My thought about the fence being within 25 feet of your barn is that, mayby you can work pit a plan to have a smaller trailer, like a 1 horse trailer, where you can shelter a calf if it BAS to be seperated from the heard for health reasons, or in a case whwre the calving cow has died, may allow you to move the calf to their natural distress call can be distanced from a heard while still providing some shelter for that calf. Just an "Educated Guess" from a subscriber with no 1st hand experience. I appriciate the content you (and others in your circle of family & friends) are providing here, Noah. No need to reply, Noah, but would appriciate a quick like just to let me know you saw my comment. Prayers are with you, my friend.

Bison, not buffalo, is the correct name. Buffalo are found across the ocean. I was surprised to learn that Buffalo horns and coats look different, too. The song Home On the Range and the Hollywood westerns got it wrong! I think we Americans have learned to use the names interchangeably.

A few years ago, we were fishing the Yellowstone, on an island. There was a huge group of bison on the far side of the braid that formed the island. THE bull ended up across from me, making bison noises and occasionally stomping the ground. I pretty much ignored them other than marvel at their size and beauty. I never felt threatened and as long as I fished the other side and didn’t stare at them or try to get closer i felt safe. Late in the afternoon all of them gathered at the river , around 200, and swam across about 30 yards upstream from where my friend was fishing. One of the best pictures I’ve ever taken. Maybe I wasn’t as safe as I thought.

1983 ish, friend had small cattle ranch, mostly Herefords for breeding, Sire was a purchased Penn State farming program bull. He also got Holstein steers from local dairies to raise and sell, or contract raise for a friend. One spring, we have the Hereford mothers and the 14 or so calves in "calf" pasture, we would also bring up the animals we were getting ready to send out "finishing". Well this one Holstein steer, now about a yr old, had his horns and one curved in front of his left eye, so we named him "Hook", He was "pasture protector" and one time, down in other pasture, had watched him hurdle an electric fence like a White Tail deer...no joke. Well my friend and I are out in middle of this 6 acre pasture, at least 150 feet to nearest fence, ear tagging the spring's Hereford calves, we get to last calf, the runt....Bill grabs it, it screams...."OH SH*T !!!!!!" here comes Hook at full charge, head down, my mind only pictured the red lights from an ambulance, thought was at least going to get gored, good chance killed...Bill starts screaming, I jump up waving arms, yelling....Hook stops about 25 feet away, head down, pawing at the ground with his hoof, YES, they do that.....I very slowly start backing towards fence, Bill still kinda sitting on ground with Calf, and remember, we had raised hook from time he was only weeks old, this almost a yr later....so I make to fence, go into garage, get Axe Handle (I was a 240 lb farm boy, pretty powerful) climb back into pasture walk right up to hook and place the head of the axe handle gently rt between his horns and start pushing him backwards...thankfully, he backed up with some resistance, but he backed up, I was ready to crack him with, didn't want to, but was ready to swing the handle with every bit of my 240lbs...hopefully stunning long enough to get away safely, thankfully didn't have too....but really thought either Bill or myself were going to get seriously hurt when Hook was charging that day...after Bill tagged the last calf, this about 1 in afternoon, we went in the house, cracked open a cpl beers, broke out the bottle of Jack Daniels, did a cpl shots and smoked a joint....EVEN BEFORE THIS, NEVER TRUSTED THAT ANIMAL...His Hereford bull, gentlest, sweetest, best socialized bull ever and think it truly had a sense of humor, he liked to play, but gently, never once did ever scare or surprise me in a bad way

30 years ago a friend of mine had buffalo (he never called them bison). They were much larger and really mean. By larger, I mean 5+ feet to the wither. Does this mean that the industry has cross-bred them down in size and that means that they are really beefalo? Are we seeing all over the USA a crossbreed of an original?
@BrokenArrowBison3 жыл бұрын
That’s really cool! No, all mine are calves. Some of them like my bull isn’t even a year old yet. He will not mature for another five or six years. Yes a full grown bull can get to 6 foot at the shoulders. As far as them being mean there are a lot of factors that play into that. Some of it can be genetic, other factors can be if they saw humans or not when they were little and still other factors could be handling practices.

@@Trumpisthevillageidiot Thanks for your reply but I was talking specifically about cattle bulls. I grew up around cattle and based my comment not only on personal experience but also on some research I did one time. Statistics are a generality based on a number of events but cannot predict an individual behavior. This is just like cancer survival statistics. We do not know which person will be in the survivor group among 100 people with the same stage and grade of tumor. I have found dairy bulls particularly dangerous. Animal behaviorists say that young bulls should be kept with other members of the herd whether other bull calves or cows, Not all pit bulls are dangerous but they are responsible for half the dog bite fatalities in the US. Statistics are just what they are. My grandfather was nearly killed by a Short Horn bull who had been so docile that my dad and uncles sat on his back. I am sometimes amused by a statistic that says I am more likely to be killed by a cow or dog than a shark. Yes this is true only because we are exposed far more to dogs or cows than sharks. I don’t fear salt water crocs because I am not in their habitat.

Don't discount the fact that these animals, unlike domestic cattle, can coexist with apex predators which are imperative to maintaining the health of open pastures, water sources, and woodlands.

Absolutely! They are very much a part of our ecosystem!

Noah, My dad wants to know what is the smallest joule size electric fence charger for bison? The maximum size too? I know Greg Judy uses a 60 joule charger for his cattle.
@BrokenArrowBison3 жыл бұрын
What Gallagher recommends is a minimum of a five for bison. My guess is Greg Judy is saying a minimum of a six not 60. There really isn’t a maximum. I think the biggest charger that Gallagher makes is a 10 or 15 and that would be a good charger for bison. It’s not really about the joules for controlling animals as it is about the volts. Joules are what is going to keep the charger running in tall weeds. Think about it this way, joules are torque and volts are the house power. 😁

Do u never want to get goats or sheep?
@BrokenArrowBison3 жыл бұрын
I thought about getting goats but they can carry a disease that sometimes bison are susceptible to. I need to do a little bit more research before I end up getting any.

Is bison the same as a buffalo
@BrokenArrowBison3 жыл бұрын
Their technical name is bison but the term bison and buffalo are interchangeable.

How about training one. Like roping it and taming it down. How would you go about that?
@BrokenArrowBison3 жыл бұрын
I don’t know. I think you could tame it to a point but I’m not sure it would ever be trusted.

WHAT (IF ANY)...ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN BUFFALO AND BISON??? AND WHAT'S RUT??? THANKS! FOR SHARING😊
@BrokenArrowBison3 жыл бұрын
Hi Lisa! Technically buffalo are water buffalo in Africa but the settlers called bison buffalo and the name stuck. So now bison are either called buffalo or bison but the same animal. Cows breed any time of the year, but bison like dear go through what is called a rut and it is the breeding season, typically July and August. Thanks for the great questions!

Why are the bison deformed as calves, as we do with the farm animals in n.z.
@BrokenArrowBison3 жыл бұрын
Do you mean dehorned? If so they have horns even as calves, just small.
