Some assorted points: ------- This video was a response to many people’s comments that went like this: “Hey Bisqwit, what do you think about TempleOS?” or “Hey Bisqwit, what do you think about Terry Davis, the author of TempleOS?” Many people think this video is about TempleOS. That is a misconception. This video is about Bisqwit’s thoughts about TempleOS. As in, what I think about it _right now._ I took this subject at the exact same level of investment as if you asked “what do you think about Afghanistan.” I would not travel to Afghanistan and study local culture and circumstances there, in order to answer your question. Instead, I would pull from my existing knowledge and perhaps do some quick refreshing from Internet articles. And that’s what I did here. I _have_ been following news on TempleOS since it was still called LoseThos. Sorry, that I was not able to go through more in-depth details of the system in this video. To me, the more abstract ideas like freedom to program is more important. I don’t know anything about the programming language in this system, but it looks like C for the most part, except that it can be executed linewise on a commandline. Whether it has some fascinating language features I don’t know; but they have never been touted in any material I have seen, so I don’t think it is particularly interesting compared to C. ------- Timewise, I spent four minutes providing an objective overview to people who don’t know what this is about, and three minutes explaining how I view it. About half of the overview was about the operating system and another half was about its author. Because the operating system is pretty much a culmination of (the more orderly parts of) Terry’s mind, i.e. it is not a result of community efforts, analysis of TempleOS was also analysis of Terry and analysis of Terry was also analysis of TempleOS. ------- At 5:28 I said _“Anyone who entertains the idea of genuine revelation in his case, is either ignorant, or maliciously predisposed against supernatural beliefs.”_ It was _not_ a mistake. A person who is *maliciously* predisposed against supernatural beliefs is the sort of person who thinks that all supernatural is BS and that all supernatural deserves to be ridiculed. They do not believe actual genuine revelation exists. According to them, whatever Terry had, should be considered at the exact same validity as revelations that Christians do accept as genuine. They would push Terry’s ideas to that same esteem, insisting that there should be no different treatment. Either you accept that Christian revelations are BS, or you accept that Terry’s “revelations” are as genuine as the Christian revelations. This also serves the double purpose of mocking all “authentic” revelations, by putting them on same level as figments of schizophrenia. You can substitute Christian with any religion in this comment. You can similarly also replace Terry, in this comment. I have seen atheists argue that if one is to accept Biblical scriptures as true revelations from God, they have no right to dismiss Hindu revelations or e.g. Muhammad’s revelations as similarly true revelations from God. And this is the point that I addressed at 4:53. (Note that I am not saying all atheists are malicious. I am saying that people who behave in certain manner _are_ likely to have malicious intentions.) Note that it was not a coincidence that I put that trollish anti-atheist meme picture on screen at the same time when I spoke of people who engage in smearing of believers. There was a deliberate connection between these two things. It is _not_ to be interpreted as a representation of all atheists. ------- Some people seem to have gotten the impression that I avoided TempleOS because of some spiritual reasons or such, that he received visions from maybe some other more sinister source. I am not making that claim at all. I am honestly saying that I do not want to touch TempleOS, and I explained why. I did try to frame my words as positively as possible, while still stating clearly enough how I feel and what I think. Please respect my right to that decision. As for purely religious perspective, I do think Mr. Davis was genuine about God, which is evident from the pride and importance at which he took on the task of portraying the events in the wilderness after Egypt, which is admittedly a very important part of the Bible. I am almost positive that he made it to the good side of judgment. I so much wish he could have been healed of his illness during his lifetime, but things don’t often go that way. As for the vision and covenant thing that he claimed, that was mostly his own attempt at justifying what he already wanted to do. He wanted an OS that works on x86_64 and has the lowest common denominator hardware requirements. First he used rational arguments to justify this decision, and later on, he made up a higher order. Either it happened by a conscious lie, or, more likely, his illness was mixing things up. Whether he actually believed what he said about covenant and God’s word, remains impossible to know. His frequent use of racial epithets and other such language pulls into question the degree at which he actually wanted to follow God’s Kingdom, and whether there were spiritual factors involved, but from the outside it is impossible to tell. I don’t know enough of how schizophrenia works, so I will speak nothing rather than speak false accusations. I don’t want to trample such delicate matters. ------- However, there is a second reason why I steer away. Let me make this clear: I love TempleOS for its technical and philosophical merits. However, TempleOS (unintentionally) makes a caricature out of Biblical beliefs. As a public figure of some barely nonzero influence, I do not like to lend credence to this caricature out of concern, that my support for TempleOS would tarnish the public’s perception of Biblical beliefs - taint by association, for people who are not able or not willing to tell the difference, which I fear is most of the target audience of both TempleOS and my videos. ------- Even though I have no personal interest in studying TempleOS further, I would think it would be a terrible injustice if Terry’s project and fruits of his labor were to disappear from the Internet. It is _art_ after all, and it is better that his life had purpose and consequence than that it had none. I recommend you to check it out if you can, and even perhaps tinker with it. It’s free for all purposes, so, please, go here: templeos.org/ -------

