Talofa. Hello. We are pleased and grateful to share this 72-minute film with the world.
Two Returned Peace Corps Volunteers return to the small Pacific island country of Tuvalu 37 years after the conclusion of their service. Scott and Myra bring their now adult sons to Nukulaelae, an island of roughly 300 people, to experience the unique and beautiful culture of the place they called home for nearly 3 years. On their journey they face unpredictable travel schedules by sea and forces of nature that almost prevent them from reaching their coveted destination. Through challenges of uncertainty the family turns to their Tuvaluan friends, appreciating the beauty of the islands and catching up on a generation of missed time together. This is a story of human empathy and the value of cultural exchange, as well as a philosophical look into mankind’s relationship with nature, the prospect of climate change, and a celebration of the Peace Corps.
Directed and narrated by their youngest son, Nick, this is an attempt to tell a deeply personal story with far fewer resources than a typical documentary film. All images are from a GoPro camera, a Mavic Mini drone, old photographs from the 1980’s, and recent cell phone footage of tropical weather events.
Fakafetai. Thank you to all who participated or contributed to this video. We hope you enjoy. Alofa atu.

Hello Mr. Erickson, In 1982 my wife, son and I visited Tuvalu on our 31 foot sailboat. After Funafuti we travelled to Nukufetau, Nanumanga and Nanumea. Our visit to Nanumea was an especially wonderful experience. We spent a great deal of time with Minese, Tanu, and her young sister Afe. My son was 12 and Tanu was slightly older. We explored the lagoon with Minese. He was the "policeman" for the village. We introduced them to popcorn while they taught us much of their way of living. We ate together every evening during our visit. The village elders held a feast in the maneaba - with speeches! We were astonished to see Tanu in your video. If you still are in contact her please tell her Janet, Tom, and Robert from the Yacht Pelican remember them and highly value our memories of with her family! Thank you! (Great video too!)

I am absolutely gobsmacked at how fluent your folks are in the Tuvaluan language. 37 years and they still sound like the locals. This is amazing. The effort you have put into making this video is unreal. I did not realise I have been watching this for over an hour. Beautiful old and new photography to portray the beauty of Tuvalu with a narrative behind them that just makes it that much harder to take my eyes off the screen. Malo kae Fafetai Nick.

Wow, fakafetai lasi. That means a lot. 🙌🏼☀️🌴🥥 Yeah when I was growing up they would always use Tuvaluan to speak privately in front of us kids, so they tried to keep using it. Also, once facebook came out, I think that helped them reconnect with many Tuvaluan friends, and so they were able to brush up on their language with that. 🤙🏼

This is shocking... to see your parents, Myra & Scott. Just before I started my public service career with the Tuvalu Government, I was put to be the Peace Corps administrator in Funafuti to manage the induction of the Peace Corps team and primarily for members of the team to learn the Tuvaluan language and customs before their departure to their assigned communities in the different islands in Tuvalu. This team came to Tuvalu first half of 1980. Nice to see you Scott & Myra after 40 years. Best wishes. Mose Saitala

Watching this brought me to tears. I know what it is like to leave an island at a young age, and not being able to return for too many years. I was born on the Azores Islands, and it’s been 35 years since I’ve been back. Just like this family and many others, there are too many friends and family members that are no longer with us. This family’s experience is my experience. Congratulations on finally making it back...

It's clear this was an important journey for your family. Anyone can take a journey on land or air or sea. Your journey took you through the warmth and smiles and hearts of your now very large extended family, stretching across the vast earth. You saw and showed the real world that most people never experience. People from the Pacific Islands, Asia and Micronesia will instantly recognize much of what you showed, the culture, empathy, strong deep lifelong bonds, the touching of one another's hearts through gestures and unspoken words. It shows the interconnectedness of many many ancient cultures and nations that share deep roots going back thousands of years. Thank you for making this film, and sharing with us your priceless personal moments. It re-awoke my faith in people who know how to travel and take grand journeys *_for those they love._*

I first heard bout Tuvalu from Drew Binsky's vlog. From then on I watch videos on youtube about Tuvalu. The last one was from the vlog of Yes Theory. Since that day it always appeared on my dreams. Beautiful dreams of spending a vacation to the island. If only I am rich, I would like to travel to Tuvalu.

Hi Nick, I'm a Nauruan. So many years, and it was a very touching feeling between your parent's families and friends. I was too, moved by your clip. I have never been to Tuvalu, but I do have friends in Tuvalu today. They were in Nauru for many years as phosphate mining contractors. Most of their kids were born and raised in Nauru. They consider Nauru also as their country like Tuvalu. Cheers and God Bless your family.

Beautiful documentary... smiled all the way thru it! Being Samoan yet not being able to speak / understand fluently, I was amazed at how similar our languages are and how much I understood. So so cool that your parents were able to retain the language so well after so long. Loved hearing your dad's response to the family during the welcoming meeting in the house. Spoken like a true island guest with grace and honor. Great work here!

For starters, this is the most magnificent photography I have ever viewed. I used to feel honored to live in the United States. Now, I feel embarrassed by the selfishness and greed that surrounds me here. The native people portrayed in this video work hard for everything they have, but are filled with rewards of love and beauty all around them. Thank you for this glimpse into paradise. Thank you also to the US government in the past for creating such bridges across the oceans to unite us together. I will add into my prayers for selfishness and greed to leave my small world with hopes for a new administration.

What a wonderful tribute to your parents. Tuvalu's true beauty is in its people who carry their culture deep within their hearts and it is based on their love and care for one another, and you have captured it nicely in your film. Congratulations on making it to Nukulaelae after all the dramas, I love the part where you said "we are now in the picture that was on the wall". The speech by President JFK really summarised the whole thing nicely. Fakafetai Nick, hope you visit Tuvalu again.

I have a deep connection to this part of the world and I am moved by your family’s contribution to the development of the societal infrastructure in Tuvalu. Our lives are lived inside our memories. Most of the time they’re our own, but sometimes a story like this comes a long and takes you away on a journey that is so profound and moving that it changes something in you forever. I think you are a natural born story-teller and what your parents have given is a reflection seen in the eyes and hearts of the people they have formed deep and lifelong connections with.

Woke up this morning, thankfully, but feeling so much despair over the state of this country and its people's attitudes. I happened upon this video. The story of love, human bonding, appreciation for differences, the gratitude over "small" things. It reminded me of many things that have overshadowed the many blessings we have but overlook as we focus on material gain. Even though the despair tried to creep back in, I thought of what your video showed. I was encouraged. Thank you for sharing.

As I sit here and write this comment I have a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye. This is a most touching story, one that clearly needed telling. The joy that you folks had in seeing friends, not seen for 37 years, and the joy that these people showed when they saw you tell more than the story you have told. Clearly those people loved you and you loved them. When you went to Tuvalu you were going home not leaving it. If only this old world could be more like Tuvalu it would be a much better place, the goal set forth by JFK when he started the Peace Corps. ;-)
