Toyota has been experimenting with Hydrogen Fuel for a long and even though they have failed to deliver a practical hydrogen fuel cell car to the world, they are still trying their best to Push a Major Ev alternative in the net 0 carbon emission world,
However, this time around they might have the key to success in their pocket as they are trying their luck with hydrogen combustion engines instead of a fuel cell vehicle.
The headline of the article is They are alone in this race, this time around companies like Cummins, Ford, JCB, and Ashok Leyland also trying their luck in this game. Watch the full video for more.

There was a time when people thought DC is the future, they laughed at Tesla who promoted AC, but eventually AC took over the world. And now DC is taking over the grid again. I think different auto tech will coexist in the future and would be more popular where they would be more suitable. e.g EVs can't replace heavy machinery and military vehicles ever. Every technology will have their own usage.

Very glaring flaws in video : 1. Premise that no emissions occurs in hydrogen ICE except water vapour which is false, NOx emissions cannot be prevented since air is 78% N2 which is inevitably going to reach the engine and thus NOx is not prevented. It’s same gas causing smog and acid rain. It’s not me telling you this, you can watch engineering explained channel for info 2. Premise that somehow fuel cell is less efficient than hydrogen ICE : again false, ICE of any form is 20% energy efficient max, fuel cell is 50% efficient. Hydrogen production, transport and storage efficiency is same for both type. Thus in any event, since fuel cell itself is more efficient, it’s going to be better as whole too. Why it matters? Hydrogen ICE is half as efficient as fuel cell itself which is 1/3rd as efficient as EVs. For every kg of H2, you need to use 50kWh electricity. 100kWh energy takes model S 600km. For Mirai that number is 6kg H2 or 300kWh electricity For a theoretical ICE Mirai with H2, it’s 600kWh electricity to go same 600km. Not to mention since the hydrogen ICE is half as efficient, you need 2x the tank size ie 240L instead of 120L on Mirai. 3. Premise that hydrogen is lagging because of vehicle cost. Nope again false. Hydrogen is lagging because the filling stations simply aren’t there. Even if there was no public charging infra, a buyer can use EV with home charging. This is not the case with H2. Further, the limited hydrogen stations out there are so costly to fill up ($17/kg) that even if you could setup the stations, it will be very costly. For Mirai, as I said, it’s $100 per tank or ₹15/km which is very expensive even by their standards where gas is $3/gal rn On the other hand, EVs cost very little or even zero if they have solar at home. That’s too much of an ask. EVs hit the cheap to run checklist. Nobody will spend 60K on a Mirai to have zero filling stations compared to a $60K model 3 performance AWD with close to similar range (300mi/500km) and sportscar performance with no compromise on boot and interior space. It’s not like $60K is such a huge price that the rich people paying 100K for model s can’t afford. There are multiple luxury EVs much costlier than $60K which sell well.

@@shas312 exactly, for big trucks bus locomotive, definitely hydrogen is fine. But cars and bikes have no space to store hydrogen for any meaningful amount of range. On Nexon with 40L fuel tank, you can just store 2kg hydrogen. Mirai needs 6kg for 600km so 2kg is 200km at best in Nexon. Even normal Nexon EV can give 250km easily. Hydrogen would never replace fuel for road vehicles. It's literally a time bomb. The range issue of EVs can be solved by charging lanes or wireless charging lanes etc. The only real use of hydrogen would be in flights and ships where infra can not be built for charging en route. The Billions to probably trillions of dollars need for hydrogen production transportation and storage would be much higher than adding infra to support charging while driving

Efficiency does matter Assume you have 300kWh worth of renewable energy If you charge a model S directly, you can drive 1800km by charging 3 times (600km on 100kWh battery) If you make hydrogen to fill up a fuel cell Mirai then you can make 6kg hydrogen from usage of 60L of water and 300kWh of energy and drive 600km (3x less efficient than EV) If you put that same amount of hydrogen into a Mirai with the hydrogen v8, with half the efficiency (since ICE vehicle of any kind cannot be more than 30% efficient) and fuel cell itself is 50% efficient due to possibility of regenerative braking like EVs, The hydrogen ICE car can drive just 300km on 300kWh of energy. In what manner is wasting 200kWh energy worth it to drive same distance as model s in 100kWh Better use that energy to charge three EVs than one hydrogen ice car.

