Karen was mad at me the other day because she said her dog didn’t like that my dog was off leash . Lady if my dog is obedient and chilling next to me “ off leash “ and isn’t bothering you or approaching you , it’s not my problem . It’s your dog that you don’t know how to control. Thanks for all the help with training my puppy.

I was more than shamed as I correctly corrected my 10 month old, 60 pound, female GSD. I was taught how to use the prong collar by my professional trainer. A woman screamed at me and actually pushed me down and said, "How do you like it?" I had just had a total knee replacement and she caught me totally off guard. Barking, lunging, and spit flying (she had not been trained in bite or protection work) I don't know how I managed, but I held on to the leash because my dog, Violet, was trying to go after her. Police and my trainer said that if Violet had made contact it would have been on her...not me. People need to mind their own business.

Completely true. I always feel sorry for larger breed dogs because they are automatically held to such a higher standard than small dogs. A pomeranian who bites children is just "spunky" while a german shepard who bites children is probably going to be put down. On the one hand, it makes sense, but on the other hand people need to realize that when their methods for "controlling " their small dog don't work for large working dogs.

It has happened to me a few times and stopping it is direct and short: " I own this dog and if you have a complaint, file it with the local court or police animal control ". A dog with an electronic collar or prong collar that is also leashed is following the law in nearly all towns and counties.

Lol, my brother stopped walking his 8 month old lab, he didn't feel comfortable walking her in public, because he was nervous about having to correct her, and how people would react. I told him to buy an e-collar and learn how to use it, he love's it, and now even my nieces and nephew's, walk her. I don't care what people think. I have 3 shepherds, I don't ask them shit. I tell them, and if they don't do what they're told I correct them. I try to use funny words, so that people think I'm kidding, but when I say it, the dog's know. Shepard's are 100 pound 4 year olds, with crocodile teeth, they need training, and consequences. Karen needs to shut up, and worry about her own shit.

EXACTLY! Remember: these are the same people who will get mad when your dog barks or acts out in any way, shape or form. They think dog's are born knowing what to do and that all it takes to continue this behaviour is "treat, treat, treat, yes, yes, yessss!".These are the same Karens who think all dogs learn the same and that it's so easy to train a reactive and stubborn dog. And yet many of them have dogs that can't even sit when told. But it's somehow okay because it's a chihuahua and not a 50+ lb doggo.

I used to think dogs didn't need big corrections on prongs ever until I worked with a corso and a shepherd that both resisted pressure like it was nothing and nothing but a baseball swing level correction worked as a correction. Not all dogs are the same, some dogs need nothing but a finger level of pressure and others need a huge one.

I have two sheppherds with two completely different personalities. One is working line and very driven and reactive, one is avoidant and stand offish with strangers and loud noises. However, they both pull like crazy on the leash and need firm corrections with the prong and/or ecollar. They are much better now but they still need more work. They are perfect offleash but I can't do that off my property. Even then, their prey drive can take over and have them running after deer or rabbits, in that case, the ecollar has saved me and them from disaster on numerous occasions. I'm sick of people on their high horse judging me and how I handle my dogs. I have them under control, they need to mind their own.

I actually needed to see this. I'm in Canada as well, and our dogs are meticulously trained. But, there are times I'm out on the trails, and my dog needs a sharper leash correction (very occasionally, most of the time she knows the rules), but I'm too scared to give the 'right' amount of correction for my dog that I know is effective to remind her that's not OK, because I worry it might be seen as abusive. I don't know if I'll be able to get over that concern immediately, but hearing a professional trainer remind us that it's all right to correct our dogs in the right way at the right times is helpful. Thanks!

I was thinking about this video today and about aversives in both dog training and parenting children, what is more aversive, isolating your dog/kid in a bubble and grounding them and keeping them cut off from the rest of the world and unable to do pretty much anything or giving your dog/kid the occasional correction and telling them to knock that shit off so they can keep enjoying life the answer in my mind is very clear. One seems cruel and even abusive, the other seems like the lesser of the two evils, yet the force free/'gentle parents' don't seem to understand this fact and dogs and children alike suffer because of it.

You hit the nail on the head when you said she was projecting her own emotions onto the situation. I could not see anywhere in what you did when you passed her as being wrong or traumatising to the dog you had with you. Her behaviour on the other hand could be only characteristic of a very sad human being, that has nothing better to do than to go around following random people (probably especially with a camera crew) looking for her 15 seconds of fame or attention. It truly is sad because she doesn’t really care anything about the dog at all, because if she did she would have noticed your shirt saying that you were a dog trainer and she would have noticed that what you had done wasn’t harsh at all. Thank you for your passion for dogs and caring about what happens to them, there should be more people in the world like you, who actually care about things and actively do something about it, not pretend like this lady and just stalk others and yell at them.