Terry A. Davis is a very sad story. I'm glad he could find peace. Not saying i think his suicide was a good thing but this man was suffering. There is one video where he is yelling at his parents in a dulusinal way and all the sudden he stops and says "I forgot i love you" and walks away. He would have fights with his father because of his racism (Which the internet did not help). People would call and torment this guy they would say something to get his delusions going then he would be on the phone doing 2-3 hour long rants.The worst thing about Terry Davis is you can see his decent into madness. From start to beginning before he went really off the wall to the point where he is homeless and up to a couple days before his death. Internet trolls played a big part in this guy getting into physical fights with his father not seeking the treatment he so desperately needed, catfished him into believing he was into a relationship with this girl he admired, and even fed into his delusions. Terry Davis is a sad story that shows the true evil in people when hidden behind a keyboard. If people wouldn't tell him he was right and make crank calls (That Terry in his state of mind had no idea they were trolls and took the calls as legitimate) The people who helped Terry Davis get kicked out of his home and beat him down every time he made progress in treating his schizophrenia should feel real good about pushing this man to what he ultimately did. TempleOS is really cool in that it does things differently and has a number of unique features. It's fun to play with from a hobbyist's standpoint. I was really looking forward to this video. Alas, I'm disappointed. You spent more of this video covering the religious philosophy of the system and the metal state of the author than covering the OS itself, which is pretty much what everyone else does, too. It is interesting to note that TOS was originally known as LoseThos and was Terry's passion project. He wanted to make an operating system that was made exclusively for recreational programming reminiscent of the 8 bit era of computing. LoseThos lacked a lot of biblical references. I believe he turned to God right as his condition was worsening in order to cope with the terrible side effects like paranoia and mental voices. He then decided to dedicate LoseThos to God. I firmly believe he did not make the OS as a joke or insult to the Christian God but instead as a means to stay focused on something while suffering. The project and God gave me relief and faith.

Is our belief and our inability to grasp the objective that makes our human reality real. We don't live in objective reality we live in a blend of objective and subjective or human reality. The objective will always be out of reach. Our reality is way beyond our ability to grasp it even with the most advanced scientific tools our minds are just too limited. Mutually contradictory truth statements cannot be simultaneously true. Christian scriptures say Jesus died on the cross and was resurrected. Islamic scriptures say Jesus never died on the cross. @@Bisqwit Did Terry make a mutually contradictory claim? He said god spoke to him, which - theoretically - could be true right? All the prophets could have spoken to god. The fact that one did, does not exclude the possibility of another having done so? Or is it something else Terry said that makes his comments mutually exclusive?
@Bisqwit5 жыл бұрын
Exploring the whole Biblical theology (which Terry was a proponent of) goes _way_ outside the scope of KZbin comments. You asked me why accept A but not B, and I provided a logical answer to show a trivial example of why you just cannot blanket accept _all_ revelation as truth. In practice, things are much more nuanced. You have to analyze things in the big picture. Does it fit in the overall style of existing revelation, or does it go somewhere entirely different? You have to know the material to answer this. It’s the same as if you tried to judge whether an email actually originates from its apparent sender. (Barring tell-tale signs in the Received headers,) There is no _logical_ way of proving it. You have to know the author, to be able to judge that something seems off. Same goes with scriptures. Truth is, even Israel, the nation from which the entire Bible originates, does not have a track record of correctly identifying prophets. From what I have read, the usual thing was that nearly _all_ prophets were treated as false prophets, and persecuted and sometimes killed. Until something very specific that they prophesied turns out actually happening. Oops. Guess they were a real prophet after all. Welp. Time to start taking steps to preserve this scroll. This is the criteria that prophets in Bible have had to go through.

