. 2nd time now, "the animal’s territory" was not disrespected. It was a road people were driving through to get where they need to go, and a large bull bison was encountered that got a little touchy. Aside from a dent/scratch in a car no humans or bison were hurt, violated or traumatized. End of story. 2nd time now, stop with all that anti people crap. It's so damn whiny and boring. You sound like a teenage girl filled with misguided idealism!!

cquilty1 you keep using words like “whiny” and “boring” but you keep commenting, so obviously I’m not as boring as you say 🤷‍♀️🤣. This must be entertaining for you. I’m just stating my opinion, that doesn’t make me “whiny.” If you don’t agree, fine. State your opinion and move on. That’s what adults do. But you keep putting me down just because I don’t agree with you. What makes your opinion more important? Is it because you’re a man? Ooooooo, I guess this “teenage girl” should just be quiet and not have an opinion 🤣 Ha!!!! You crack me up. You’re so ridiculous. Have a nice day, sir.

This is so relatable. In one day I've seen people speeding, blowing through stop signs and approaching a herd of bison. People have zero respect and I'm guessing the car tried pushing their way past the bison because they can not slow down and appreciate. Thanks for the laughs.
