I was a mounted patrol officer in a resort city. It seems that whenever people see a horse, they feel entitled to approach and touch the horse, as if it is a friendly pet. We would politely ask that they pet them on the neck or shoulder, not the head or face. Most people would oblige, but some people would claim to be “horse owners/lovers/etc.” and ignore our request. Sometimes they got bitten, and in more egregious cases, arrested. I really don’t know how those mounted guards put up with the constant harassment from tourists.
@Londonchronicles
@Londonchronicles Жыл бұрын
Hi kennetheavey8921 good morning, thank you for sharing your experience as a mounted patrol officer. It's unfortunate that some people may not understand the boundaries when approaching and interacting with horses. As you mentioned, it's important for the safety of both the horse and the individual to approach them in a respectful manner. Mounted guards, like the King's Guards, go through extensive training to handle such situations and maintain their composure in the face of constant attention and sometimes even harassment from tourists. They are trained to handle and manage the crowds while ensuring the safety of all involved. It's a challenging task, but their dedication and professionalism shine through as they carry out their duties. Thanks for watching my video, I hope you have an excellent Thursday! 😃
@Sena121
@Sena121 8 ай бұрын
Would you be so kind to explain why to not touch the head? I learned that if you approach a horse from the side or back, it will be afraid, so you should approach from the front. Is that wrong? Also if approaching a horse, is it better to avoid eye contact or go for eye contact?
@8upwithit
@8upwithit 8 ай бұрын
@@Sena121 In our situation, the horses that we had were not always the best behaved ones, because they were usually donated by individuals who could no longer keep them for various reasons. They were trained to do certain things in a certain way, and one of the most important things that they were trained to do was to stand still. If we had to interact with a person directly, such as to affect an arrest, the person in question would be standing next to us, just in front of our leg as we were sitting on the horse. The training was for the horse to remain still, and not to move or toss his head around. We tried to discourage people from petting their face or head, because it sometimes irritated the horse. People would also pull on the cheek pieces of the bridle, which could cause the horse to pull back violently and injure themselves or bystanders. We didn’t mind if someone wanted to touch the horse, it’s just that we tried to keep the interaction as consistent as possible so as not to make the horse nervous or anxious.

P.s. As far as eye contact, as long as there’s no aggressive behavior associated with it, it’s not a problem.

@MrHorsepro
@MrHorsepro Жыл бұрын
When are people ever going to realize that when a horse pins their ears back and makes biting gestures toward them when they get too close, that is not a friendly, inviting gesture on their part? That means they do not want you around their head or touching them at all. They are trying to tell you in their own way to stay away from them. The public would be well advised to take that warning seriously because the horse can do serious harm if their signs are not heard and understood. And for God’s sake, do not bring children around those horses. You will only put them in harm’s way. I have seen horses decide to charge at people even with a rider on their back when provoked enough. The rider cannot react adequately to stop it if that is what they decide to do.

Love how the horse turns his head as if to say ‘I did that - the sign says I may bite, so I did.” The guard also seemed totally unimpressed by her histrionics. She invaded the horse’s space, ignored the warning signs (from the horse as well as the notice on the wall) so the horse took assertive action. If her play acting thought it would earn her a bit of compensation for her her terrible trauma she’s in for a disappointment. Those signs aren’t just warnings - they’re disclaimers. If they chose to ignore them it’s their look out. Besides, bringing a law suit against a horse wouldn’t have much chance of success. It’s a hard, and painful, lesson to learn - but one she won’t forget in a hurry. Horse 1 - Tourist 0 - and I’m 100% team horse. By the way - loved the little one blowing a kiss to the horse. But where were her parents? Toddlers can be as unpredictable as horses.

@@battles146 Arnie’s a star for that. He’s so patient will the little ones - but makes sure to have a nip at their parents for being so dumb. Some have no concept of the damage a horse can do if it means business. If you take the average weight of a 17hh Irish draught horse of around 800/850 kg, add the weight of the rider plus around 25-30kg for the tack, saddle and the guard’s uniform and not forgetting those iron shod hooves - v - a squishy toddler it’s not rocket science as to which would come off worse.

Thank you for your knowledgeable comment. I checked the information: When a horse's ears are forward, the horse is alert, paying attention and, or, is interested in what's in front of him~her. When a horse's ears are pinned back, close to the neck, it is angry and about to bite, or kick.' It's always good to read up on procedures, and what to expect, beforehand, when visiting places of interest, even with the public warning signs, at the location.

Love this horse!!! He is mad, personal space, that’s all he wants. Wouldn’t it be great if the horses were trained to bite people, then the tourists wouldn’t dare come close without severe consequences. I also love that the guard doesn’t care either. Well done, well done! ❤

@Sonderborg75

In some way they are being taught to do that. Whenever a tourist comes too close or grabs the reins, the guard shouts and even kicks the horse forward (rightly so!). I can only imagine how annoying/startling it must be for the horse, so a smart horse will do the chasing away itself instead. That way he can control the events. 😊 This is a clever horse!

what do you mean, the guard doesn't care, he's not allowed to do anything, the signs say it all, there's nothing he can do about it, he's on duty the tourists can read, if they decide to ignore the signs, & get toi close to the horse, they can't complain, & they 'll get no joy, if they try to sue, hope she learned the lesson, follow the rules, they're 'there for a reason, 😮Amen!

I had one horse that liked to nip, especially from behind when he was on a lead rein, got me a few times on the back and shoulders. Sometimes it would leave a nice bruise. Never any need for that overreaction thought. Perhaps she is a footballer.

I’ve had the same thing and learned to stay at least a necks reach from back legs and neck unless when grooming. Just humming, whistling softly or talking as if they understand is beneficial to animals of all types. Dad once had goldfish which, I swear, communicated with him when he talked to them.

Omg, how overly dramatic. Why was she pretending to almost fall down. 🤯 Having been brought up around horses, you learn to respect their space, or you get a nip! 😐 This horse is just over all the space invaders all that day 😂 I also love how the King’s Guard ignores her theatrics 🙄 and probably gives this beautiful horse a silent high five squeeze 🫡.
