You did a great job of containing your anger and disgust. Shame on those ‘owners’. There were so many other alternatives - not to mention their mishandling of the dog, and possibly the child. To lash out at you on social media is cowardly. Poor dog. Poor kid(s).

Keep keeping it real, Haz. There are trash bag versions of people everywhere. My sister’s Shield GSD is 7 months old and he is doing fantastic. Started bite/protection work with this dog a few weeks ago and he is brilliant. He isn’t the high drive monster like I enjoy for sport and work but he is the perfect dog for my sister’s first dog and it’s exactly what Haz and I discussed she needed before she took delivery of the puppy. I bring my young children around him all the time. VERY STABLE!!!

Sounds like a situation that could have happened with any breed because they failed to properly manage their dog AND their kid. It sucks the puppy got the short end of the stick - they could have just brought him back to you. On another note: CONGRATS on 100.000 subscribers!!

Biting incident when I was young: When I was a baby, we apparently owned a German Shepherd that had received some form of protection training. The dog came with the house that my parents bought (long story). My Dad loved the dog - he could make him sit in a puddle of water. From my mom's perspective, he was poorly trained - but she knows very little about dogs. One day, my little cousin - a toddler - pulled at the dog's stomach hair. The dog reacted by biting the toddler in the face - my cousin ended up having bite mark scars on his forehead and on his chin. After that incident, my parents got rid of the dog - they didn't want the dog to bite me. So they gave the dog to an older gentleman who needed to go on walks anyway. In this case, would you think that the dog might have been a danger to kids in general? Or was it simply owner error in that they allowed a visiting toddler to play in close proximity to the dog, without teaching the child how to be respectful?

Great video! It’s amazing to me how few people take even a little time to understand the dogs they have. I have a Giant Schnauzer and while she’s not bite trained, I do use Tug to train and build engagement. She loves it, and comes at me like a monster when we play. My wife teaches piano at home and has kids from 5 yrs old up. Changing throughout the day. Our dog is young and sometimes a little excited to see them, but is so gentle with all of them.

When you talk about the head level of children and dogs it brought to mind something I am pretty sure you have pointed this out: that dogs know *someone* needs to be in charge of the pack. So if the adults humans are not in charge of the those children then the dog figures they have to be the pack leader resulting a dog that disciplines an unmanage child as it would a puppy or an out of line pack member.

Hello, this story is REALLY bothering me. I have had German Shepards all my life from the age of 16. My Parrent sent me to school when I was 16 to learn how to teach a dog in particular German Shepard. In my 20’s I again went to a more advanced school. I have never taught or trained anyone else’s dogs except mine. I am not a professional but I do have a knack with dogs specially German Shepherds. I have had German Shepherds for over 25 years. I now have a special German Shepherd, he is a registered service dog as I have a partial disability due to bone cancer. I did most of the training but has a professional assist me the the disability part of the training for one I am not qualified to do this and the other for obvious reason. I tell you this as I have yeas of 1st hand experience with German Shepherds and YOU are 100% CORRECT !!!! This is totally DISGUSTING that they would KILL a very young dog due to their inept ability to care, get proper training and or guidance. Something lead up to this situation like a 5 year old pulling on the dog’s tail once to often, hitting the dog, etc. I have personally seen this before and the dog was return and because of what occurred with a 7 - 8 year old. With lots of love and correction to the behavior that occurred over time the dog was placed with a good home and did fine. These people should be charged with cruelty to animals and prosecuted. Further, the vet should be investigated My German Shepherd goes to work with me everyday, goes out to dinner in restaurants goes food shopping with me , etc. When I need to be in the hospital he was right there with me. I have had him in a hospital ER to ease the stress level of kids. These people did something SO WRONG !!!! Ricky from IBM, Ret.

Spot on Haz. Sad situation with those owners and your bred pup. Pride is just so selfish, esp when putting a dog's life in jeopardy. I also think it's the people that call themselves "trainers" that are looking at the dollar instead of doing proper eval on a dog. Those dogs turn into dangerous disasters and make the avg dog owner skeptical of doing sport work or protection with their dog. Thank you for being straightforward, honest, and transparent with your viewers. Wish you all the best and nothing short of a thriving business!

Thank you for sharing a difficult story. There are people who should not be allowed to raise these fine animals but are too selfish to be able to acknowledge their weakness. While a contract doesn't always get followed, I wonder if a clause requiring the return of the dog before killing it may have deterred them. I saw that once in a contract bc the breeder had experienced exactly what happened to you. A sad and needless death of a beautiful boy.

