I used to HATE Volta, but now I get it and I LOVE it. She lived on a boat for some time, that’s why “Earth Intruders” ends with that ship horns section. And Wanderlust starts with “I am leaving this harbour”. That’s clever and hilarious. Honestly, the fact that she wants us to listen to 2 minutes straight of ship horns makes me laugh A LOT. Volta and Utopia need to be listened a thousand times, and need context explanation. Love your reactions btw. ❤️‍🔥

My copy of this album has different cover art. It features Björk with her face painted blue, yellow and red, wearing a colorful crochet outfit and there's fire forming the word Volta and her name.

My favorites tracks are: Earth Intruders, Wanderlust, Innocence, I See Who You Are, Vertebrae by Vertebrae, Hope, & Declare Independence. The video for Wanderlust is one of my favorites from Bjork.

It’s so wild to me how the songs are a bit more palatable in places, and drab on others. But when it’s picked apart at random, there are some really great tracks in there! Vertebrae by Vertebrae, although simplistic in structure, is VERY dynamic as it grows. Which then paints this picture of a beast grasping to the surface and then finally emerging with rage. I understand the reason why this albums structure is all over the place is because of her trying to portray her travels as a sampler platter for each place she visited. Even with this understanding, I feel ‘Post’ handled that concept more gracefully. Still love it for what it is; but my least favorite structures album in her catalog (as well as its album art).

I fully agree with this comment. If I remember correctly the image of Bjork on the cover was a sticker. Maybe I still have it somewhere lol. She kind of lost me with this one until Fossora. And btw Anohni is a woman :)

Finally a follow up from you, nice. Volta is a nice return to a more digestible sound, although I feel it is her more inconsistent album (usually her albums have a kind of theme, storyline and overall identity I feel) Volta itself feels like a search for purpose like wanderlust says, musically it has some bangers, so well textured and varied, her contributions with anohni sound gorgeous

I think volta really shines as a live experience, the energy she was trying to convey gets lost in the intimate setting of an album. Also the interlude between earth intruders and wanderlust should have been it's own track imo, in some versions of the album it's at the beginning of Wanderlust so you have to go through it before you can listen to the song 💀

There are interesting ideas in Volta, but unusually for Björk they never really seem to gel together as a cohesive whole. As individual songs two or three are all timers, but years later it's hard to remember they appeared on the same album together. Which is fine! But usually Björk's albums hang together as a single piece. I almost feel like the album was released prematurely before she fully finished cooking it.

I wholly agree. "I See Who You Are", "Innocence", "Vertebrae by Vertebrae" are great, good and OK standalone songs with wonderful ideas, but are ultimately forgot in the Bjork sphere. I guess no one can win them all, right?

You should listen to her podcasts she made about each album, she explains every album concept and almost every song, I can see why people don't get her lyrics or her beats but it's not because it doesnt have sense, in this particular album the lyrics are her way to express thoughts about news (in Hope about that pregnant woman), films (in Pneumonia, inspired by Del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth), political issues, activism (Declare Independence... Also about been a Wanderlust and travel the world in a ship (that explains the ambient sounds and World music influences) It's not my favorite album by her but certainly one of the most conceptual. (Even tho people say it doesnt have a concept at all)

Wanderlust is probably the best track on the album, for the majority of people at least (usually in the polls) i think you missed it completely, i hope you can connect with later, also the outro of Earth Intruders is actually Wanderlust intro rather. Also the aspect of mixing beats and an instrument element is present in EVERY bjork album.. And dont judge Dull Flame so quickly ! The song is a long slow progression

This album was my introduction to Björk. I remember being a kid watching the Wanderlust music video on MTV Brazil. Because of that it's really special to me. Definitely not her top 3 best but I really like it. I think the tour she did for Volta was her best. I wish I had gone to her concert back then. I saw her live this year here in Brazil though, finally.

