I was living in Japan during the Pride heyday. Epic! I think for sure at that time, at least heavyweights, Pride was stronger than UFC. Another thing that people forget is that after his Royce Gracie fight, Sakuraba fought again on the same day against one of the top heavyweights Igor Vovchanchyn as it was a tournament, nearly submitted him as well, but eventually had to retire due to exhaustion...

It’s not even an opinion thing really. The Pride roster was far better than the UFCs at that time, particularly at HW and LHW where they would not have been competitive.

I started watching mma somewhere around 2002, 2003. Things like Sakuraba vs the Gracies, Shogun's 2004 Pride GP performance, Fedor ruling the heavyweight division with an iron fist for years and years, Wanderlei and his staredowns, the Pride Shockwave type events with match ups across all different rulesets and weightclasses, soccer kick highlights, the Japanese fighters and fans and their Bushido spirit, guys like the diet butcher and Akira Shoji, Hammer House vs Chute Boxe, etc etc etc... There were so many incredible moments during that promotions lifetime.. Absolutely mandatory viewing for every mma fan!!!
@RichardRohlin2 жыл бұрын
Wish there had been a little more about Fedor in this video. In my book, he's the greatest fighter to never fight in the UFC, and one of the greatest heavyweights of all time. Since UFC now owns all of that old Pride stuff, I'd like to see more UFC commentators acknowledging Fedor's contribution to the sport. Pride never die.
