Chamath Palihapitiya is a Sri Lankan-born Canadian-American venture capitalist and the founder and CEO of Social Capital.
Prior to the Social Capital Partnership, Palihapitiya was the longest tenured original member of Facebook's Senior Management team. He served in various roles during his four-year stint at Facebook, including Vice President of User Growth, Mobile and International at the conclusion of his tenure in June.
A resident of Palo Alto, Palihapitiya joined Facebook in 2007 and was a major force in the launch and incredible growth of the social media website, overseeing monetization products, Facebook Platform, managing the team responsible for its mobile products and, ultimately, helping increase the user base to more than 750 million individuals worldwide.
Palihapitiya also held senior management positions at AOL (Vice President and GM of AIM and ICQ), Mayfield Fund (a venture capital firm in Silicon Valley), Winamp and Spinner.com (two internet music pioneers) prior to joining Facebook.
He attended the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada, where he graduated First Class Honors in Electrical Engineering.

But how many people that invest in gold actually have it in their homes? And the point of the decentralised blockchain network is that even if internet does go down in, say, the USA, the blockchain will still be intact on servers in Asia, Europe, whatever, so the Bitcoin wealth will not be lost. When the internet comes back, it is still there.

When he spoke about digital gold, the reasons sound exactly like Bitcoin. How many people have a gold bar in their living room to offset inflation or hedge fund? As for large corporations, they simply put into gold stock which is less safe than crypto. Decentralised cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Litecoin and Digibyte are obviously going to be used for the common man to protect against inflation. As for them fucking it up, i'd say they doing a pretty good job of that which is why Bitcoin has risen so high.

Gold only has value because of its scarcity, and bitcoin is the same. Water is far more valuable to the planet, and us humans, the same as the air we breath. So gold and bitcoin are the same thing, great value because they are scarce and are sort after for a hedge against monetary destruction. Bitcoin is more adaptable so is better. I don’t agree with this. As a crypto newb, the concept of Bitcoin as a digital form of gold made a lot of sense to me. Both are scarce or limited entities of little inherent value to which human societies have agreed to add a concept of value. They are both assets to be employed as a store of value, rather than as a medium of exchange (so Bitcoin should really be called a “crypto asset” rather than a “crypto currency”).

And some people may talk about the industrial value of gold, but we all know that that is not why gold holds the place it does in human history and society.

Here is a question for anyone invested in Bitcoin: do you see Bitcoin being as popular as silver? If so, then Bitcoin's market cap will at least be equal to silver's at some point and Bitcoin will be $75,000. Bitcoin's market cap isn't even at silver's yet. Silver's market cap: 1.5 tril. Bitcoin's market cap: 758 bil. Gold's market cap: 12.2 tril You can go further and say that Bitcoin can be 50% as popular as gold. That means Bitcoin's market cap could be 6.1tril. 6100/758 = Bitcoin price can multiply 8 times from where it is now.

It will continue its bull run until I think until around Q3 2021 where it will find it’s price discovery and will stabilise. Then a gradual increase over the next 5-10 years as more large institutions get in and companies will start rebalancing their cash reserves into Bitcoin. Any 5-year-hold investment in Bitcoin has returned +10x, to date. A few 1-year-hold investments have lost +75%. If you're buying Bitcoin when it is on its Metcalf curve (or near 200d MA) you are betting on a strong track record. If you're buying Bitcoin when it's at a price multiple above the 200d Moving Average (like now)...be ready to hold for 5 years.

First off gold is a tangible item, usable beyond currency. Second, gold is finite where as bitcoin is not. Bitcoin is simple, it's unadulterated, undiluted currency. No central banking, no government entity. Blockchain has already proven itself to be a great way of doing this across multiple platforms. Currency is no different. I was simply stating that I personally would not compare it to gold. Go try and trade bitcoin for a meal and shelter in the mountains.