On my first listen I was the same for the majority but Dull Flame was an instant obsession and since then all the slower atmospheric songs have been my go to. This album is so incredible as Bjork typically writes to her mood and situations and at the time this allllllllllllll made sense. Her divorce, bad press after Goldie and the stalker, falling in love again and feeling like it was a shattered industrial version of a rebound. It was all about asking questions and being fragmented and trying to get music back after medulla. Finding music in the industrial sounds around her- as explored in Dancer In The Dark. It’s such a wonderful thematic that the album is right up here with vespertine. I see who you are. To the mirror. Wow

This was her last album when i started listen to Bjork. I used to dont like Anohni's voice on Dull Flame of Desire, my thoughts were similar to yours. But the cadence, slowly progression through the trumpets suited it for me. Love that song quickly after the first impression. I used to "had" a version where the horns harbour section was at the start of wanderlust (as it is on the music video of that song) so it plus the next track made a 15 minutes trumpet section that was what i most listened to from this album. To this day, Innocense is the only track that i still can't enjoy. Really curious what you would thought after this on the next three ones, cause they are more on this "disjointed" side, specially the Arca ones. I started with some splitted songs from each album, but not cronologically, including this one, so im more "used to" it, and instantly loved Biophilia, Vulnicura and Utopia, her less fan favorite ones, buy I still cant fully enjoy Debut or even Post. Glad im watching this after you completed this series, so my answers are on a click of distance😅

There is something mysterious about this, I mean that every time it comes to this particular album, many people suddenly become masters of musical composition/production and proceed to list everything that doesn't work according to them. As for me, I admittedly had a hard time getting into this album when I first discovered Björk, took me a few years before it grew on me. So, I can understand someone who doesn't like this. But never did I judge the production, or the lyrics, or the composition. We are talking about music, not about an essay due next monday at school.

I really enjoy your opinion about Volta, not my favorite album but I listen to when I feel tired or bored, it’s kind of fresh sounds! Not always have to be a perfect fan, we are able to not liking something about our favorite artist. I think Björk changed all her concepts since Medúlla, because in the description of that album she said that Medúlla is a new start, actually you can figure it out, Debut, Post, Homogenic and Vespertine have more cohesive lyrics and structures and Medúlla is totally different! Biophilia is one of my favorite albums and it’s very experimental. I’m pretty sure you will love it, and love Vulnicura and Utopia. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

I’m a big Björk fan since she released Debut but I have never been able to listen this one out. But Hyperballad live at Paris from the Volta tour is one of my favourite Björk performances. Volta in Latin means ‘turn around’ or ‘a turn’.

I feel like Volta is the pivot point between early Björk and her later albums. It's a very mixed bag of songs and sounds, some like it and some would like to forget about it.

Of all her Projects this one is the one that gave me & still gives me a hard time to fully digest. It has its beautiful moments and Lyrics that grab u but overall , Volta is prob at the bottom of my list. Fun fact, The Dull Flame of Desire is actually a Russian Poem from the 17th(???) Century that she put to music.

I’d love to know us our opinions of her soundtrack album she did before Volta, called Drawing Restraint 9. The song “Hunter Vessel” from DR9 was later sampled on Volta on the tracks "Vertebræ by Vertebræ" and "Declare Independence". A lot of people don’t consider it a proper album but since you reviewed Selmasongs maybe you’ll give this one a chance too haha ! 😇

I love this album specially cuz that was when I was in high school and 16 yo. I had heard Its Oh So Quiet and All Is Full of Love but then I heard Declare Independence and ever since I have gotten so much into her music and collabs and earlier bands namely The Sugarcubes my fav of her early bands. I really love all the horns!! And that transition from Dull Flame into Innocence I love that.

From the internet : Speaking about the album's title in 2007, Björk said that she is “always looking for words that have some sort of energy” and found that 'volta' was “both the name of a scientist in Italy who invented the battery, and also a river in Africa which had been built by men, and a lagoon built by men called Lake Volta

If Volta were by any other artist, it would be intriguing and make me wonder what else they could do. For Björk, it's definitely the worst but not irredeemable since Wanderlust, Vertebrae by Vertebrae, and Declare Independence are great, and Earth Intruders is pretty good. I recommend live versions of Wanderlust and the video.

When I first listened to this album I disliked it, so I’m sure it will grow on you. Especially Wanderlust. It used to be my third least favorite and now it’s my favorite. Very surprised you didn’t care for Innocence, either. That track grew on me. I still dislike the minimalist “Pneumonia”, and the bizzare “My Juvenile”. “Vertebrae by Vertebrae” is just ok. I love Bjork, but while "Volta'' has some decent moments individually, as an album, it stinks. I'm glad to see you hate it, too 😂. It was a misguided attempt that turned out a collection of songs with no direction, be it sonically or lyrically. Now that this TERRIBLE album and album cover are behind us, let's move on to "Biophilia", please, my favourite Bjork album. Also "I See Who You Are" ought to be rereleased among a worthier collection of songs, cuz "Volta''" deserves your score. I love you Bjork, but I calls 'em as I sees 'em, and no onr can win 'em all, right? 😂 Thanks for your honest, respectful review.
