One of my favorite boss fights of all time is Asgore Dreemurr from undertale. I love everything from his cool design and character, the music that plays during it, and especially the story and dialogue. Asgore truly does not want to fight you, and he does not want to win the fight. Him destroying your mercy button is the most impressive example i've seen where the game uses something related to its gameplay in order to add to the narrative of the game. He removes the mercy button as he does not believe he deserves mercy, which i find incredibly compelling. He could have easily destroyed the fight button in order to not die but he did the opposite. A truly amazing boss fight which is not talked about nearly enough
@nananderson7259
@nananderson7259 2 ай бұрын
I was literally coming here to say that. The best part to me, is that you can definitely infer who Asgore is to Toriel at this point (there's been hints) but not only does Asgore's theme immediately connect him to her, it tells you instantly what kind of ox-man, king he is. In his mind, he's protecting what he loves - his people and his home; even if it's breaking his heart to do it. Just like his formerwife did before you convinced her to let you pass (or..before you did something unspeakable).
@_just_demi_5528
@_just_demi_5528 Ай бұрын
And you can even see his protecting/reminiscing parts by a cool gameplay aspect. If you save the pie that Toriel gives you all the way in the beginning of the game and only eat it when facing him, he'll have less damage on his attacks. There are two other things that I cannot remember off the top of my head, but he says something like "Oh...I remember that..." right when you eat it. It's sad, and it's a nod to their relationship-or, more important, lack thereof.

Gabriel from Ultrakill in both acts has always stuck with me just the fact that he starts as this honourable angel warrior who becomes enraged at your victory over him, only for him to realize that you're the only thing that's really challenged him, which causes him to love fighting you, and i cannot wait to see what happens in act 3

Demon King Ganondorf is hands-down the best final boss in Zelda, and also one of the best bosses in any game I've played. Demon Dragon is basically just Dark Beast Ganon if it was good, because while both are heavily cinematic and basically impossible to lose, fighting a giant dragon while riding a smaller dragon in the skies above Hyrule is significantly cooler than shooting a giant pig with a bow in Hyrule Field. Also, I was severely underequipped going into the fight, thereby turning it into feeling like a Soulsborne boss instead of a Zelda boss.

This is genuinely my favourite bizly video, you could tell that there was so much love and effort put into it. It's actually so enjoyable and each cameo (I love the inclusion of other CCs to explain the different factors that make a boss fight good using their own gaming anecdotes btw) made me smile just as much as the last! I was trying to sleep to this video but I honestly kept picking it up to watch the screen every 5 minutes because I could just tell that whatever was on screen was something I had to see. And the editing didn't disappoint!!! I'm so sleep deprived that I don't have the vocabulary to describe how good it is but make no mistake - this is actually the best bizly video I've seen and it deserves way more views than it already has

I'm not gonna lie, the final boss fight in DMC3 always hits me so hard. I grew up with the franchise so i do adore it but the fact that you're chasing your brother through this entire tower, his pursuit for power and your will to save humanity, both of you teaming up together only to be hit with the fact you have to fight each other in the end with the most beautiful rendidtion of the main theme. Bro brings me to tears, and the fact that Dante in the end still wants to save him... RAAAAAAAAHHHHH

The thing he described with killing the Abyss Watchers is the EXACT thing that happened to me, I think Dark Souls 3 is my favorite game ever, and I think it’s very close to what a perfect game could be. Especially the final boss, the feeling you get when you hear that “plin plin plon” in his 2nd phase is UNMATCHED. Literally every time I hear it the memories from the entire series come flooding back, and when you realize that this boss is the culmination of all the people who have linked the fire, including you, it HITS. I don’t think anything will ever match that…

King Minos from Ultrakill. Not only a fun and challenging boss fight, but a boss fight with great lore and backstory that the game gives you if you find even before ever fighting him. And in life, Minos was a generous king who was a good person. But the people he fought for are dead. And now he wants revenge on the things that destroyed humanity. (It makes more sense if you play Ultrakill)

The boss fight that left the longest impression on me has to either be the mantis lords/sisters of battle or the radiance from hollow knight. For the mantis lords, they are one of the only bosses in the game that gives you a “challenge” option and they are the only boss where you are warned how difficult it’s going to be, with an npc recommending that you get a weapon upgrade. For the radiance, the fact that you need to do a checklist of stuff never specified to be able to fight a secret boss that you can’t even fight in the boss rush mode until you’ve 112% the game let such an incredible impact

