My first time Kayaking and this Kayak held strong. kzbin.infoUgkx4k5UrhC3v_Y4hIEaXLGvHcN5a5aBmZNB The water got pretty rough as a speed boat zipped by me, and the Kayak withstood it (I expected to be capsized). The Ores are very easy to put together, the pump worked beautifully. the seats are a bit hard to sit in after a while (I recommend sitting on the floor). after reading the reviews I was very scared it'd get a hole in it, the material is very strong and durable. The Air valve may need a small Phillips head screwdriver to adjust, other than that, it's well worth the money!(update)I've gone Kayaking in 3 Lakes and 2 rivers totaling about 40 miles. the kayak had two holes and they patched easily and no other problems can't wait for kayaking season this year!

*Why Must The Shaft Length On The Bixpy Mirage Mount Be That Long?* Some viewers think the mount should be shorter and draft less. The motor drops into the Hobie well at a slight angle. If it were any shorter then the mount wouldn't be universal for "ALL" Hobie pedal kayaks. If the shaft were shorter the top gray plug portion of the mount would hit on some Hobies and prevent the motor from fitting into the drive well. Even when i built homemade motors for Hobies I ran into this same dilemma. So the shaft length must remain the same length in order to reliably fit ALL Hobie kayaks. Hopefully this makes sense.

DONALD 2020 Main thing for “you” is getting into the shallows. Not everyone hangs in the shallows. Most of my friends use kayak to run offshore. I’m usually going out in deep water. Heck I’m even using my kayaks for scuba diving now. People can easily shorten the mount shaft if they want it running skinny. People shorten trolling motor shafts all the time and this would be even easier. I just have never found the need. However, I plan to discuss short shaft options with Bixpy since some viewers have requested it.

Wonder if a person could(with great diy skills and proper tools) cut that motor shaft off about 6”-8” where motor extends only about 1”-2” below the bottom of the kayak hull. That is my only draw back keeping me from buying one of those Bixby motors for the Hobie. I hv a great shop abs tools and excellent knowledge of wiring and different projects I’ve done, would really like to see that shaft a little closer, but do not know anyone that has bought one for their yak yet. Dude! Are you sure the excess grease has somewhere to go in that connector? Weather pack connectors like that typically don't because you want to keep the water out. So, if you use too much grease, the barrel and socket pins act like a hydraulic ram and create enough pressure to spread the socket connector wider and now you have a bad or weak connection that's just waiting to fail either intermittently or a confusing diagnosis for no connection because the wiring tests good with your meter while disconnected.

@@KayakDIY I have been a professional mechanic for almost 30 years. First cars, now forklifts. It is definitely something I have to watch out for. But yes, this is 100% a real issue and not made up hypotheticals.
@jackasschicken59222 жыл бұрын
@@KayakDIY Now that I think about it, it may be smart to not have connectors on a kayak air tight. The grease will stop corrosion due to getting wet. And if it lets the water drain out on land, then it might also completely dry out with time. But if it's air tight and a little water gets in, there would be zero chance of it getting out on its own.

I told Bixpy about my Hobie Pro Angler 14 speed results and they too were surprised, but we had two GPS speedometers running. One on fish finder and other via phone which has proven reliable. I filmed it with KPH as unit of measure because it is more accurate than MPH when using the phone app. So the Hobie PA14 with Bixpy I believe is definitely capable of higher speeds than advertised. When they come up with a short-shaft model, I'll likely get one. The major purpose of a kayak is getting into skinny water. One encounter with a submerged log with this long shaft mounted on a 300+ lb Hobie PA14 at 2-4 mph will have you $$$tranded. Also, all the batteries that you see for these applications are rated in Ah. Bixpy rates their battery as 378 Wh. The conversion is 31.5 Ah. Why not advertise in a language their customers a familiar with? Love the concept. But I'll save my $1200 for a shorter version. Would REALLY love to see one with spot-lock.

Justin I would like ur opinion on the Bixpy motor. Bixpy is releasing a sonar pod version for the Bonafide line of kayaks. Which one do u think would perform better the rudder attachment or the pod version which is more toward the middle of the boat. The pod version will still require a rudder for steering. Thanks, I really enjoy your videos and u have the best logo out there.
@KayakDIY5 жыл бұрын
Depends if you think you will go in the shallows. The pod won’t kick motor up if you hit shallows. The pod design did have a motor guard. Pod is really convenient mount design for taking on and off on days you don’t want to run motor or “anti theft”. You need a rudder no matter what for steering...or for Bixpy mounting. I liked the Bonafide pod design but I run consistently in deep enough water. You could easily pop Bixpy pod out if getting into shallow water. I will also consider paying you for Bixpy Bonafide Pod video footage if you get one. If you decide to buy “consider” supporting the channel by using this link: lddy.no/3lir

KayakDIY I just wasn’t sure if the Bixpy would perform better pushing from the stern or push/pull from the pod location. I’m also told that it will only stick out six inches from the bottom of the kayak.
@KayakDIY5 жыл бұрын
It doesn’t stick very far below. Probably only 6in below the hull. The Hobie Bixpy Mount sticks further down below the hull because it has to in order to fit in all the Hobie pedal kayaks. The Bixpy for Bonafide pod will be really shallow draft. Definitely going to make for an awesome fishing kayak setup. Makes me want to buy a Bonafide. Makes the Bonafide incredibly versatile. Bixpy can run up to 10hrs and the new Bixpy kits have 12 speeds which will be great for freshwater trolling and saltwater. They added 2 speeds on the low end for freshwater trolling anglers.