I have two washout working Shepherds who are our pets and have never once bitten my children! My Rottweiler on the other hand bit all of us when he was a pup. They needed to get a trainer and fix the problem! It makes me sick to know that people don't take responsibility for an animal they promised to take care of. My Rottie was a complete jerk, but he's trained now and he will have a home for the rest of his life. If he has issues, it is my responsibility to correct them.

Most decent breeders put those wash outs down. Depends on what you're washing for. Poor nerves weak nerves. It's green dream. Genetic fear reactivity which also stems from nerves green dream. If it just lacks drive it might be able to be homed in a pet scenario. Generally the idea is to breed out these faults. So youre trying to get more successes then failures overall. If you keep the majority of what you wash you'll never get there.

1) It’s pretty disgusting how readily some people will blame a dog’s behavior on everything but their shitty handling. It took me damn near 6 months to figure out how to fix the train wreck rescue I got last year, and I don’t recall thinking the dog was to blame. 2) For the love of god please figure out how to make a satirical bitework video with a toddler sized bite suit. Without teaching a dog biting toddler sized people is acceptable of course. (That last bit isn’t for Haz. Doesn’t strike me as stupid enough to miss a joke)

I have worked in a prison with working dogs, yes I have seen one unstable one. I was the nurse that took care of the handler (it went for his throat). I have shown Havanese, I have groomed, I have done obedience, I have trained agility (until I was told not to run before a knee replacement). Just to busy now, till I retire. I have small grandchildren, and I would trust your evaluation of the dog. Shame on that guy, a responsible breeder will always do the right thing. I would have been angry as well.

I have a mixed terrier dog. A Rescue. I learned after having him 6 months he was beaten by kids as a pup. I work with schools. I took him to schools everyday he wouldn’t even look at small kids. I was worried when I had my own kids. I put hours, days and weeks in to learning dogs and how they see kids. They see them differently than bigger people. Especially small kids on the floor. And infants. Infants stare and don’t blink much. This can spook a dog. I’ve 2 kids now. My dog loves them no end. They have sat on him run into him with a bike all sorts of accidents. He has lived with them for 9 yrs now. Never bit them . I thought the kids about boundaries and the dog. I thought the dog that kids are his best friend. It’s sad that these people put down this dog. Awful shame. He could have been rehomed to another place. Families need to be dog trainers and kid trainers.

I fully agree with you Haz. Here in the UK police dog's live with the handler not in kennels and many have families. Most even adopt the dog as their own after it's brave service life is over. My own 9 month old bomb proof GSD is so gentle with tiny children, even children that we don't know (although it's very closely monitored) but you should see him run and bite the cushion, such power. Ignore idiots who have no clue. No police dog's bite children here in the UK, never.

I miss my Diesel. He was a one of a kind special dog. MASSIVE mixed breed from a farm. I will never find one like him again. He was smart. He LOVED kids anyones kids could run at him jump on him grab his face climb over him and he would love on them put up with it and he would gaurd them. Without being told without training for it he only had obedience training. I would tie him up outside a shop come out and he would have 3 or 4 little kids all around him no parent in sight. And he would sit and gaurd them. and one day a man came up and reached for his kid, and Diesel went between them and grabbed this mans hand didnt bite down hard but held his hand and stared him dead in the eyes. This man shit himself. I asked the kid if this was her father I didnt know she said yes. So I said ok told Diesel to let go he did. He protected me from drunk men who would come up and try to mess with me. He never injured anyone but he knew how to make a point noone was ever dumb enough to try and fight him. he gaurded my house, my belongings my chickens. He never hurt a chicken. He used to wrestle with our pet turkey and they got rough it looked bad that turkey was an asshole and would lay into my dog and the worst he had was a scratch. No man was getting in my house or my yard. He was just special. he died a few weeks back from a paralysis tick. a positive ownly trainer labled him dangerous and untrainable and wanted him put down. I told them to fuck off and learned to train myself. he as the best.