Hollow knight has so many great bosses though with fights like grey prince zote, nkg, or radiance all offering wildly different types of challenge as well

Simone from NieR:Automata is probably my all time favorite boss fight. The build up, the horrifying imagery, the arena, the lore implications: all of this comes together to craft this masterpiece of a battle. It’s also one of the first moments in the game that introduces the game’s themes of humanity and existentialism in such a compelling way. And the cherry on top of this sundae of perfection, is the soundtrack. This fight has one of the greatest soundtracks in gaming history. It’s so tragic in its messaging, but so grand and epic in its delivery. The Simone fight is utterly flawless.

The final boss of ori and the will of the wisps is my favorite boss I’ve fought. She’s a 100 foot owl that hatched deformed with dead parents. And was pushed away from the rest of her species because of her monstrous appearance. She grew up alone fending for herself and ended up being bitter and cruel. The fight is hard but fair, and combines the two core elements of the game being the smooth platforming and snappy combat in the final boss to make it really feel like a test of all your skills. You fight her on the ground in the first phase, then there’s a chase sequence in the middle to test your platforming, and the last phase she bit by bit destroys the entire arena, leaving you to do the last third of the boss fight entirely in the air. By this time in the game you’ve accumulated a wide variety of movement abilities that you need to utilize constantly to quickly maneuver around the bosses barrage of attacks while dealing your own. And if you make a single mistake you fall to your death. When you finally kill her she uses the last of her strength to fly back to the dried out remains of her parents and dies crying under their wings. The music for the entire sequence is also great, oris theme slowly works it’s way into the music as you’re getting close to finishing the fight, it overpowers the bosses theme as you overpower the boss. This comment is already really long and I couldn’t even begin to cover all the nuisances and story connections that the game subtly builds up for this boss. I highly recommend the game to anyone who hasn’t played it. (But not really the first game, just the sequel. The first has a terrible save system and feels lifeless by comparison)

Awesome video, I especially related to the music section seeing how I have been greatly impacted by the mood and feel a certain song can give off at the right moment This is not a “boss fight” but I resonated more to the ending of RDR where you work for your freedom and then in the end have it all be taken away from those you worked for, betrayed, then later have someone impacted by it take revenge. It really left an impression to me and brings me to tears when I reach that end and the final dual that comes to it.