EVs will never be practical. Most of the car owners lack personal charging space for their cars. Public charging stations will be a mess. Just go to any fuel station in the city during peak hours. You'll have a fairly large queue. Now try this on a CNG station, the queue there will be almost 4-5 times larger than Petrol or diesel pump. Because CNG takes more time to refill than Petrol. Imagine what will happen when all cars are electric. They typically take 30-40 minutes to get a decent charge and full charging is even more slower.

Simultaneously, it will be environment friendly. Also, the battery will store a large amount current and voltage. The major advantage of this battery is it will charge fully very quickly. It hardly has charge leakage. It is estimated that average battery life will be around 25000 - 30000 years. Currently, the major issue is health hazard related to radiation. Hydrogen transportation ka dikkat hi khatam ho jaayega, agar directly electrolysis unit ko hi gaadi mein fix kar diya jaaye toh. Aur uss unit mein de-mineralised water (jiss paani mein se chemical processes se minerals ko hataa dete hain taaki wo scaling ka problem naa aaye, gaadi ke pumps aur pipelines mein. It is similar to distillation process of crude oil) ko daala jaaye. De-mineralised water ka long distance transportation mein koi dikkat nahin hai. Hydrogen based engines can be used in larger vehicles like Trucks, Buses, etc. For general cars and bikes, EV is the solution. Yes. right now, the battery manufacturing is a polluter (still not as much as petrol) but that is being rectified with better battery technology like Sodium Ion batteries, Graphene, etc. One thing is for sure, ICE is on the way out (pollution is not the only reason for this) and we need to embrace alternative technologies and make sure that the new fuel should be clean and sustainable in the long run.

ICE is on its way out only because of billions of subsidies by the government, to both EV auto manufacturers and buyers. If EV is so great, why not let the free market decide? Oh that's right it's because EV only makes sense for very rich people (people who own their homes and do short commutes to the office). It doesn't make sense for renters, it doesn't make sense for any blue collar work (long distances and towing) and it doesn't make sense for poor people (usually buying used, by which time the battery will be dead and cost $20,000 to replace).

apart from the safety every other problem can be solved very easily in India: transportation of hydrogen is nothing different from transporting cng setting up hydrogen fuel stations can be easily done by forcing petrol station to keep a minimum supply of Hydrogen, giving them tax breaks for it, they will jump and get onboarded selling vehicles reduce the tax on hydrogen vehicles will immediately make them attractive generating green hydrogen, this will take time and may not happen overnight but as the cost of solar panels and nuclear availability get better, we will see organic shift towards green energy. coming to safety standards, only time will tell how this will play out, really hoping that this tech plays out

H2 will not be transported, It will be generated through electrolysis at the filling station. Hence the transportation problem is not a problem at all. Now, lets talk about the infrastructure issue, it will be resolved with time as the demand increases since, It will only require small investment at the filling stations that are already used for filling fosil fuels. Green hydrogen production will not be a problem with over 10 upcoming nuclear plants(in India) generating green electricity which will be used for electrolysis of water to generate green hydrogen.

Problem with all the fuels that are sold through pumps in India is that government will impose maximum possible tax on these to extract maximum revenue. Today Indian people have problem with Petrol and diesel vehicles as almost half of the retail cost of petrol and diesel includes taxes from Central and State governments which makes these fuels highly expensive. Similar thing will happen to hydrogen or any other fuel which is or would be retailed through pumps. Electric vehicles stands out in this situation as the same electricity supply which is used in homes and is not taxed that much can be used to charge electric vehicles thus saving the people from government tax loot