Some people shouldn't even have a pet. I have a 3 year old Bouvier, never trained her for anything but to be my best friend. Did give her basic obedience training, but that's it. She will play with other dogs male or female and if the there dog yelps, she will stop and see if the dog is alright, and wait until the other dog initiates the play again. She loves to play but she decided to become a personal protection dog without notifying me. Never bit anyone, just herded them back to their truck and held them there until I gave her the out command. No bite training, but sure if I needed help she wouldn't hesitate. She loves kids and is extra gentle with them, just as I want her to be. I think dogs take on the personality of their owners. That person proved he was an ideot by having the dog put down. The owner needed training, not the dog! You see it all the time on those dog whisperer videos. Neurotic people make the dog neurotic.

Hi Again, every I went to secure a German Shepherd( after I got over the loss of my pal, around 14 years old and it takes me 6 months) I had to go through an interview process with the breeder and then they would do a background check on me and then when I selected a puppy(8 - 14 weeks old typically closer to 14 so I could judge the puppy) the breeder would judge if they felt it was a good match. You can feel when you and a puppy/dog click. A lot of the time the dog will select you and they it has to be mutual. When I lived in Los Angeles, I had a dog that I bite trained. You have to like you said judge if it is in the dog to do that. Ricky from IBM, Ret

When a bite occurs inside its group it is never the dogs fault, it is always a case of the human in control not reading the dogs body language and emotional state, sadly this is the vast majority of owners and they always blame the dog for their own ignorance in not understanding dogs and dog behavior, they think human instead of thinking dog, a dog will never just snap there will always be signs long before a bite happens, they also have no understanding of the genetic potential within the dog in a given situation. The potential to do something is inbuilt within the genetics which spills into the second part of the equation, dogs including the washouts that are created from many generations of performance breeding will have more intent when the right strings are pulled in his/her head, this is situational and is a hidden in low drive easy going individuals from a highly bred for performance bloodline, they may not express but they carry the genetic dna of the very best dogs within the bloodline, that genetic material doesn't go anywhere it's just not expressed at the same levels the best dogs express themselves, the breeding/ blood is the same from the same gene pool, the way it rolls is controlled by prepotency which is the strengh of an individual to influence when bred, its the very reason washouts as you call them Haz, have the breeding potential to produce the best of the bloodline because thats the makeup of their inheritance, potential in dogs is genetic-based environmentally expressed, because something is not expressed doesnt mean its not there, to tap into full expression you need the right keys to unlock them, and right here is the art and science of breeding performance animals. Ive never owned a guard-type breed of dog, although Ive lived dogs every day of my life and bred and raised 100s of performance dogs over 50 years, I never ever like a situation of a well-bred dog that was lacking in competition quality to go to people that dont understand the potential within, they see four legs and a fur coat, they dont see how intense the best of the bloodine really were and they dont understand the situational triggers the dog will react to, when a bloodline is built for go, the ones that dont have the same potential intent hidden within, when bred they have the same potential to produce a great animal, doesnt mean you stack them in a breeding program, some times because of the hidden potensial that's genetically engrained in our washouts they are better of culled than going into the wrong environment, they will always come back to hurt you, and as we started its never the dogs fault.

I believe that working line shepherds bred to bite can be dangerous to children if they do not go through the necessary training or are placed in inexperienced homes. I have an intact male working-line shepherd (his registered name is Eliot von der Alte Baum). Right now; personally, I would not trust him around children, but I believe with consistency this dog has a lot of potential and with successful training I will be able to one day trust him off leash with children. It’s not that he is “aggressive”; but he is extremely high drive and needs to learn impulsive control and bodily awareness. He’s the type of dog that could accidentally hurt a child if the dog did not respect the handler and the boundaries they were taught through training. This is why it’s important to build communication and mutual respect with your working K9 and make sure there is 100% clarity.

It was the owners neglect,they have to continue the work not just let the dog go to its own devices and think it’s gonna be ok.sounds like they wanted someone to blame to take the attention off them.something had to of happened that led to this.I pray they just lied to get your attention and get u upset.I watch videos and research as we will be getting one in the future.any dog it’s training for life,keeping their mind sharp by working with them everyday.so sorry for the loss of that baby

That's heart breaking if that's true about a docile GSD you sold to this family. Is there no contract in place where you take your dogs back no matter what?
@hardcorek9510
@hardcorek9510 Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, contracts are not worth the paper they are written on. The cost to take people to court would not make sense and even if you won, there is no guarantee that they would comply with the court order. I just read a post where a co-owner, who was under contract had sold the breeders dog. They are basically out the dog and any money it would have made from breeding. They can't find the person the last I checked.