There are forks of TempleOS which have basic networking abilities. There is Discord application (a very basic one) for it as well. Andy Anderson He did. To be fair, almost any computer engineer can develop a TempleOS-like system given enough time (Terry took almost 10 years to build the system). People generally don’t do it because it’s a useless OS and people often spend their time doing useful things. The entire OS has “only” 150k lines and 10 years is more than enough time to write this amount of code.

5:11 I like how you respected muslims with not putting any image representing muhammad. For the people asking why, in islam drawing pictures or making sculptures of prophets or god is forbidden
@Bisqwit4 жыл бұрын
Thank you. You are correct in that I respect muslims. However, I very much do not respect their most obvious false prophet in the history. My wish is that every muslim in the world gets freed of this deception they are trapped in. I see them as victims of a dreadful deception. I could have put that Charlie Hebdo picture there, but an otherwise completely serious passage in the video was not the right time or place for ridicule. Instead, I put "pbuh" (peace be upon him) in blurry scraggly letters to lampshade the concept of “one of these is not like the others”. In retrospect, I probably should have put there "saw" instead (may Allah’s prayers be upon him), but maybe I opted otherwise because of possible confusion. And it’s not like the hadiths do not contain _numerous_ descriptions of Muhammad, such as the whiteness of his face, whiteness of his thigh, whiteness of his armpits, and so on… I see you may be Turkish. I recommend you this channel by a Turkish ex-Muslim: kzbin.infovideos?disable_polymer=1
@l3monguy4 жыл бұрын
@@Bisqwit First, yes I'm Turkish. Yes, there are depictions about him, they say he had very dark long hair that is reaching to his shoulders, dark big eyes, shape of his foot and hands... But still, in Quran it says any image or sculpture representing any of the propthets (Quran accepts Jesus and most other religion's prophets such as David or Mosa, as a prophet too, but in a different way for sure) and God is forbidden, and should be destroyed or burned. Also, I'm not a muslim. I'm an atheist, most people would just search prophet Muhammad on Google and put a random picture they found, but you didn't, any muslim watching this would be grateful. If this comment doesn't make sense, sorry my English is unfortunately isn't that good :/
@Bisqwit4 жыл бұрын
The Hadiths also indirectly say that any image or sculpture representing _any_ living thing - not just prophets - should be destroyed. Sahih Bukhari 3225 ”I heard Allah’s Messenger saying, the angels do not enter a house wherein there is a dog or any images of living creatures (a human being or animal etc).” So pious Muslims should destroy their computers if it happens to play this video, because this video certainly does depict people :-) Well, if you are an atheist, you might still find Ridvan’s (Apostate Prophet) channel interesting; he is currently an atheist too.

Bisqwit, I'm unclear as to why your reaction to TempleOS is so severe. You said that everything that is written today in terms of revelation is to be tested by scripture. It is so, or at least, I believe that as well. But there is a prevalent leap in logic that I would like to resist. It looks like this: person a claims some kind of revelation. Revelation turns out to be untrue or broadly doesn't fit with scripture. Therefore, person a is horrible (at least in some specific spiritual way), and nothing they do is worth consideration. The thing is, Terry was a very confused guy. Mental illness is horrible, and I'm painfully familiar with it. In once sense, Terry misrepresented his own esoteric internal dialogue as a mission from heaven, but in another sense, he launched towards the moon and merely made a suborbital trajectory. But it is still a suborbital trajectory (if you get my analogy). I think TempleOS is amazing purely because it's *entire* purpose is catechistic (sorry if I'm not using that word right, I'm very low-church) -- to teach people religious truths, or at least the Terry A. Davis understanding of it. I would LOVE to see a functional, well-written langauge/OS/app centered around Christianity on github/gitlabs/whatever. I don't mean just a bible app or a devotional app or a prayer times app or an advent calendar app. I mean an app that does something useful in an ordinary setting, which has religious truths weaved into its very structure. I think that is a fantastic, amazing idea. Was TempleOS a successful execution of said idea? Not really. Sadly, Terry and his work were not well known, except perhaps as a byword. While I've never booted up TempleOS, and I loathe the memification of Terry (let the man rest in peace!!), I think TempleOS is something that could stir up positive motion and thought. I don't mean that people will learn much biblical truth from it, but the intent was fascinating, and I'd like to see it repeated. I would like to honor Terry -- not specifically as a programmer/engineer, but as someone who had a very lofty idea (create a spiritual operating system that works well and isn't terribly campy), and actually followed through with it, despite the torment of schizophrenia. Blessings.

