Just like pacific rim did with Raleigh’s character in part 2. Just gave some dumb explanation as to why he doesn’t show up in case they move forward with a 3rd one and they can bring him back. Fact is It’s not that he “couldn’t commit”, it’s that he made it clear he had no intention of continuing. Hence his death. Same for Books.

Great reaction. The Miranda story line was supposed to be at the end of season 2. Book's death was to help Mal find belief in a cause. Wash's death was to show how deadly the situation is. *I feel the two most important books to answer missing questions, to flesh out backstories, and to get additional Firefly lore are the following:* 1) FIREFLY Legacy Deluxe Edition Graphic Novel (1 of 4 deluxe editions currently) - a collection of many comic books - Book's back story, and much more 2) Firefly novel (book 5 of 8 currently) - "Life Signs" - Takes place between Firefly e14 and movie Serenity - Tells us why Inara gave up her pending promotion to travel on a Firefly. Also tells us why Inara was always against a romance with Mal and why she decided to leave Serenity. *SOME KEY COMIC BOOK & NOVEL SPOILERS BELOW on Zoe, Inara, and Book:* - When Zoe was wearing the slinky white dress at the funeral for Wash, Book, and Mr. Universe - Zoe was pregnant with Wash's daughter Emma. Also - Jubal Early is still alive. Story found in the 6 issue comic book miniseries 'Serenity: Leaves on the Wind'. - 'Firefly - Life Signs' novel takes place between Firefly episode 14 and the movie 'Serenity'. Backstory - Inara quit her pursuit to become the Guild Priestess when she found out she was terminally ill. She joined the crew of Serenity to explore the 'Verse before she died. While on Serenity, Inara kept romance at bay with Mal because she was terminally ill. She only told Simon as his patient, who kept her secret. When she found she could no longer hold back Mal's feelings or her own, she left Serenity. Inara was cured of her illness in the novel "Life Signs". Now again on Serenity there are no more excuses to hold off her romance with Mal so she stays on Serenity, giving Mal the "greenlight" for romance. - Shepherd Book's backstory is found in the graphic novel 'Serenity: The Shepherd's Tale'. Book was recruited by the Independents during the war. He was planted as a mole to rise rapidly in the ranks of the Alliance while he secretly spies on them for the Independents.

Zoey at funeral wore a slinky dress. (Shindig) Not word of Joss but of Gina Torres (actress who played Zoey) she (Zoey, the character, not the actress) was pregnant. Now for Jayne/River theory. Jayne in pilot said (to lawman) "it's a girl. She's not all there but not all of her has to be." If River is a willing woman, his part is set. In Ariel when she first wakes up she says to Jayne, "Copper for a kiss." When she is going on about Christmas presents everyone ignores her gibberish, except Jayne getting pissed. Those are his memories and for some reason she finds him fascinating. In the bar in the movie he can sneak up on a effing psychic because in a fight he does not think, he just does. When he thinks on the ship, she takes him easily. (That also explains why she couldn't dodge his blow after the butcher knife in Ariel, although that might just be her being nuts.) No accounting for taste and River might be well advised to keep a guy who can sneak up on her loyal to her, and she likes him for some reason.
@ernesthakey33965 ай бұрын
"They should have shot him then!" Mal's personal code got in the way. Remember what he told Simon in the 1st episode when Simon asked how could he know Mal wouldn't kill him in his sleep? "If I ever kill you, you'll be awake, you'll be facing me, and you'll be armed." Later, in the complex, maybe he should have gone for a head shot, but then the military would probably have shot River later.

The movie was really made in response to a lot of people pissed off that they cancelled "Firefly", so it wasn't really meant to be a stand-alone movie, more like an olive branch to the brown-coats. I was very surprised you didn't immediately recognize "Pax", it's Latin "Pax Romana"; just shocking coming from a Carpathian girl. You mentioned your upcoming birthday, so Happy Birthday (La Multi Ani). Now you and River are the same age ;). Great reaction; enjoyed every minute.
@christopherbruscas93085 ай бұрын
Specifically "pax" means "peace." "Pax Romana" means "Roman Peace." (Yes, they do talk like Yoda.) The phrase refers to a specific period in history. It was Rome's "Golden Age." A period of relative stability with little expansion or warfare. The phrase was not really in common usage during the actual period it describes and came into use by historians later. The phrase has been adapted to other periods in history. AKA: Pax Britannia, Pax Imperia, Pax Americana, etc. I believe "peace" in Romani is pronounced like "pach-eh," so not super obvious it evolved from "pax."

I'm one of those rare browncoats who saw the movie BEFORE even knowing about the series' existence (although I know I'm not the ONLY one). Saw the movie on video, LOVED the movie, bought the movie on DVD, it had a blooper reel (I LOVE blooper/gag reels). When it started showing bloopers from the series (that I had NO clue about), I checked online about it. Afterwards was on a quest to find the series (I wanted/needed to see it). I've had the series on DVD, gave that to my (now) ex-wife and now have the series on a Blu-Ray box-set (and have watched it completely too many times to count). I really do hope they follow through with a proposed revamp of this series. I really can't place a "favorite character" on any one of them; the entire character cast is just awesome. They ALL have their moments to shine. I will admit, though, to kind of favoring Kaylee. I do so primarily because, like YOU young Biss, young Kaylee is CUTE AS HELL!! I'm not sure I have a favorite quote, per se, but I do have a favorite scene group: where River leaps into the room with the Reavers to toss Simon's med bag in to the crew and gets dragged in by the Reavers. Every time I watch this movie with someone for the first time, they ALWAYS say the same thing: "OH NO! Now SHE'S trapped in there with THEM!!" And I always reply (with a wry little grin): "SHE is not trapped with THEM; THEY are trapped with HER." I love your reactions. You're very emotive, very vocal. He also happened to be a double-agent working for the browncoats to try to feed them info when he could. There was a battle where he made some decisions that got a lot of people killed, so he "retired" from his position and became a shepard. Zoey ended up being pregnant in the movie, she just didn't know it yet. She went on to have a girl. Anara had a terminal illness for which there was no cure. I had never heard of the show when the movie came out. We saw the movie anyway and I can say as someone going in cold, they did a great job of giving you all the info you needed to know. I never felt confused by the main story. Sure, there were inside jokes I didn't get at the time, but still liked it tons. It made me want to watch the series, which I later did. So, there's that perspective. One thing I liked that a viewer of the series would not have been able to get was that sense of "this is a crew that's been together" from the get go. The writing, characters, and actors themselves had had the time on the series to get their character down, so when the movie starts, they are at their peak. It's cool sometimes when a movie can pull that off - that sense of "these are lived in characters" from the first frame of the movie. I liked that at the time.