I trained pet dogs for 20 plus years. Clicker cookie philosophy and the Karens that feel compelled to preach at me drove me out. They’ve done worse than chastise. One time a Karen went over and unhooked my pinch collar while one of my dogs was on a long line and holding a down. I’ve had e collar remotes snatched from my hand (Since that happened I operated it from my pocket and covered the receiver with a bandana ) I have had police and animal control called after breaking up dog fights (without using treats) and also had my vehicle vandalized.

Ok, I've said it many times before, I'm from NYC, Brooklyn to be exact. I believe that just like your children, your dog is a reflection of you. If I don't correct my dog, and then he goes to bite you, what's the first thing that they are going to say? .......ALL TOGETHER NOW, " WHY DON'T YOU TRAIN THAT DOG?!!!" I don't have the time to humor these snowflakes or try to explain dog training to them. And, I don't take kindly to being lectured at my age. Especially, not from someone who can't control their own dog. I calmly and politely tell them that I am training the dog as a professional and a caring person as well. And, if I don't do it, then this dog won't have a good life. He will either be in the house all day, or be a menace to society, or, worst of all, be put down, even though he's very good in every other way and very much loved. Now, which one of those options does she prefer????? If she can come up with a more viable solution, then I will be glad to hear it. Until then, SHUT THE F**K UP, MIND YOUR BUSINESS AND GET OUT OF MY WAY!!!! Of course, I don't actually say it that way, but, the look I give them conveys the message

Same here. The ecollar helped so much. I can walk two GSDs offleash now. I even used the ecollar to train my dogs to get used to gunshots. It's best I expose them to it instead of having them run off when someone else fires a shot nearby. If I pause in the middle of a trail and freeze, they both freeze without verbal command or ecollar correction becuse of the training I did with the ecollar. I actually refused to use it one month into working with a professional, I thought it was cruel. It is actually more cruel to not train my dog and hand him off to a shelter or have him put down. I'm glad I woke up. I've released so much potential in both of my dogs. I never would have known what they're capable of, had I not used tools that are stigmatized by ignorant people.

We adopted a 6yo+ 10lb mixed terrier which goes at every dog she sees, no matter the size. She starts screaming every time she sees an animal. We are her 5th family and she gets better or she's put down because she was extremely reactivate when we got her. I've given her a lot of structured training for her to reduce her reactivity. The other day I was walking her and one of the neighbours walks her chihuahua without leash with no control whatsoever over it. The dog came to smell ours and our dog lost her mind and started screaming and lunging and the chihuahua. I was given her leash corrections and this stupid lady tells me "don't do that to her" and I replied "basically she's doing that to herself". After that she went onto making shaming comments "people like you shouldn't have dogs" and me stressed trying to make my dog not bite hers just told her "you don't know what you are talking about so mind your own business". Next time she tries to shame me I don't think I'm going to be as nice as I was then

This is the exact video I needed from you! I have a 19 month old Shepherd / Boxer mix who isn’t fearful or aggressive. Rather extremely over excited and rude when approaching other dogs, he is just very in their face and has this very high energy which nobody enjoys! And could of course lead to a fight some day. I’m so hesitant to let the slip lead go a little and ‘bite’ it at the end. Tomorrow on my walk hopefully I come across dogs and don’t hesitate to correct him. He’s super off leash and won’t go anywhere without my permission and he’s super work / play motivated which is great. Just need our walks to be a little bit calmer (they have got better but the methods I use are getting better also) so hopefully I can get over my anxiety of people judging me.

A few years back i ended up in an article in the local digital news paper for training IGP with my dog and a local group. I along with my helper was accused for training my dog with violence, as described "training dogs with violence, hitting and kicking the dog" What actually happend during the session was that the dog got preassured by the helper with a soft stick. Regular IGP work. We later found out that the preson calling us in was sitting in a nearby building where they have a outdoor bathtub section and also serving alcohol. So this guy called us in from around 200 meters away not knowing what was actually going on. Im not sure if im more shocked about the guy calling it in or the newspaper swallowing the case and writing about it without getting any confirmation on the story. I got in touch with the newspaper company, identified myself and explained what was going on. They later changed the story with a new headliner "A big missundestanding" The comments tho, from users on the digital newspaper was not very nice. "I feel sorry for these dogs ending up at owners training them for combat with violence" and so on. The article still exists today but its all in Norwegian. If it was in english i would have posted it here. Tought this was a funny story to add along after watching your video.

