The reason the song sounds Reggae is because it was written and originally sung by Bob Marley and was influential in the UK which has a big Reggae / Ska following. Eric Clapton introduced it into the US.

In reggae the bass and the drums really drives the beat and melody of the song where the guitar keeps the underlying rhythm. The bass will usually have more chord changes than the guitar in most cases. Eric originally recorded this song just months after Bob Marley released it, with permission of course. Both are amazing renditions and it was at the time Eric was living in Florida getting inspired by Caribbean influences including the music of Bob Marley and The Wailers. 461 Ocean Boulevard is one of Eric Clapton's best albums IMO that this song is on..

Why do i suddenly remember back "a few" decades when that song was new and i almost couldn't stand hearing this song because it was played everywhere all the time (although i have no idea which version that was at that time), and why do i suddenly also want to listen to all the old Santana songs that we listened to too all the time ? anyway, i still like "old music" better than today's stuff, and am glad that reactors "revive" that music and my memories.

This was sort of the gateway drug for Reggae to enter the US mainstream. Ska and reggae had been more present in British popular music, but not really in the US. When Clapton put out this song, suddenly interest picked up quickly. Bob Marley became a huge star in the process, and Reggae and Ska influences became a lot more mainstream, on both sides of the Atlantic. You suddenly had prog bands like Rush with Reggae influenced song sections, kind of indirectly via The Police. And of course in the 90s Ska influenced bands had a big surge with No Doubt sort of being the most visible proponent I guess.

Clapton did that cover in 1974. That is important because the mid-'70s were HUGE for Marley and Reggae. I think that was the year I went to vacation in Jamaica on a shoe string. lol

Reggae emphasizes the importance of the bass that weaves around the more sparse drums & guitar. This is such a great ambassador for the genre & back in the 70's helped bring the original Jamaican invention into the mainstream, allowing bands like The Police & UB40 follow a decade or so later

Thanks for showcasing Clapton's great Blues guitarist hit from his 1973 album 461 Ocean Boulevard. If you haven't checked out his early days in '66 in the band Cream, with Jack Bruce (bass) & Ginger Baker (drummer extrodinaire) you are missing some early rock jams that played a huge role in LP recording. Limiting the standard run time of a song recording to 3 minutes or less was the norm. Several bands started releasing long versions of songs on Albums but I think "Cream" was one leader in that pack. Baker made drum solos a thing and thought of himself as a jazz drummer where improvisations were allready a standard with Black musicians. Fushion of jazz, blues, Native, soul, Latin, R&B, Rock and folk music brought us so much good music beginning in the 1960's. Jamaican Reggae became a spiritual experience for alot of us in the '70's. White groups covering African inspired music became a thing. Much like Rock and Roll picked up on the great Black jazz and blues players style that never received recognition until years later. The roots of popular music is a case study in misappropriation of original artists material going unnoticed until someone points it out. Thankfully there has been a revival of honoring the "greats" that never got their due during their lifetime. Check out Cream's double album "Wheels of Fire" 1968.

This cover of Marley song introduced it to a wide audience, and really brought people to Bob Marley.

Eric Clapton is such an artist, even without the lyrics the music tells a story. I wish you'd react to any version of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". George Harrison wrote it but Clapton made it his own, even according to George. Both artists were best friends despite the fact Eric stole George's wife! A suggestion for a reaction video given your comments in this one. Have a listen to an instrumental piece by The Shadows called "Nivrem." It's a jazz influence piece but the bass guitar has it's own solo about half to three quarters of the way in. It would also be great if you could do a reaction vide to Eric Clapton performing "Layla." He always puts an amazingly beautiful instrumental bit at the end of the song, which is just divine to listen to. The song is amazing, probably one of his best ever.

In Reggae, the Bass is always really important. No bass, then it's not Reggae 😉 It is more likely Ska
