@@BitnerBuiltquick question: When you were talking about the spacer blocks and them possibly having imperfect measurements, if one block is slightly shorter/longer then flipping the block wouldn't change the skew. Wouldn't you actually have to switch the blocks from left to right side in order to alternate and thus not exasperate the imperfection/skew?

I've been wanting to do a French cleat system for a few of years now. Long story short, I bought a sheet of 3/4" plywood and with a circular saw and a Bora track guide, made some cleats and mounted them on my garage wall. Initially, I was very pleased. But I quickly discovered how bad a job I did with my circular saw. So I decided it's time I invest in a table saw and redo my project. In the mean time, I came across your video and it was VERY helpful. I have an old friend that lives hundreds of miles away that is also interested in French cleats but he just can't find the time to do it yet. I retired over a year ago and he's about to retire. So he's kind of depending on me to help guide him and avoid some mistakes I've already made. I've sent him many links of worthy French cleat videos but I told him that he MUST watch this one before proceeding. BTW, I've not seen anyone use the framed foam to hold your hand tools as shown at 31:34. Yeah, I'll be giving that some strong consideration that when the time comes. I've liked and subscribed and expect to spend some hours watching your other videos. Thanks.

If you cut a cleat and one cleat is wider than the other which one would you mount on the wall?
@BitnerBuilt6 ай бұрын
@@geryloftis7985 structurally it wouldn’t matter and it wouldn’t matter if it’s just one cleat going horizontally but on a single level if you have to put more than one cleat next to each other, let’s say on a 16 foot wall you would need to put 2 x 8ft pieces, you would want them to be exactly the sameso that if you have a mounted item where they meet, it’s not crooked. So in that case, I would recommend cutting the fat down to match the other.
@andrealavigne7824 Жыл бұрын
Really great video! I kind of wonder about one thing, though. I have seen in at least a couple other videos on french cleats where they trimmed off about 1/8" from the angled tip of the cleat. As those other woodworkers explained, that keeps the cleats from getting messed up/thrown off balance/something when sawdust or other debris gets into that space where the cleats join. I don't know if I explained that well, so forgive my uncertainty as to the reasoning. Anyway, any thoughts on that? Just curious. Thank you for sharing your tips & tricks. I haven't gotten to my french cleats - yet - but I will one of these days. Just one of many projects I have planned. Hope you have a wonderful day!
@BitnerBuilt Жыл бұрын
You are right many people do trim theirs, I had it on my ideas to share but never got to it. I personally don’t do it and haven’t encountered any issues but I totally understand why and agree it is nice not to have the sharp edge and allows for sawdust in the cleat to not throw you off. Thanks Andrea!

Putting a lot of though in how to mount stuff on wall’s instead of having most stuff in draws where it’s difficult at times to find needed tools. Just started looking into French cleats and this has by far been the most informative video. Thank you so much. I just started woodworking after retiring from the military and of course not enough space in the garage for the tools so French Cleats are the solution. I am trying to combine the French Cleats with the already 10y old ELFA garage Storage kit we got at the Container Store which helped keeping the garage organized at that time back in 2010 as I had very few basic hand tools (drills, bits, hammers, screws, nails, boxes, containers, etc.); however, once starting woodworking and getting my dad’s tools after he passed away, the current storage is completely overwhelmed. Again, greatly appreciated showing how much you can do w/ French Cleats. I can’t wait to start building them!🙂

For safety, could you use 2 feather boards pushing down in the board? One in front of the blade and one behind? The magnets for saws is really cool. Love the dado boxes too.

Thanks. No never put a feather board behind the blade it can cause binding and that will shoot the board back at you! You can use a fence mounted setup like the jessem stock guides to apply downward pressure on the wood. Those would be very safe.

@@BitnerBuilt I meant both featherboards mounted on the fence pointing downward. My thought was with the direction of the blade rotation, the upward pull would be greatest at the back of the blade, not in front. This is a good case for those $$$ Jessum rolling things. Your point is well taken but I know better than to push the kerf closed after the blade.

Sorry, I read your comment as putting a feather board behind the blade. 😳 Yes, you definitely could use both on the fence and that would work well. The rise is coming from the back of the blade.