Great video guys!! I loved the loaded out Hobie. The Bixby topped it off!

I’ll keep my hobie pedals thanks. That thing sticking down so low is a liability and a hull crack waiting to happen. There’s no reason it needs to be that deep.

I will bring up the concern to Bixpy. I never found it to be an issue, but I don’t stay in skinny water much.

Would be enough for a slowly Jon boat?
@KayakDIY4 жыл бұрын
I would think so. I plan to use it in my 14ft fiberglass boat and test it. I think it is roughly 34lbs of thrust.

Very cool, but the Hobie drive needs to be tucked up next to the hull. Hanging that low is crazy.
@KayakDIY5 жыл бұрын
You aren’t alone in that concern. I will be bringing that concern up to Bixpy. Until then, any one remotely handy could shorten that shaft and make it draft a lot less. Just need a pipe tubing cutter. I did a video on shortening trolling motor shafts. This would be even easier.

How long do u batterry setup last ? I seen a great dealt drill efoil setup but his 3hr batteries only lasted half hour flat out
@KayakDIY Жыл бұрын
I get 4 hours minimum usually but as high as 7hrs running lower speeds. It could get 10hours if I stayed in lowest speed but where is the fun in that!
@chrisfloyd85125 жыл бұрын
Now you have to register it as a power boat and put all the power boat safety gear on it.

But why they make the prop shaft so long? Would be more versatile if they offered a shorter one

Please do a video on your friends Hobie PA14. I personally am interested in the mods he did to it. I'm really thinking about getting that same type of setup.

The Hobie fish finder install video I did is also on his kayak. However, I will keep that in mind and maybe do a bow to stern walkthrough of his kayak. I will likely be doing a video on his trailer setup too in near future. He also enjoys diving and spearfishing so hoping he can show me that.

Liked your hobie cassette watersnake setup better, it's a lot cheaper and doesn't hang down as much in the water,,just my thought.
@KayakDIY5 жыл бұрын
The wireless remote and lightweight battery with Aux output for fishfinder are worth the extra cost to me. I’m 24/7 on the water so the added benefits that Bixpy offers is worth it to me. I honestly am not sure how they charge as little as they do. Lithium battery, R&D, wireless remote, and paying employees isn’t cheap. For $1000 I would say it is pretty good deal. The Watersnake mod did pretty well...it just isn’t quite as efficient,fast, and convenient.

Thanks for the vid! BTW dielectric grease is an insulator and should never be applied directly onto terminals like that, only the connection body surround itself...

I agree. Would need pretty large panel though. Not sure folks would take that large of panel along on their kayaks. The Bixpy PP-166 battery has that solar charging capability but it isn’t compatible with their motor system. The Bixpy PP-166 is used just for powering other 12v and 5v accessories.

So now you have to register your kayak because you put on an electric motor?

Depending on the location you reside. Not all waters require registration.

would it not be cheaper to just buy a normal boat? these seem pointless for the money
@KayakDIY5 жыл бұрын
Yes at times it would. It isn’t for everyone. Not everyone has room for a boat and boats typically are money pits. I know...I own one. Haha.

It’s way cheaper than boats. Even little bay skiffs are a couple grand and even the motors are a grand for some of the smallest ones. I’m looking for fishing boats but gave up with the price I already got my outback..

You have a GPS overlay towards the end of the video. What GPS are you using? Curious / looking for an on water GPS myself. Thanks.
@KayakDIY4 жыл бұрын
I was using a gps app. I think called Vidometer. We had it on a hat mount. Only problem is we didn’t get the camera always pointed where it needed to be. We typically use gopros for filming not phones. Gopros have wider field of view. So the phone didn’t work well for filming, but it captured gps speed. Live and learn as they say.

I don't know how I stumbled on your video but I recognize that waterway. Very cool. I've tried starting a youtube channel reviewing local boat ramps but I don't know. Haven't put much effort into it. I'm more of a pleasure boater but I'd like to start a fishing channel. Only problem is I don't know a damn thing about fishing. LOL

Albert Villacampa Takes many hours of research online and even more actually trying to fish. I’ve been fishing for 3 years and it really only picked up for me this year. I still don’t feel like I know enough to start a channel. I jus keep teaching myself different ways to fish.

I have more videos on this mount. I’m using it on my Lightning Strike HD Kayak! I will be editing those videos soon. Just been busy with my other job as a nurse. We have a lot of COVID-19 patients in our hospital. I’ve been working overtime and networking with kayak manufacturers who are now making face shields to protect health care workers. Please have some patience at this time and I will definitely get videos out. I’m sorry....