I have 4 dogs and 3 of them I got because people couldn’t handle them anymore. One with extreme anxiety to the point of pooping another with extreme fear to where I went almost 2 weeks I think for her to get comfortable enough to eat in front of me and to stop snapping and running away at my other dogs and another with reactivity to other dogs when outside.

I was working with a dog who was behaviorally similar to this dog but was an English bulldog. I’ve had this dog for like two days and went into pet smart with just a slip leash on the dog (I felt comfortable because he was not a big dog and I could read him very well) a petsmart trainer comes over to ask us what we need and whatnot, I see my dog start to build so I corrected him fairly firmly. This lady just freaked out. She asked me why I jerked my dog when he “was just standing there”. I tried to explain but she just went on and on about how he was an “easy dog” since he could be in petsmart and how if I gave him a cookie when he looked at the other dog he would be fine. Lady was nuts. Btw, this dog wasn’t afraid of or insecure around dogs at all, he just really really enjoyed trying to kill the other dogs, so I had to make doing that very unpleasant for him.

How true this is my GSD is great at obedience always off leash when safe but when she sees a cat before I see it and get her into my side she will react happened this morning went after the cat I grabbed her by the collar and lifted her off her feet and walked her passed a large group of men they couldn't believe I could handle her as I am a 8 stone 70 year old woman we have a lovely life together but I knew nothing about dogs before I got her for three years I have walked her played with her while training for two hours every morning I had to change or I would have really messed her up thanks for all our free lessons .

Picture it I am 5'2 woman that weighs about 95 pounds. My biggest dog weighs 110 pounds he is 7 years old he has always been highly intense, highly reactive very dominant and chased a burglar off my property twice. Ive had dogs like this most of my life. My new dog is a dogue de bordeax and he is already aproaching 85 -- 90 pounds. I HAVE to be in control and I am and if I loose it for a second I damnwell get it back and I will correct the shit out of those dogs because I have had broken bones and dislocations from getting pulled and knocked over and dragged ive broken up dog fights with great danes and pit bulls. SERIOUSLY people KARENS f5king shame me in public for giving a little pop on a prong and growling deep and saying NO and making him do a training drill on the spot. Apparantly I am being cruel and abusive. I had 5 people come at me and go nuts and I stood my ground because thats my temperment and I have to be tough. And I love my dogs to the end of the earth and they love me and we have a great time and they get to walk and swim and play and be dogs never mind how much awesome shit I feed them. I train and train and train and Im still working on it and trying to get better because I am nowhere as good as you im not a proffesional but I keep watching people like you I keep working on it we hit a problem I keep learning we dont give up. But there are so many people who cause us problems because they are just idiots. Look at the size of me and the dog lol and then combined weight they are going to be over 200 pounds of raw mastiff muscle they think me giving them a little pop is going to hurt them lol. I handled bulls and stallions it made me tougher. I know how dangerous things can get if you are not on control and they don't respect you.

I have to say that your videos help me as I have a 10 month old female Shiba Inu and I know my personality is to be a softy so I have needed to take obedience training from the start to develop the skills to properly train my girl .. seeing what your dogs are able to do helps me to continue to work at the training even though some days I just want to cry and give up .. my girl is getting better at loose leash walking but we still have work to do and her/“my” (lol) basic obedience skills are still needing work .. I do have an e collar that I hope to train her on some day if I can master her basic obedience .. I do get upset about what people think of me out in public (I use a prong collar with prong tip covers-as she was really choking herself out on all other collars and even several types of harnesses I got for her (plus she totally hates the harnesses and really objects to trying to get them on her)) .. so thank you for your help and posts

Why is it ALWAYS women with uncontrolled small dogs who are the WORST? They know the least but flap their cake holes the most. I had a dumbass in my neighborhood with two shrieking Chihuahuas pulling like a pair of Huskies on harnesses towards my VERY reactive male WGSL Coatie GSD, and I had to basically correct him on his prong like I was rowing oars to get him to chill out (I also redirected and kept him moving away to lessen his pressure) and she said he should be on a harness and he’s “out of control”. I started laughing and said he’s on a prong collar; he’s not going anywhere, and her dogs were more out of control than mine. She RAN to her door (which in of itself was impressive-she had to be close to three bills) while both her dogs were still both losing their shit screaming and lunging and my boy was by now just standing there.

