How To Raise BISON

I've grown up in the suburbs, and never really had experience with cattle, let alone bison. However I've been seriously considering starting a homestead of sorts once I'm able to move out, and want to be able to live more self sufficiently. Now, I'm starting to consider starting a buson ranch as well, both due to my love of bison, nature and conservation, as well as the financial and nutritional stability it could provide long term. I've certainly got to get some more general livestock experience beforehand, but I could totally see myself in the future as a bison rancher in Colorado or Wyoming. Don't know why I'm researching this now, a bison ranch is still probably 10-15 years into my future if that, but I'm glad there are resources like this video to help introduce people to raising bison nonetheless

Hello. I’m proud to say that I was raised on a bison farm in Kentucky. I have a million stories. I wanted to say thank you for keeping the dream alive. I’m sure you know, but for any one reader who doesn’t. Tail goes up before a charge. They can run up to 40 mph. A big stick can act as horns and if yours is bigger you have control. The can leap up to 7feet from stand still. They can flip a pickup like a toy. And males have been known to flip their calf over and over again after they are born. Separate the calf and its mom for a few weeks to prevent its death. Asian donkeys make great companions ( because they take no shit) and bison do get bored. Have cowboys on speedial. You may be responsible for damage caused by your animals. Good luck guys. Let me know if you ever need a farm hand. 😅

They are still beautiful no matter their age. What year do they start making babies the cows and bulls. I wish I had the land to raise these animals. But now I'm to old to even start but I love watching you raise them and your friend you gave the female Calf his name I can't remember. Even though I watch him daily I'm bad at names but good at faces. I really enjoy your clips. I wish you all the luck that God can send you.

Excellent video! Recently 4 good size parcels of land came up for sale near us and I told my husband, "forget my job, let's raise bison!". With a half serious laugh he said why not? Too bad he wasn't serious enough because I was. I think they are gorgeous! I live in Iowa, but grew up in Colorado, with the Buffalo Bill/Genessee heard about 30 miles west of me. Just to catch a glimpse of them when we were heading to the "hills" made my stomach flutter and my heart skip a beat. Over the last 20 years that I have lived in Iowa, I have seen rich beautiful crop land be sold off for housing developments. I would much rather see these majestic beauties out my car window then a new batch of houses anyday. One day I will fulfill this dream. My controls geeky husband better watch out for his half serious laugh!!!!

I believe this would be good partly for the size of the herd and DNA. Although from what I understand DNA isn't as important as other animals due to how many where slaughtered before we started conservation efforts. Paul St Louis

Yeah I wouldn’t be as concerned about the DNA personally when you’re first getting started. I guess it depends upon what direction you want to take your ranch though. Just tell the quality and animals is really what you’re looking for.

What is the size of a family unit one bull for how many cows and youngs, as the herd grows ? Are the yearling bulls chased from the herd when becoming adult ? This animal seems fascinating, in fact tame but wild in his heart. 🐂

I appreciate that. It’s about 15 to 1 with multiple males in about 30 to 1 with the males isolated with just females. Obviously it can change and it depends upon the health of the animal too. But that’s a good rule of thumb. Yeah definitely the older males have dominance over the younger ones and they do try to chase them off but doesn’t always happen.

It's similar to the social organization of the African Buffalo which is a matriarchal society with all the females and youngs, the adult males stay around, composed of large isolated solitary bulls and groups of male bachelors. Either sex charge depending on the situation and the distance.

Are there certain grasses or other plants you can add to their pastures to add Minerals to the soil. Do you think it 's better to have Biodiversity in the grasses they eat? I've been following a small sheep farm in Ireland and she practices Regenerative framing . I realize that Bison aren't sheep, but I was curious if they shared some of the same nutritional needs.

I definitely think there is value in Biodiversity. That I know of I don’t know there are any grasses that will add minerals you really have to do that just by adding minerals yourself. I’m sure they do share a lot of the same fundamentals nutritional needs. But I don’t really know whole lot about sheep.

15 to 1 with multiple bulls and 30 to 1 with an individual bull. There obviously is more factors to it like health and genetics but that’s a good rule of thumb.

I don’t have a bison veterinarian in my state either. Dr. Parsons is in a state south of me but he will travel. I’m sure you could find a veterinarian that would travel. I know Dr. Parsons travels long distances. Personally I would probably recommend staying away from the national parks immediately if you are a beginner. If you are getting calves that are six months old it might be OK but in a general sense they are usually a little bit more wild due to not having as much human interaction.

do you know the feed to meat conversion ratio....beef is 10 lbs grass or 13 lbs grain to lb of beef....lamb is 4-5 lbs of grass or 6-8 lbs of grain to lb of meat....goat is 3-4 lbs of graas or 5- lbs of grain to lb of meat.....what of water needed for each lb...chicken is like 3 lbs to a lb .....beef 10-13:1 .....pork 6-8:1......lamb 6:1...gaot 5:1 .....atlantic salmon 4:1............chickens 3:1............cricekts are only 1.7:1 and over 10 x less land and 2000 times less water then beef....bison might be 8 lbs of grass...maybe 8-10 lbs grain......beef require like 15000 liters of water per kg of beef