I hope Terry Davis didn't have to experiment some form of heavy trauma when he was young. If he did, and if the trauma was caused by an unnatural (human) cause, it would make me more angry than sad.
@RamLaska5 жыл бұрын
Ian Swart Thanks! The issue is kind of close to me. I have dealt with relatively severe mental health issues (not as severe as poor Terry), but I have also had friends where their mental health issues *confused* their spirituality. The genuine faith got twisted up with the mental illness, and the result was a mish-mash of spiritual experiences, conspiracy theories, and paranoia. I have one friend from Kansas City who’s currently homeless in Redding, CA (the last time I heard from him.) In better days, I saw him at church conferences, visited his home, spent time with his kids. I’m not sure what mental health issues he has, but I noticed that his conspiracy narratives got more and more far out over the years. He was always a far out kind of guy - he had a rough past and had been powerfully redeemed. He didn’t speak in the usual churchy way, but there was a genuineness I could see in him, because I was able through my own life experiences to peer past the “weirdness,” which others were not able to do, sadly, which caused him to experience some painful rejections. In the past decade my conversations with him got increasingly odd. He would go from waxing poetic about Jesus and the Kingdom of Heaven to talking about aliens - it was very jarring. But anyways, the idea I want to get across is that we shouldn’t treat TempleOS as a meme, or a shrine, nor as some kind of dangerous thing. Peering into mental illness isn’t easy, and seeing the *mixture* of the spiritual and the carnal in peoples lives is more than many can take - they run screaming for the comfort of cold, black and white categorizations and systematized thought and belief. Human beings are freaking messy. We didn’t get any cleaner when we learned not to dribble food down our chin as a toddler, the mess just got internalized somewhat ;) I didn’t know Terry very well, and I haven’t watched much of his videos. They’re painful, even for me. I am not prepared to judge his motivations and his successes, nor to sift his wheat from his chaff. I’m not qualified, and I never will be, not in this age. But I have this inkling in my mind that behind the oddness and bravado of “the worlds greatest programmer” was something pure: Love for God, and perhaps for man as well. I don’t know how much of that got past the filter of his mental illness and possible trauma. But I know it was there. Rest well, Terry. *What you failed to do was far more impressive than all of our successes.*

I have to say that I largely don't believe in religions largely because the holy texts or what have you behind them are frequently full of things so nonsensical and improbable that if it were a work of fiction the author would likely be embarrassed by it. I have no particular problem with the idea of God or gods, but what most religions present as 'truth' seems so absurd... Well, the scientific notion of 'extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence' would seem to apply. Plus, as a scientist, there are too many things that outright contradict known science in such texts, which makes it even harder to just accept them as 'truth'. I guess it's a mindset thing. Faith, insofar as being able to accept things as true with no real way to verify them even in theory, doesn't sit well with me... Now, I try to respect religious beliefs where possible, but it's hard to truly respect things that seem nonsensical to you. Or rather, it's hard to really respect things that get put up on a pedestal as important yet to you seem to be on the same level of 'truth' as the average work of fiction. I don't know if I'm making it clear what I'm getting at, but respecting the beliefs of others when you yourself don't find such beliefs plausible is a nice idea, but it seems as if it doesn't really work in practice, because how can you really respect something that you think is silly? Trying to do so is somewhat contradictory and a bit... uhh... Fake? Yeah. Not sure how else to put it...

Thank you. I maybe overthink things too much, and I recognize that it disappoints some people that I did not go into deep technical study of this project, but I did try to stay as objective and respectful as possible, without compromising where I stand. That’s why e.g. I avoided mentioning the _name_ of the programming language as long as possible (until 2:24). These were intentional decisions. And the only reason, why I analyzed his visions / revelations at all, was because people know that I am a believer, so they _expect_ some kind of commentary on the subject to see where I stand. The question “what do you think about Terry Davis” is as much about my position as it is about Terry.

