The Biswan house, documented here for the first time in 138 years of it's existence, is a truly remarkable reminder of the fine tastes which have been cultivated in our city's melting pot of cultures, dialects, designs and delicacies.
With the colonisation of India by the British in the 18th century, our country underwent tumultuous transitions in every sphere. One of the most significant and visible changes was in the field of architecture. The architecture, especially of the late nineteenth century, beautifully combined the indigenous and foreign elements, displaying an eclectic style, which certainly had its own identity.
Located 70 kilometers from Lucknow, the House of Biswan, constructed in 1884, plays a pivotal role in preserving the architectural exuberance of Awadh as well as exhibiting the influence of British construction. The majestic golden and red engravings on the rooftops, beautifully designed niches and arches, the vaulted ceilings, multiple entrances on facades and parapets on roofs are reminiscent of the Awadh's finest architectural practices. At the same time the long, silent corridors and occasional column for a decorative touch are suggestive of British influence on Indian aesthetics.
The high ceilings and open, wide verandahs significantly lower the temperatures of the house, which also tend to bring a sort of calmness and serenity to the entire place. Also, the geographical positioning of the house is such that it obstructs direct light from the sun, but with no compromise on its aesthetic pleasantness. This spectacular pearl-white building stands tall amidst large acres of lush green land, which accentuates its beauty further more. While the magnificence of the building can be seen and felt, every corner of this house seemingly holds stories, anecdotes and tales, which remained chronicled or unchronicled, for more than a hundred years. This beautiful house seems to be engulfed by an aura of calmness, serenity and unusual quietness, which further affirm its splendid creation.