Fatalis from Monster Hunter: World has to be one of my favorite boss fights of all time, and after watching this video I feel like he hits just about all of the elements mentioned. There isn’t really all _too_ much in terms of dialogue, but the overall lack of dialogue in and of itself showcases the gravity of the situation. In terms of narrative, you are fighting a dragon who is spoken about like a legend, a nightmare, a _god_ - something much greater than anything you’ve faced this far. He has incinerated an entire kingdom with ease and now it’s up to you to stop him before he decides to wreak havoc again. *Countless* lives are riding on your victory, in a fight that calls upon just about everything you’ve been through up until this point, the culmination of your journey. Fatalis pulls out plenty of surprises throughout the fight, unleashing new devastating moves with every phase. The fight is _very_ challenging since you’re fighting to kill him within the time limit while you’re just trying to survive _and_ you’re fighting to break his horns before phase 3 so he doesn’t get even _stronger_ than before, but I rarely felt that the fight was difficult in a way that was unfair. The battle tests your skills and your gear in a fair but devastating way. In terms of stage, you fight him in the scorched ruins of a castle in a kingdom he burnt to the ground, showcasing his immense power and the potential stakes of the battle. But the stage isn’t only cool, it’s crucial to the fight. Littered around the stage are ballistae and cannons, siege weapons with limited ammo that you can use to damage Fatalis and knock him down or bind him for a brief time with special ballista ammo you only get _two_ of. There are destroyed pillars scattered across the area that can be used to block some of his devastating fire attacks, there are various ledges that you can jump off of to mount him to perform your aerial attacks. Between each phase he unleashes a massive blast of flame that you can only survive by hiding behind specific objects, and when you finally unlock the dragonator, a limited use pair of massive drills that deal massive damage to Fatalis, you don’t get to aim them, you have to get Fatalis to move into their path. As a whole, you’re required to take control of the stage in order to beat Fatalis, taking note of your cover, your resources, and the positioning of both you _and_ Fatalis, making the stage a vital part of the fight. Although you’ve fought much larger monsters before, the _true_ scale of Fatalis lies not in his size (though he is pretty damn big), but in the scale of his power. Fatalis’s massive fire attacks as he moves between his phases engulf the entire stage and _beyond_, tearing apart wood and stone and turning the very steel you hide behind red hot as it melts before your very eyes. Those watching a distance away from the camp can see Fatalis’s flames devouring the entire area as he floats in the air without even flying, held aloft by the sheer power of his flame. In terms of design, Fatalis is one of the most dragon-looking dragons in all of monster hunter, but the solid simplicity of his design also shows that there is no silly gimmick, and this is a _grave_ battle. His appearance and his movements do well to show Fatalis’s malice, since he isn’t just some beast: Fatalis is intelligent, and he *hates* humanity, so much so that he melts the armor of fallen hunters onto his chest in mockery of their own hunting, something that he _actually does_ once he reaches his third phase and his chest glows red-hot with flame. And the music… Fatalis’s introduction and his first phase evoke a feeling of pure terror, choirs calling out in horror at the hellish power of Fatalis, the destruction he has caused, and the many lives he has ended. At first, the battle is given a tone of terror and almost hopelessness - if Fatalis is so powerful, so _horrifying_ how can you possibly face him and live, much less defeat him? But once you reach the 2nd phase, the music shifts. Though the music still evokes the horrifying hatred and power of Fatalis, the music also begins to grow heroic, egging you on and calling upon the memories of your journey with leitmotifs from the game as well as previous Monster Hunter titles. The stakes have not really changed. You’re still fighting Fatalis, but you’re not just some bothersome insect for him to burn to ash anymore. He’s taking you seriously now. He is hurting. You aren’t just annoying Fatalis anymore - this is a battle. His 3rd phase continues with the same music… until you use the dragonator. When you release that dragonator and score that devastating hit on Fatalis, badly wounding him and knocking him down, the music cuts out, and new song starts playing. The main theme. Not the main theme of Monster Hunter: World, or the main theme of the Iceborne expansion. But the main theme Of the very First Monster Hunter. The track rises and begins blasting heroically, egging on your victory and calling for you to give everything you’ve got to finish the fight and defeat the black dragon of nightmare. At this point in the fight, you might not have many chances left, you might be running out of time or resources, but the music tells you that now is not the moment to stop. You can defeat Fatalis. You can win. Now is your time - go be a hero. And when you finally beat him, and that special rendition of the quest complete _finally_ announces your victory… My God. What an amazing fucking boss.

for me, the boss that makes me feel, is ds3's lord of cinder. its not the hardest fight, and its not the fan favorite of many, but when the 1st phase music fades into gwyns meloncoly theme, it reminds me of the struggle. the pain of the first trys, the determination of getting though the challenges, and the feeling of accomplishment. I will forever remember this boss.

The song that plays during the “Yhorm the Giant” bossfight gave me chills whenever i figured out his story, his anger, his grief… the song amplified during his second phase, and he started fighting more savagely… an underwhelming boss fight made good solely due to the music and story…

One of my favorite bosses narratively has to be Von Karma from the first Ace Attorney. I know it’s not like a traditional fighting boss type game, but it gets me invested every time and that ending is so good because of how well it ties it all together and how rewarding it is to defeat him.

I really enjoyed the Darth Vader fight from Jedi: Fallen Order. The whole concept of you simply not being able to defeat him was amazing. It just made the whole game seem so much more meaningful, as you realize that, no matter how powerful you got, you weren't even close to winning.

I really feel like you can see the care in this video, and through this, it helps me understand why i like some bosses so much, and i feel like i can see a lot of these elements in the trickster, between the story elements behind the lost friend, the music choices, and the surprise you get every time he does what he wants, plus the insane design behind the trickster and how it shows he has a split mind.

