Seems like the biggest topic this week was the early access thing. I agree with Travis that it's named poorly, but I don't intrinsically hate the concept as long as I can still pay a price I'm comfortable with for a game later. Personally, I'm rarely stoked to pay $70 for a game and so I very often wait a few months and get my games for less - or wait for it to hit gamepass where I am definitely not giving MS the money that would equate to a full price game for the number of games I get to play on there. Waiting to play my games doesn't bother me 90% of the time, and I don't do a lot of multiplayer so I don't have to worry about the playerbase moving on if I'm not in the game during the early days. It's interesting Hoeg brought up the economics because I was thinking the same thing, it makes sense for games to be priced higher as long as people are happy to pay that price. Outside of some "name your own price" system - which I suppose you could argue Humble Bundle does successfully but I don't think would work for a brand new AAA release - locking the game behind successively lower pay walls is a way that makes sense for getting more money from people who are ready to pay it. I think games are already priced that way as we move past release day, where older games tend to be discounted more heavily until you can get Skyrim for $2 10 years after release. "Early Access" could definitely go too far the other way, if say the price was $150 for the exact same game but you get to play it for a month or two before everyone who pre-ordered the $70 version. I think there's a balance to be struck, and some norms to be established, but I could see a future where the game is provided to reviewers in time for the first people who can choose to purchase the game to be able to make an informed decision, and everyone else understands that they can either pay through the nose if they want or they can wait a week to pay $70. Maybe I'm less affected by this because I wait to play most games anyways and therefore waiting an extra week is not a huge difference to me (if I waited 180 days, another 5-10 days isn't a huge marginal difference to me). While, for someone who is used to paying a set price to have access to a game at a set date, any addition to that date is a huge marginal difference (5-10 days is essentially infinite marginal difference on top of a base of zero). I can see how this sucks for people who are willing to pay more for games, but that isn't me.

Hey James! All fair points and I think that speaks to the crux of it - it's a personal thing to each of us. There are many circumstances that can affect a purchasing decision.

Personally, I don't like calling it "Early Access", but I want to point out to Travis that for a game with servers, "Early" Access is a great opportunity to have a smaller and more spread out burst on the servers, letting you fix up issues that come up before a larger surge of players are hitting it. I'm not a fan as a customer, but it really, really helps with server stability and scaling.