I have a 4 month old Malinois x GSD,. she is gorgeous, smart and totally my baby. She likes her Mal Mama is pretty aggressive at times. My son has a landscaping business and parks his equipment at our place, he has two guys that work with him and come in and out picking up equipment. These guys are like family and my dog loves them, they can walk in the house and she happily greets them, until they approach me, then it's teeth showing, growling, barking and slobber flying, a complete 180 from the way she greets them, I'm working on socializing her, but she still goes all Cujo when people approach me, especially if we're in my truck. Been working on basic commands and she's doing great, some tricks thrown in for fun. I've been working on heel with her in the house and backyard. Yesterday I decided to take her around the block for a walk. On our walk we passed a house with two pitbulls chained in the front yard ( pisses me off when I see chained dogs) but that's another story. As we passed they started lunging on their chains and barking, my girl started to go after them, I gave her a quick pop of the leash and after two pops she settled back into our walk. A Karen one house up and across the road seen what happened as she was out getting her mail, she started towards me all Karened out, waving her arms with her mail yelling at me. " I seen what you did to that dog, animal abuse is illegal and I'm calling animal control on you" Meanwhile my girl is growling, barking and showing her pearly whites at this lunatic frantically waving her arms and screaming at me. I gave the no command but she continued to growl, I popped her leashed again, at this point the crazy lady must have engaged a brain cell and backed off, now screaming " that dog is vicious, it needs too be put down" 🤦🏻‍♀️. I smirked at her and said, guess you're for animal cruelty huh, then added ( immature I know) lady you should happy I'm able to control her or you could be laying in the road all bloodied! She did a about face and huffed off. The breeder/trainer is meeting me tomorrow at a tractor supply place to work with us on her aggression towards strangers approaching me. Some people really need to get a life. Sorry you had to deal with it too. Keep up the good work, I'm learning a lot from you, So thank you for what you do. God bless you!

All very well put. Obviously these two women have no knowledge of how to properly train a dog and, choose to comment on a topic they have no knowledge of. Notwithstanding attempting to call you out for what was a proper training technique. Unfortunately common sense is not that common. They missed an opportunity to get a learning moment out of their experience had they voiced their concern in the manner of a question giving you the opportunity to explain if you chose to, the techniques used and the particular situation the Dog was in.

"They" try n shame those of us using prong and e collar (appropriately of course) is also not okay. I have fear based animal reactive 75 lb GSD - i use both prong snap, vibration low tap as needed. It helps me keep reactivity under control w/o needing physical strength. I went through a trainer to learn how. It's sad the Karen's have to get in our business! I even have vest that says reactive in training give space so as not to deal w/ them so much. And yes we do need to be out in public to desensitize the reactivity.

Hey buddy. You’re a professional and as a professional you have committed your life to a selected career to help people and their dogs. It’s unfortunate that some people can use a platform as this to criticize others when they don’t know anything about what they should do to parent their own dogs. When it comes to kids there is no book on raising them. When it comes to dogs it’s amazing people like yourself who have committed themselves to help. Don’t feel like you have to justify yourself. Peace!

Hired a Afghan war Vet dog trainer for my 2 reactive Malinois. First Day of dealing with their reactivity at the dog park Went Great. Dogs finally were controllable after 14 months. But them back in the crates on my Pick up and started to discuss this session and next outing. An Old Karen with 2 White overweight G.S. decided my Malinois shouldn't be in crates. My Dogs went Nuts as the Old Bag and her dogs were at the Back of my Pick up arguing with us. My Mals are abused Rescue dogs that were attacked several times as Pups and chewed up. So of course they would go Nuts having large dogs 3 ft.away while they are locked in a Crate. This Crazy Karen would not back away from my truck. Even after We explained that They are afraid of Your Dogs. Then an old man decided to put His 2 cents in with his 2 Dogs and it turned into a Loud argument. We told go over there and Call the Police but get away from my truck and Dogs. The two Old Farts insisted their dogs won't hurt anybody and that my dogs were barking because they were afraid of being locked in the crates. Finally these two Know it All Walked away after taking Photos. My Dogs became Completely Silent and Calm. As they were calling the Police, I Yelled out You see You Dumb M.F.A holes after you stopped tormenting my dogs they were completely calm. The crowd that gather Could See my Dogs were only Barking because of the 2 Karen's 4 Dogs. Skip 1 month later my Mals are the Best Behaved Dogs at all the Dog Parks We Go to. They don't even want to associate with the Other Dogs because there is no dog that can run as fast and jump as high. My Dogs can jump 2- 5 ' high fences and bring the ball back. Mals are in a league of their own.