The mixture of physical (almost slapstick??) comedy and traditional comedy within Bizlys videos are definitely what keep drawing me back. I adore video essays, but the additional editing and time put into these videos are what make me excited for his uploads- i love storytelling in video essays, and even though their jokes done through editing, the storytelling element is always there to aid his point (ie the edited scenes in puppet history). I can see he’s definitely embracing that side of his content creation more and I think it’s only going to get better- Keep it up, bizly! (Eating mud)

Like, you didn't have to make a little beebo sprite for the Undertale section but you did and that shows just how much care and thought was put into the presentation of this topic. I love the green screen as well. This is your best video so far, i'm so excited to see more work from you dude!!! Also, PLEASE YES i'd love a video about the music in Undertale, beautiful soundtrack. Probably my favorite boss fight in all of gaming is Ameno-Sagiri from Persona 4. He is such a unique take on the “you fight god” final boss troupe in JRPGs, and he’s the perfect culmination of everything up to that point. He is essentially a being that exists to represent and act upon the collective desire of humanity, and he claims that humanity desires the fog that hides the truth and keeps them comfortably ignorant, and through the power of the connections the player has made throughout the game, you effectively beat him by changing his mind about what humanity desires with your own sheer will and the will of your friends. And you desire truth. Freakin’ genius writing, it’s stuck with me to this day

I’d say for me the boss that covers all of the criteria that Bizly has talked about for what makes a great boss fight, would be Gael from Dark Souls 3 in the Ringed city DLC. Where to start? Well, the boss was a surprise since Gael put us on the journey of burning the painting in Ariendel, to guiding us through the ringed city. The dialogue just makes feel both baffled and sad for when he states “for my lady’s painting”. The music slaps with it starting out with this slow somber chorus and dramatic intrumentals then the music goes crazy when he goes into his phase 2 and even more so in phase 3. His design is memorable of a wild dog eating anything and everything that it can, before getting up on 2 legs to fight you hollow to man. The setting is so gorgeous and tragic, and if you know the context of this fight prior and after. You find out that Gael has been around since the beginning, since the first wars against the dragons! And when faced with the furtive pigmy’s that he ate them because their blood has dried up, and he fully knew that he would loose his mind in the process! And having that small glimmer of hope that you might still be out there unkindled ash, who can handle the power of the dark soul, to give to the little girl who is painting the new world which can be named after you or Ash. Overall Dark Souls 3 has the best boss I have ever faced in my entire time on this earth playing video games!

Mixed feelings on leitmotiffs. Best example of why is in NieR replicant vs NieR:Automata's music. Replicant recycles a lot of its own motifs and does so very often. Automata uses some of replicants motifs but overall doesn't really repeat hardly any tracks within itself. I think leitmotiffs like song of the ancients work, but not ones like yonah or dispossesion which play too many times and add too little. It leaves me wanting for more new music. Wishing the music and moments where these songs play stood out more. They start to blend together and become boring and dull. Less memorable and interesting. Moments like fighting devola and popola are made stronger because of the leitmotiffs, but that's 1 moment in the game. There's much more time spent with other motifs like yonah and dispossesion and the game suffers for it. It ends up feeling lazy to me rather than smart or creative. It also means that other songs have to be reused more themselves like deep crimson foe or dark colossus destroys all. Those both get reused for action sequences and you can argue its because songs like yonah took up too many spots to allow for more unique action music. I almost always would prefer a music setup like Automata over replicant since it feels more unique, distinguished amongst itself, has more variety/quality and it doesn't get as boring since there's simply more unique pieces to listen to.
@Apothecartea
@Apothecartea Жыл бұрын
@@trevorveillette8415 No I totally get it, I once listened to like a 40 song game soundtrack that for the most part, recycled the same motif in every song, which obviously gets repetitive after a while lol. I like to think of motifs like highlighting sentences on a paper; if you highlight every sentence, it becomes so convoluted you’ve essentially highlighted nothing. Too much isn’t great. Better examples I honestly can’t think of off the top of my head atm approach letimotifs in a different way. Attaching a motif to a character, and then only introducing the motif to expand on it as the character goes through change as well, like changing keys, keeping the shape of the sequence but changing notes, etc. is a lot more fun to pick apart than having the same, static theme play when a character is just chilling on screen. I don’t want the music to point at the character on screen and go, “There! They’re right there! Do you SEE them!?” But instead give a nod to point you in the right direction thematically. I also like when a letimotif attached to one character is played alongside another character to connect their themes.

The absolute best case of “THERES A SECOND PHASE???” Belongs to Hades It’s a rogue like where you escape hell, and the final boss is Hades himself (who’s your dad), the first time I actually reached him (you have to restart after every death) I absolutely wrecked him…and then he stood up Yeah it took me another 7 attempts before I beat him, the best part? There’s a challenge box you unlock after beating him for the first time with lots of stuff, one of them changes every single boss fight throughout the game so they’re ALL way harder…Hades gets a phase 3