I know this is a two year old video, but I'd just like to say that as a Muslim I completely understand you and I commend your honesty. It's hard to come across someone who really understands religion in the tech sphere. For anyone who isn't religious (and I don't use that term to mean spiritual), you've got to understand that it's never been tougher to express someone's religious beliefs. There's always someone who thinks they're smart and wants to disprove your "dumb religion." I'm assuming Bisqwit has dealt with that, it's not an unlikely assumption, and so he made a short and comprehensive response. I'm personally very glad that he did, and I'm glad to know there's at least one person on KZbin specializing in STEM and isn't pretending that somehow science replaced religion. Hi, thank you for this video ^^ First of all: I have to strongly disagree with your statement that Terry was not exceptionally talented. Many well-known OS developers and also ex-workers from big tech companies titled his work as 'comparable to building a skyscraper from scratch, completely alone'. Not just did he program a new programming language, he also based an entire OS on it, without any help. Just to get an idea of what he had stemmed: Even the old systems as MSDOS involved hundreds of people for development, conception, design and documentation. He did it all alone, and developed by the way a whole new way of structuring an OS. It's absolutely unique and impressive what he did. Second of all: I got confused about your personal opinion. I'm not a native speaker, so maybe I got you wrong here and there, but I first understood you in a way that you honesty admire the project and his passion. I really enjoyed your perspective on this, especially your point about any religious revelation having to align with scripture. Your videos are as interesting and entertaining as they are educational, please keep it up!

I feel sad for Terry. He should've been given proper treatment. Instead his dad and sister threw him out of their house, making him homeless in his last few days.

What would you think about debating with youtube atheists live on your other channel?
@Bisqwit5 жыл бұрын
I am very slow at phrasing my thoughts concisely and exactly. That is why most of my posts and comment replies on KZbin indicate “edited”. Thus, regardless of topic, I would not do very well in live debates, even if I spoke English perfectly fluently.

@@Bisqwit That's often the issue with live debates... communication skills are out of scope of meritorical discussions, yet required to prove your point. Anyway, I hope you will try to take part in the atheist/theist discussion in some form or another - I'd love to see someone of your eloquence take a stance on one of the more prominent atheist arguments. Not only will it broaden your viewers' horizons, but yours as well in the process. Looking forward to your future content, Bisqwit.

@@Bisqwit as a person who is an agnostic atheist, and who was once militantly against anyone who believed in religion of any kind, I'd say you have no reason to debate atheists anyway because most of them do default to some pretty intellectually dishonest tactics, just as Christians will do the same. I can only speak for myself, but I think that nobody has the right answers, and that humans, the creations of humans, and the writings of humans can never properly represent a God's will, if a God does exist. There has been nothing said or left by a God to truly communicate that. With that premise in mind, I came to realize and believe that there is ultimately nothing wrong with believing in a God, even if I can not bring myself to believe in one. I personally believe that most atheists' anger is misdirected at the mis-deeds of organized religion. The hierarchy of organized religion is run by humans, therefore the perceptions and actions of these religions is all human. I hate organized religion. I believe it has a manipulative agenda to subvert its believers into doing seriously messed up things to other people. People kill each other in the name of organized religion every day, and that is where my own beef is. Consequently, if there was no organized religion, and nobody forced anyone to believe, would it be wrong to believe in a God? I don't think so. You are a believer, you believe in a specific set of Abrahamic religious texts, and if that is the conclusion you have come to, and it brings you the most comfort and purpose in your life... then you should. Life is all about the quality of our emotions, and it's not my right or any other agnostic atheist's right to try to take that away from anyone. Pascal's Wager is an idea that I'm a fan of. It raises a very simple answer to the question of believing in Christianity, but it makes no difference to me in this life to believe or not, I think; humanity has obfuscated the idea for me so much that I think there's no point in even thinking about it, as weird as that might sound to you. I came to be a non-believer just as easily as you came to be a believer, and that's okay. The only difference is, I quit feeling animosity towards Christians over time because everyone's just trying to live life their own way. If Life and the Afterlife are a cruel joke to be played on the idea of me having free will, and if I'm wrong, I hope that God isn't as petty as Christians, Jews, and Muslims make him out to be. I'm already very lucky to be alive, and this life is sacred on its own. And to get in the middle of that fight is a losing battle for everyone. 😄 I'm a fan of what you do, having loosely looked at your stuff since TASvideos, and I am glad to see you're happy and doing what you do. I just wanted to say that, and maybe hopefully give you some peace that not all atheists suck, just as I learned that not all Christians suck. Keep being you. :)
