@MaryMag & Martha : Make sure you've turned the big dial ( which is probably on the front, bottom ) from " _FLOOR CLEANING_ " to " _TOOLS_ " and then be sure to pull the trigger on the hand attachment(s) when you're using the hand tool(s). %-) Cheers.

I believe they said, as the clean water leaves the bag inside the tank, the dirty water is sucked up into the actual tank. So, the bag should end up empty leaving dirty water in tank.