I am sorry to hear about this and your pain. I am starting a dog breeding program with some friends of mine with the goal to produce what you produce. The reality is 750 thousand to one million dogs are euthanized in this country every year. Are we going to blame the dogs. Unfortunately there is no regulation and requirement that people act responsibly. We can only try to make it better.

Got my first Sable GSD at 5 months old.. he’s not a working line more of a goof ball.. but does show some natural good protection traits and he’s great with my kids... I grew up with dogs so I’ve had the experience.. one thing I love about him is his couch potato personally... it’s sad to know they put that dog down .. what trash owners..

I have a question. I watch the dog toward the end engage a guy in a body suite. He still had a lead on while he was running toward the bad guy. It looks like the dog could trip on the lead, why not take the lead off. I have not seen this before a dog going after a bad guy with a lead on. Ricky from IBM, Ret

Teaching control, the lead encourages a good hold (by helping dog to pull bite guy) & it helps it have control when training the release from the bite.

@@eartheclipse9623 But while the dog is running with the lead still attached and trailing behind the dog, one of their paws front or rear can cause the dog to stumble. It’s been my observation here in Florida watching the dogs train and in practice the lead is removed prior the dog being sent on his mission. Also, training with members of LAPD SWAT(not with the dog, firearms training) I again observed the dogs having the lead removed prior to them being sent I their mission. I can only surmise and it seems logical to remove the lead when a dog is sent to take down an individual. They use a 10’ - 20’ lead during a search or tracking event. It would seem to be that a best practice would be in a seniors when dog is being sent to bring down an individual and hold that individual to remove the lead. It a suspect is running away would have to remove the lead so the dog does not trip or the lead does not get caught on something like a branch or rebar, etc. In my years of owning GSDs I did have one when I lived in Los Angeles(I no longer live there) I did train a dog for bite work. As I have said previously I am not a professional and recognized that you are although I have been to school to learn these skills and only have limited training skills and are used only when I loose my buddy / pal where as you do it every day. Any way I enjoy your channel and learn from your channel and it’s a great refresher on the things I already know. Ricky from IBM, Ret

@@k4vms @Ricky Kurtz it would depend on the level of the dogs training tbh, with youngsters they may need a long line or secure working facility if recall is still poor or dog as I said is being helped by the handler, I didn't say anything about sending a dog through woods trailing a long line or any similar that would just be daft tbh. I've also had gsds, collies & now malinois X 's so I'm not inexperienced either, was a quick suggestion to you question based on reasons I could think of without a massive reply. I think there was someone asking bout recall tools earlier too. 2 of my gsds were protection dogs, one I trained myself (long time ago) & both were real life proven, one of current my mal X's could do protection, however, his brother it depends if he can learn to control himself (if he can't then teaching him bite work is just dangerous, he's going through a bout of fear aggression ATM too) (only 7 mth) if not he shows great promise for scent/tracking work on its own. My collie X was basically a farm & hiking/endurance dog.

@@eartheclipse9623 thank you for that explanation. I have experience a fear biter, when the dog experiences fear its reaction was to bite. It was not my dog(thank god). I have GSDs all my life. For me there is none better. I am amazed what a malinios are able to do. They fly through the air. Things a GSD body is not equipped to do. My dog will respond to English and German command and to me doing a HiLo whistle But he has one special recall command word that is Japanese and for him it means come ASAP !! Regardless what your up to. Thanks again for the response. Ricky from IBM, Ret

Sir, I have great respect for your work and expertise. This video is very informative overall; however, I do not fully agree with your position regarding the outcome of the incident. A bite history is a serious matter. This could have been a life-changing incident for the child. A tragic ending, but I do not believe that the dog could have ethically been re-homed to another environment where children might be exposed to the risk, and the liability for any second owner would have been great, as a bite history is required by law to be disclosed and reported. The dog would have required a very particular home. I love dogs, but do not believe that the right to a "second chance", as many call it, supersedes the public's right to safety. Many of the comments below seem to minimize the seriousness of the situation, saying that it could have been "fixed". I would like to see more content on responsible ownership and management.

Better w kids than w adults. Fuck the owner who put a dog down bc he/she was too lazy and prideful. Sorry that happened.

What a shameful thing those people did. I recently had to put my GSD down due to aspergillosis and it’s one of the most heartbreaking things I’ve ever gone through. How someone could see it as a solution to something rather than merely training the dog is just astonishing and awful. What pieces of shit those people are.
