Bit of drama on the Noosa Bar. Australia Day, Friday morning, January 26, 2024.

A yacht hit sand on the way out over the bar this morning. Damaged the tiller and lost steerage. Fortunately, however, it was pushed back into the river mouth and over to the North Shore by the incoming tide and the north easterly wind. Lucky it wasn't the run-out. Anyway, thick low lying cloud here in Noosa this morning. Rain on the horizon. Sloppy swell on the bar and in the bay. Birds heading out. BOM forecast is for north easterly winds 10 to 15 knots turning northerly 15 to 20 knots in the late morning. Seas: Around 1 metre, increasing to 1 to 2 metres around midday. Swell: North to north easterly around 1 metre inshore, increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres offshore. Filmed between 5.55am and 7.15am which was a couple of hours before a 2.07m high tide. Brave-I did assume they had a lifting keel.Think it might be a Hunter Liberty with lifting keel and the two masts.A very popular trailer sailer once upon a time here in the UK Mind you my granddaughters who live thereabouts told me Friday evening your time that weather had been none too good if hot and humid between the rain.

It would not be the Noosa Bar without someone having issues, the entrance changes each week and once the dredging begins let’s see what eventuates from this work.

Why can’t they steer with the small outboard they had it looked they were useing it going out

Shear pin broke along with rudder coming off pintles when 'hit sand' so no motor hence no steering. Person standing up trying to spot way through surf. Shear pin changed on North shore and returned to mooring unaided. Contact with Noosa Coastguard much appreciated throughout incident.