Also the comic book series gave us a ton more backstory of the Sheppard

I like how in the unedited reaction you comment "I hope they give [River] some shoes." I always find it weird seeing River with shoes on.

Favorite scene from the movie for me is when Wash is like tell us again how Jayne got knocked out by a 90 lb. girl 'cause that's never getting old. lol :) Wash was my favorite character in the series, but I thought that everyone did an excellent job. I always suspected that Shepherd was a retired operative for the Alliance, just like the main bad guy in the movie. There is some actual evidence for this. - I remember one episode when he got shot so they took him to an Alliance cruiser for help. They didn't want to help until they saw his Ident Card and then they helped immediately. That always stuck in my head. I would have preferred the show to have gone 6 or 7 seasons, but the movie will have to do for an ending. I give the movie 4 stars for being another couple hours I get to see the crew together minus a star for killing Wash and Shepherd. So, 3 stars.

I've never watched the TV show, yet this is one of my favorite movies ever. It's a very self explanatory story, so watching the show really isn't required.

Might be like that for some, but the series is good.

“What’s your favorite line from the movie?" Yes.

I think the movie has Mal starting off a lot more irritable than in the the series because both Book and Inara have left the ship. They were the two people he could just talk with, who might have words of wisdom or advice, and who were not in the chain of command, so he could relax a bit with them. Now he's got nobody to confide in or work things out with who aren't under his command.

"Finally Some Closure!" hahaha!! So funny, been what? Like couple months? Try THREE YEARS! (and we didn't expect to get that)

I always found it a nice touch they honored Mr. Universe because they had no way of knowing he had sold them out for his "30 pieces of silver."
@paullevan59295 ай бұрын
He didn't sell them out. He was warning them by telling them what would happen when they came to the planet. They had been there a few times before and already knew what to expect. That tipped Mal off that they were there and so his plan of the reavers to follow him was born.

@@paullevan5929 I've been wrong on at least three separate occasions in my life so I re-watched the scene. Clearly Mal had suspicions the operative might be waiting but I had never taken the conversation with Mr. Universe to be why. The trap set with Inara, the crew spoke of it openly and set in place several safeguards. The trap with Mr. Universe, a trap was never mentioned by any of the crew and the only preparations was dragging along the Reavers which I put down to a not unexpected ambush as they left Reaver space. That said, your interpretation could very well be correct. I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere by the cast and I haven't delved into the expanded media to find out for sure.

Zoe should have put a plastic dinosaur on top of Walsh's grave.

It's always too soon, but do you know how Reavers clean their spears? They put 'em through the Wash. Great react!

Nathan Fillion told that joke at a Comic-Con. He also added the "Too soon?"

Not sure if anyone mentioned this yet, but this movie was never designed as a stand-alone. While they did want to make more movies, this one originally was made to tie up the series for the fans that were disappointed in how the series was treated. (shown out of order, and canceled before even finishing a season) There was also rumors that the episode with the casket was filmed just after they got the news that the series was going to be cancelled.

You're right that the movie wouldn't have as much impact if it were stand-alone. I watched it before I ever heard of the series. It wasn't until a couple of years later that I found the Firefly DVD box set in the specials bin at the local electronics store and recognised the ship and crew. I couldn't remember what happened in the movie, so I bought the show and binged it in a few days. Went back the following weekend and got the movie, and I balled like a baby when I watched it. It was so much more impactful after watching the series and falling in love with the characters. And it's that love which makes us Browncoats, so welcome to our ranks. That's the line that's my favourite too, Mal's speech to River at the end about how it's love that keeps Serenity in the sky when she ought to fall, maker her a home. I think he loved Serenity from the moment he laid eyes on her, but the lesson he needed to learn was that it's not just love that makes a ship your home, it's family too. He might not have realised it, but his crew was his family, including Simon and River. It was him sending them away that started their problems. I think he realised his mistake pretty quickly thoug. Once they were on that path, there was nothing else to do but follow it to the end. They were all onboard for the ride, but sadly some would be getting off a might sooner than the rest. Anyway, I enjoyed seeing your reaction to Firefly and Serenity, and I'm glad you enjoyed watching it too. Hope you feel better soon.

As painful as it was to lose Wash, that also made it memorable. To quote Frank Herbert from Dune: Arrakis teaches the attitude of the knife. Cutting off what is incomplete, and saying "now it is complete, because it's ended here". Wash's arc is complete, and the sudden shock of his death was all the more memorable. As for Shepherd - there's a comic book that explains his backstory.

Nice catch on the continuity error. The movie should definitely be watched after the series. Thank you for taking the Firefly journey with us. I am glad you enjoyed it.