Got a reactive female Husky like that, she's particular about other females & little dogs... so I take your advice on exposure (avoidance is bad ju ju, doesn't fix problem like you've advised), correction & patience. *I'm glad you brought it to people's attention, sometimes it's their own yappy little ****machines that are the reactive one... I especially can't stand little dog let offleash walking up to Husky, she swung around on 1 bold enough, it **** itself yelping when she 'mouthed' it's torso like a shark... at least the owner was accountable & apologise d to me 🤣👍

Public shaming happens to the best of the people. Honestly, it's so bad nowadays with social media and how fast we can communicate. Don't take it too personally. You've done your best to help a reactive dog. As unjustifiable as it is, it could be the case that the woman who complained is just having a bad day and decided to take it out on you.

People need to stop treating their dogs like children! I own a a German shepherd and she needed correcting to get her in line but now she is a wonderful dog great with kids! Without the correcting, she would have been very aggressive, dominant, and dangerous. Theses are dogs, not humans.

Personally I don’t care what Karen’s think cause my dog was on his way to getting put down due to aggression. Through balanced training I took him trick or treating no issue 7 months into training. Cookies wouldn’t have worked because he found biting people to be the #1 best solution to people coming up to him. Hell, he used to growl when people would just say his name prong collar on and two days into corrections he was an different dog. I don’t really need corrections anymore and he doesnt need his prong either. But balanced training saved his life.

She clearly doesn't understand that not every dog was bred to be a companion and thus certain dogs require more structure as is their "job" in order to be a proper functioning "companion" in society. You have a 100+ pound animal that could destroy her little dog if it's not given that obligation to listen and leave it. I have an ACD and I used to train her positive reinforcement only (I didn't want to use harsh punishments and such) I learned that my dog learned really well with +R but it did NOT prevent or stop my dog from showing agression. I ended up working with a trainer and adding corrections with prong and E-collar. My bond is much stronger, my dog is so much more affectionate and cuddly, she is much more attentive to my commands and eager to work. Corrections are not abuse, they communicate the consequences of the dogs actions. The prong and e-collar has done more good for my dog. +R (while it works for setting foundation) it made me feel terrified that my dog would have to be killed because she had some territorial agression and had turned on me a few times.

Friend of mine was screamed at because she corrected her Foxterrier verbally in a harsh voice Because the Dog decided Not to listen in this Moment, and endangered himself. Her foxterrier can run without a leash today. The Dog of The other Person still cant. The shelter where I walked dogs, mainly Pitbull Type dogs, was so afraid of people getting agitated about verbally or physical corrections, that they nearly forbade Dog Walkers to correct If people where nearby. Doesnt Stopp them to get overly rough with " unruly" dogs, and pressuring some in Defense Mode. I stopped volunteering there a Long Time ago

It's not projection-I mean it might be-but more than likely it's just a tactic that that woman feels or has learned is the most successful at belittling another person. Obviously since you're a man, an obvious line of attack would be emasculation. Men do it to other men all the time as well so it has nothing to do with her being a woman (not that you said it did).

I have a 2 yr old gsd and he is been training since 6 months and is obedient, smart, and has off leash training but with the leash on he has reactivity to dogs if he cant go up and greet other dogs. Its embarrassing and frustrating for me so I know how it feels. This dog is very well trained off leash but I can't really use it because of leash laws and my neighbors would have a fit.! I would love if he was able to not react on leash so l can feel better about him off leash! I am not saying that he is perfect but I have spent most off his life paying for training. He trained with offleash k9 . I put alot into him but training is learning and it doesnt stop it's a constant learning process that you must have to get to enjoy your dog! I think it is always good for us to follow up with training in times when we are unable to fix the issues that may come up! I think it's our duty to make sure our dogs are safe and that we keep others safe because let's face it I am a petite woman with my male gsd 89pounds and I have to be able to control my dog! I think it's just awful that you have to be criticized for trying to fix the issues but I have also had people who have gave me looks for the crazy barking that my dog does at some dogs on leash . I have tried the treats and it has not made much difference. I am with you! Thank you .......
