I have studied this peace extensively myself, I've heard virtually all the big names playing it, and this is and (likely will remain for a very long time) my favourite rendition even though there have been performances that were technically even more accomplished. We know that Bach composed the Sonatas and Partitas at a time of grief over the death of his first wife when he had no access to an organ, which would probably have been the instrument of choice for expressing his most intimate feelings. What Trotovsek does here is what I can best describe as taking her violin and virtually turning it into an organ by making use of the acoustics of the church she is playing in. It's almost certain that others have tried the same, but I've never experienced this approach nearly as succesful as here and therefore I think that she probably captured the spirit of the Chaconne better than all other violinist I have heard. Her interpretation seems to be highly authentic in an intuitive way, or at least I feel it to be very true to Bach's intention although it's clearly not what one would call historically informed playing. Forget about that anyway, this is true heartfelt musicianship that defies such categorizations.

I mostly agree. You will probably like the rendition of Viktoria Mullova then as well. I found this one to be quite similar.

I agree. I previously never encountered her, but I found her on a spotfy playlist (by Peng) with about 90 Chaconne renditions by everyone from Heifitz to Chen, from Vengorov to Hann. Over a couple of days I listened to every one. And this was my favorite. It is like velvet stroking the heart. Such emotion.

Brahms said about this piece, something like: "If you don't have the greatest violinist with you, it is just the best thing to listen to this piece in your mind."

Even the greats play this with tension and focus on the intricacies, the repetitive astonishing variations on those four notes. They stay close to the moderate pace throughout, seldom letting us forget that it is a dance we are hearing, drama flows from the song. Lana approaches it from the other side, taking the time to dwell on the emotions, to let them stand out in full light, or in shadow. She is not just playing amazingly, she is chaneling Bach for us, her reading of the piece brings out the conflicted soul of a man whose unwavering faith cracks when his belived is taken from him. THe pain and anger at the ends of the Chacona frame the romance, the love, the joy in the d-maj center, and JS asks WHY before he returns to his faith and acceptance of his - human - condition. This reading does largely away with protocol, showing great courage and IMHO the deeper, more mature understanding of this extraordinary song. Chapeau.

This is a song I want played at my wedding and funeral. It has everything you could possibly want in a violin solo. It's so inspiring to listen to. Lana did the best job at putting soul into it. I'm glad i found somebody that plays the first 20 lines a bit slower. People like Jascha Heifetz butcher the beginning. The beginning is somber, I don't like the rush it has incorporated into it- otherwise its perfect. I want to hear those double and triple stops drawn out more. So beautiful.

"People like Jascha Heifetz butcher the beginning." That's like saying "God" is an underachiever. Stay with your day job as Ronald McDonald. Your career as a comedian has failed. You wouldn't know "soul" if you tripped over it. Heifetz as "people" ... you're a special kind of s....!

"On one stave, for a small instrument, the man writes a whole world of the deepest thoughts and most powerful feelings. If I imagined that I could have created, even conceived the piece, I am quite certain that the excess of excitement and earth-shattering experience would have driven me out of my mind." - Johannes Brahms about Bach's Chaconne

Lana - give credit where credit is due. You play evocatively, yet somehow without altering the "essential Bach" . Your interpretation is highly and uniquely personal yet somehow ego-less. At least it comes out that way to me. A remarkable achievement. Nearly every set of phrases is treated differently than the set before and following it yet with all the slight differences in tempo treatment, coupled with your defining dynamics - you achieve a rendition none of the "Greats' have previously ever produced to my limited knowledge.. Bravisissima ! Your playing has surpassed everything (at least recorded) that came before you many here are saying. Only a humility can free you to interpret "purely" how you believe and think this piece deserves to be performed so that listeners may hold close to their hearts a newer, and more intimate experience of this greatest of composers in perhaps, his most beautiful composition. You have done Bach a great honor and I am enriched because of it.

She plays it very beautiful, like I can hear her soul singing. I think why she plays it so good is because she's got an ancient spirit and it is just awesome. I think the photography adds something to this too

Unlike many other composers during the time period who were works for hire by royalty, Bach wrote for the church and drew inspiration from God. Theoretically, if you think about it drawing inspiration from God would essentially be like drawing inspiration from an infinitely deep source. I’m agnostic however after listening to this piece for over 20 years, I can honestly say that this piece has never faded in beauty or lost its depth, quite the opposite is true. This may be the only evidence I have for the existence of God in my life and Lana’s interpretation of this piece exemplifies that.

The Bach Chaconne will be played until the end of time. The themes of suffering, pain, and grief are uniquely the human experience, as well as the ability to birth such beauty from the ashes of suffering. Thank you for sharing your soul in this piece -it is beautiful. Your emotion and feeling is born of unique and formative experiences. Thank you for playing them for us.

There is just something so remarkable about her playing. The utter bandwidth of her tone is unlike anything I've ever heard from a violin. It's like a river flowing and yet look at her face, there is no stress nor striving to be anything other than inside the music. Eyes closed she has no need to watch her hands for in her dreaming she flies at will, her thoughts immediately become an otherworldly reality. Clearly, she is both a violinist and a storyteller. I look forward to hearing more and more of these fantastic reveries...

Thank you Lana. Your great talent and authenticity is more powerful then the emotions of this piece. Personally, that's what I love to hear the most on this piece, when it trancends from pain and sorrow, to glory and resistance, purhaps that was Bach's purpose. It's very difficult to control that balance and not to carry away, but not for you, You are at much higher levels. Love to hear Arthur Grumiaux also, God Bless You Lana, and am waiting for more.

¡Me encantaría conocer tu opinión!

Interesante.
